A stout, sulphur-yellow-gilled Tricholoma with a greasy olive-yellow cap that is usually half-buried in sand under pines. Its notched bright yellow gills and ringless pale stem are the key characters.
Overview
Man on Horseback is one of the classic yellow members of Tricholoma, a large ectomycorrhizal genus in the family Tricholomataceae. The genus is recognisable by fleshy, medium to large fruiting bodies, white spore prints, gills that are sinuate or notched at the stem, and the complete absence of a ring or volva. Within it, T. equestre belongs to a section of yellow-gilled, sticky-capped species associated with conifers.
The name has had a tangled history. European authors long used Tricholoma flavovirens for the same fungus, and the yellow Tricholoma of sandy pine woods appears in the literature under both names. Recent work also suggests the concept covers more than one closely related species across Europe and North America, separated by host tree, cap colour balance and spore details, with populations of pine dunes differing from those of spruce forests.
It is a fungus of a very particular landscape: open, sandy, nutrient-poor pine woodland and coastal dune forest. Fruiting bodies often push up through loose sand so that only the top of the cap shows, encrusted with grains, and a gentle excavation is needed to reveal a surprisingly long, stout stem below. That habit, together with the intense sulphur-yellow gills, makes it one of the more memorable autumn fungi of sandy pinelands.
How to identify it
Cap
5-12 cm across, occasionally larger, convex with an inrolled margin at first, then broadly convex to flat and often slightly irregular. The surface is greenish-yellow, olive-yellow to golden, typically darker and browner over the centre where fine reddish-brown appressed fibrils or small scales may develop, and paler lemon toward the rim. It is viscid to sticky when moist and shiny when dry, so sand grains, needles and litter adhere heavily to the cap of specimens emerging through dunes.
Gills
Sinuate, notched where they meet the stem, crowded, moderately broad, and a striking bright sulphur to lemon yellow that persists into maturity. They do not develop pink or brown tones, though they may become slightly dingier with age.
Stipe
5-10 cm tall and 1.5-3 cm thick, stout, solid, cylindrical or slightly thickened downward, pale yellow to whitish-yellow and often faintly fibrillose. There is no ring and no volva. In dune populations the stem may be very long and mostly buried in sand, with the visible portion little more than a stub.
Flesh & spore print
Flesh is thick, firm and white to pale yellow, particularly yellow just under the cap cuticle and in the stem cortex, and does not change colour where cut. The odour is faint and farinaceous, recalling fresh meal or cucumber. The spore print is white and the spores are small, smooth and ellipsoid.
Where and when it grows
This species is closely tied to pine on sandy, acidic, nutrient-poor soils. Its heartland is coastal dune pine forest and inland sandy pinewood, where it fruits beneath Scots pine, maritime pine, lodgepole and jack pine, and it also occurs with spruce in northern boreal forest. It favours open stands with thin ground vegetation of mosses, lichens and heather, and is often found alongside other sand-loving genera such as Suillus, Rhizopogon and Chroogomphus.
Fruiting runs from early autumn into early winter, later than most woodland fungi, and can continue until the first hard frosts; in mild coastal climates it may fruit into December. It is widespread across northern and central Europe, especially along the Baltic and Atlantic dune systems, and occurs across boreal Asia and in parts of North America, particularly in sandy pine barrens and coastal pine forest.
Ecological role
Tricholoma equestre is ectomycorrhizal. It forms a sheath of fungal tissue around the short roots of its pine or spruce partner and a network of hyphae between the outer root cells, through which mineral nutrients and water gathered from the sand are traded for photosynthetic sugars from the tree. On the impoverished, free-draining, low-nitrogen soils of dune and heath pinewoods, this partnership is critical to tree establishment and growth, and the fungus is effectively confined to habitats where such soils occur.
The mycelium is long-lived and produces fruiting bodies year after year from the same patches, often in loose troops or arcs following the root systems of individual trees. Late fruiting allows it to exploit autumn rains after faster species have finished, and its habit of maturing partly buried in sand may reduce desiccation in the exposed, wind-scoured dune environment. Spores released at the sand surface are readily moved by wind across open dune systems.
Similar species
Tricholoma sulphureum is the same yellow but differs sharply in having distinctly spaced rather than crowded gills, a dry rather than viscid cap, a more uniform sulphur colour throughout, and a powerful odour of coal gas. Tricholoma sejunctum has a yellowish to olive cap streaked with dark radial fibrils but white to only faintly yellowish gills. Tricholoma portentosum shares the sticky cap and pine habitat but is grey to grey-brown with radial streaking, and only faintly yellow-tinged on gills and stem.
Cortinarius species of sandy pinewood may be similarly yellow-brown but are separated at once by the cobwebby veil on young specimens, rusty-brown mature gills and rusty-brown spore print. Tricholoma auratum, treated by some as a distinct dune species, is very close and differs mainly in cap tone and habitat detail. Bright sulphur gills, crowded and notched, on a ringless pale stem under sandy pines, with a white spore print, define this species.
