Overview

The Macro Mushroom (Agaricus urinascens, long known in field guides as Agaricus macrosporus) is among the heaviest and most imposing members of its genus in temperate grassland. A mature specimen can weigh more than a kilogram, with a domed white cap the size of a dinner plate carried on a short, barrel-shaped stipe. The scientific epithet macrosporus referred to its exceptionally large spores, which are noticeably bigger than those of the common Field Mushroom and are one of the microscopic anchors of the species.

It sits in Agaricus section Arvenses, the group of pale, almond-scented meadow mushrooms that also contains the Horse Mushroom. Members of this section share free gills that pass from pale greyish-pink through pink to deep chocolate brown, a substantial double ring, and a dark brown spore deposit. What sets the Macro Mushroom apart within that company is sheer bulk combined with a cap surface that ages into a mosaic of coarse, flattened scales rather than staying smooth and silky.

Because it fruits mainly in old, unimproved grassland that has escaped heavy fertilising and ploughing, the species has become a useful indicator of well-preserved meadow and downland habitat in parts of Europe. Where the soil biology has been disturbed it tends to disappear, so its rings and scattered troops are increasingly confined to churchyards, ancient pasture, and grazed chalk slopes.

How to identify it

Cap

Enormous for the genus: typically 10–25 cm across and occasionally larger. It begins as a tight, almost spherical white button, expands through a low dome, and finally flattens. The surface is dry and matt, whitish to cream, ageing to dull ochre or buff, and characteristically breaks up into broad flattened scales or a coarse cracked patchwork, especially toward the centre in dry weather. The margin often carries hanging fragments of the veil.

Gills

Free from the stipe and crowded, narrow, and very numerous. They start pale greyish-white — never bright pink in the button stage, which is a useful genus-level distinction from the true Field Mushroom — then pass through dull pink and finally to a deep chocolate to blackish brown as the spores mature.

Stipe

Short relative to the cap, thick and solid, often 3–5 cm wide, cylindrical or tapering downwards to a somewhat pointed base. It is white, smooth above the ring and slightly fibrous or scurfy below. The ring is large, thick and pendulous, with a felty, sometimes cogwheel-patterned underside that can break into patches.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is very thick and firm, white, discolouring slowly to a dull pinkish or ochre-brown where cut, particularly in the stipe base; it does not flash bright yellow. The odour is pleasant and faintly of almonds when fresh, becoming sharp and ammoniacal in old or wet specimens — the trait behind the name urinascens. The spore print is dark chocolate brown, and the spores are conspicuously large under the microscope.

Where and when it grows

A grassland species, found in permanent pasture, hay meadows, downland turf, large lawns, churchyards, and grassy dune slacks. It shows a marked preference for calcareous or neutral soils and for sites that have not been ploughed or heavily fertilised, which is why it is often listed alongside waxcaps as an indicator of long-established grassland. It fruits singly, in scattered troops, or in slowly expanding arcs and fairy rings.

The main season runs from midsummer through autumn, with fruiting triggered by heavy rain after warm weather. It is widespread across Europe, extending into North Africa and temperate Asia, and similar large white meadow species occur in North America. Fruit bodies push up through dense turf and can lift a visible plug of soil and grass with them.

Ecological role

Agaricus urinascens is a saprotroph, feeding on dead organic matter in the upper soil and thatch layer of grassland rather than forming any partnership with plant roots. Its mycelium spreads radially through the humus, breaking down accumulated grass litter, root fragments, and dung-enriched organic material and releasing nitrogen and phosphorus back into the turf. The darker, more vigorous grass often seen just inside a fruiting arc is a direct result of that nutrient release.

Because the mycelium grows outward as a slowly widening front, colonies are long-lived and effectively perennial, with the same ring reappearing in the same field year after year. This makes the species sensitive to disturbance: ploughing, reseeding, and heavy fertiliser inputs fragment the mycelial mat and it recovers slowly, if at all.

Similar species

The Horse Mushroom (Agaricus arvensis) shares the almond scent and dark brown spores but is smaller, has a silky-smooth cap that does not crack into coarse scales, bruises distinctly yellow on the cap surface and stipe base, and has a thinner ring with a neat cogwheel pattern. The Field Mushroom (Agaricus campestris) is much smaller and more slender, has bright rose-pink young gills, a simple thin ring that often vanishes, and lacks any almond odour.

Large white Amanita species can look superficially similar at a distance, but they always have white gills that never turn brown, a white spore print, and a sac-like volva or bulb at the stipe base — features entirely absent in Agaricus, where the base is simply tapered and there is no cup. The Yellow Stainer (Agaricus xanthodermus) is separated by the vivid chrome-yellow that flashes in the cut stipe base within seconds and by its inky, phenolic smell rather than almonds.
