Mauve Parachute Identification Guide

A minute wine-purple parachute on a black wiry thread, growing on dead leaves and twigs in humid forest litter. This guide covers the pleated cap, the widely spaced gills, the insititious stem base and the small Marasmius relatives it is most often confused with.

First Impression in the Field

You find this species by colour, not by size. Working slowly through damp leaf litter in warm humid forest, you register a scatter of small saturated dots of wine-purple, magenta or dusky mauve, each no wider than a fingernail, apparently floating a centimetre or two above the ground. The stems that hold them are so fine and so dark that they vanish against shaded litter, which is exactly why the caps look suspended. Get down to litter level, put your head sideways, and the wiry black threads suddenly resolve.

The individual fruit bodies are tiny and the impulse is to dismiss them, but this is a well-marked species. The pleated umbrella outline, the intense purple-red pigment and the lacquered black stem are a distinctive package, and none of the three characters requires a microscope.

Setting, Substrate and Season

This is a litter saprotroph, not a soil or wood decomposer in the usual sense. It grows directly on dead leaves, leaf petioles, fallen palm and bamboo debris, and slender dead twigs, generally in shaded, permanently humid broadleaf forest. It also turns up along plantation margins, in botanic gardens, in bamboo stands and, in cooler regions, in heated glasshouses where tropical litter is maintained.

Distribution is broadly pantropical and warm-subtropical, extending into the humid margins of temperate zones. Fruiting follows rain and tends to be gregarious but scattered: dozens of individuals across a square metre of litter, each on its own leaf or twig, rather than tight clusters from a single point. In seasonal climates the flush follows the rainy season; in the subtropics expect it through the warm wet months.

Because the substrate is a single dead leaf, the fruit bodies are short-lived and easily overlooked once dry. However, they are marcescent: a shrivelled cap that looks finished will rehydrate after a shower and resume its shape and colour. Finding revived specimens on old litter is normal.

Reading the Cap

The cap is 5 to 20 mm across, occasionally slightly more. It begins as a minute hemispherical bead, then expands to convex or bell-shaped, often with a small central papilla or, in some collections, a shallow navel-like depression at the centre.

The surface is dry and matt, minutely velvety when examined with a hand lens rather than smooth or greasy. The defining structural feature is the pleating: deep, regular radial grooves run from the margin toward the disc, corresponding to the positions of the gills beneath, so the cap reads as a folded miniature parachute rather than a smooth dome. In young caps the pleats are shallow; they deepen markedly as the cap expands.

Colour is the memorable part. The disc is deep purple-red to blackish-purple; the field between the pleats grades outward to wine, magenta or mauve; and the extreme margin is paler, sometimes pinkish-tan or greyish lilac. Sun-bleached and aged specimens fade considerably, so always judge colour from the freshest individuals in the patch, and look at the disc rather than the margin.

The Gills

Turn a cap over with the tip of a knife. The gills are few, distant and narrow, typically around seven to sixteen reaching the stem, with short intermediate gills between them. They are white to pale cream, sometimes with a faint lilac or pinkish flush picked up from the cap, and the edges are even.

Attachment is adnexed to almost free. This is the point where careless identification goes wrong, so use a lens: the gills approach the stem apex and attach narrowly, but they do not fuse into a free collar encircling the stem. Several relatives possess exactly such a collar, called a collarium, and its presence or absence is a genus-level habit worth training your eye on.

Stipe and Base

The stipe is 15 to 60 mm long and well under a millimetre thick: filiform, wiry, tough and elastic rather than brittle. It is smooth and shining, as if lacquered or varnished. The apex is pale, often pinkish or straw-coloured, and the colour darkens rapidly downward through dark red-brown to black over the lower half.

The base is the single most useful character after cap colour. It is insititious, meaning the stem is inserted directly into the leaf or twig with no basal disc, no pad of mycelium and no ring of stiff hairs. Detach a specimen and inspect the substrate: you should see a small pinprick scar, not a fuzzy white anchor patch. This one observation excludes a large number of superficially similar small agarics.

Flesh and Colour Change

There is barely any flesh to speak of. The cap flesh is under a millimetre thick and pallid, the stem is tough and cartilaginous, and neither shows a colour change on cutting. There is no latex, no gel layer, and no distinctive odour recorded in fresh material. Because the tissue is so thin, avoid squashing specimens in a pocket; carry them in a rigid pot on a fragment of their own substrate.

Taking a Spore Print

A spore print from a cap this small takes patience. Cut the wiry stem close under the cap, place two or three caps gills-down on a black card or a glass slide, and enclose them in a small pot with a piece of damp tissue to prevent them drying out before they can drop. Leave overnight. The deposit is faint and white; against black card it reads as a pale dusting rather than a solid print. Working with several caps at once is the difference between a readable result and nothing at all.

Under the microscope, the cap surface carries so-called broom cells: club-shaped cells crowned with short finger-like projections. That pileipellis structure confirms placement in Marasmius and is the definitive check if you want certainty beyond field characters.

Separating the Look-alikes

Marasmius rotula. Same architecture, same black wiry insititious stem, but the cap is white to pale buff, and the gills attach to a distinct free collar around the stem apex. Cap colour alone settles it in the field; the collarium confirms it under a lens.

Marasmius siccus and Marasmius fulvoferrugineus. These share the deeply pleated cap and wiry dark stem but are rusty orange, tawny or ferruginous rather than purple-red. In fading specimens the distinction can blur, so check the freshest caps and the darkest part of the disc.

Marasmius pulcherripes. Pink to rose-pink, generally with a more conical and sharply papillate cap, and typically a shade smaller. The pigment lacks the deep wine and blackish-purple saturation of the mauve parachute.

Mycena species. Many small Mycena are pinkish or lilac, but their stems are hollow, brittle and snap cleanly, the base usually carries fine white hairs or a mycelial pad, the cap is finely striate rather than deeply pleated, and the flesh is soft and watery. Decisively, dried Mycena do not revive when rewetted.

Crinipellis species. Superficially marasmioid, but the cap is clothed in coarse radiating hairs, the stem is not insititious, and the substrate is often dead grass or herbaceous stems.

Marasmiellus and Gymnopus species. Fleshier caps, thicker stems, gills usually crowded rather than distant, and a basal mycelial pad present at the point of attachment.

Common questions

What does insititious mean and why does it matter here?
An insititious stem is attached directly to the substrate with no basal disc, mycelial pad or fringe of hairs at the point of contact. Detaching the fruit body leaves only a tiny scar on the leaf or twig. It is a strong character for this group of Marasmius and immediately separates the mauve parachute from small Mycena and Gymnopus species, which almost always show a visible pad or fuzz of mycelium at the base.
How do I tell it apart from Marasmius rotula?
Both have deeply pleated caps on black wiry insititious stems, but Marasmius rotula has a white to pale buff cap and, crucially, gills that fuse into a free collar encircling the stem apex. The mauve parachute has a saturated wine-purple to magenta cap and gills that attach narrowly to the stem without forming that collar.
What substrate should I search for it on?
Look at dead leaves lying on the forest floor, fallen leaf petioles, thin dead twigs, bamboo litter and palm frond debris, in shaded humid broadleaf forest. Each fruit body arises from a single small piece of litter, so search the litter layer itself rather than soil, logs or standing wood.
Do shrivelled specimens count as the same species?
Yes. Species in this group are marcescent, meaning they dry down without decaying and revive when moisture returns. A collapsed, faded cap on old litter can rehydrate within minutes of a shower and regain much of its shape and colour, so the same fruit body may be visible across several rain events.
