A yellow to apricot grassland coral whose slender branches fork repeatedly into blunt antler tips above a distinctly white, downy base. Common in mossy, unimproved turf.

Overview

Meadow Coral is the most familiar branched member of Clavulinopsis, a genus otherwise dominated by simple clubs and spindles. Rather than a single column, it builds a small yellow shrub 3 to 8 cm tall, with a short common trunk dividing into slender arms that fork again and again, each fork ending in a rounded or shallowly notched tip. The overall impression is of miniature deer antlers scattered across the moss.

It sits in the Clavariaceae alongside Clavaria and Clavulinopsis, and shares the family's affinity for old, low-nutrient grassland. Coral fungi as a whole are a form rather than a single lineage — branched fruiting bodies have evolved several times among the basidiomycetes — so a field guide's coral section brings together Ramaria, Clavulina, Ramariopsis, Artomyces and Clavulinopsis, which are not close relatives.

Meadow Coral is distinctive within that assemblage for its grassland habitat, its warm yellow to apricot colouring, and the conspicuous white felted base that anchors the cluster in moss. It is widespread and often abundant where suitable turf survives.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

A tuft 3 to 8 cm tall, occasionally reaching 10 cm, arising from a short common stem that divides low down into two to several main branches. Each branch forks repeatedly, typically two or three times, with the angles rounded rather than sharp. Branch tips are blunt, rounded or slightly crested — never pointed and never cup-shaped.

Branches and colour

Branches are smooth, dry and slightly shining, 2 to 5 mm thick, and coloured egg-yellow, ochre-yellow or warm apricot. Colour tends to be strongest at the tips and duller toward the base. Older or weathered specimens fade toward buff and may develop brownish patches where handled or bruised.

Base

The base is the single best character: it is white to pale cream and covered with a fine white down or felt, contrasting sharply with the yellow branches above. This white tomentose foot runs into the moss and is often hidden until the cluster is teased out.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is yellowish, firm but brittle, and typically not hollow. It often carries a distinctly mealy or farinaceous odour when broken, a useful supporting character in the field. The spore print is white; spores are broadly elliptical to subglobose and smooth, with a large apiculus.

Where and when it grows

Meadow Coral grows in short, mossy grassland — unimproved pasture, upland grazing, churchyards, lawns that are never fertilised, dune grassland and grassy woodland rides. It is particularly associated with dense moss carpets, where the white basal felt binds into the moss layer, and it tolerates both acidic and mildly calcareous soils.

The main fruiting season runs from late summer through autumn, continuing into early winter in mild oceanic climates. It is common across temperate and northern Europe, occurs widely in North America, and is reported from temperate Asia and parts of the Southern Hemisphere. Populations decline sharply where grassland is ploughed, reseeded or fertilised, so it is used alongside waxcaps as a grassland quality indicator.

Ecological role

Like the other grassland Clavariaceae, Clavulinopsis corniculata occupies the shallow soil and moss layer and has traditionally been described as a saprotroph breaking down fine roots, moss litter and soil organic matter. Recent work on carbon and nitrogen isotope signatures across the family suggests the relationship with living plants may be closer than simple decomposition, potentially a biotrophic association with grass and herb roots.

The mycelial network is perennial and slow-growing, and fruiting clusters often reappear in the same patches year after year. The branched form is functionally useful — it multiplies the fertile surface area relative to a simple club, and the elevated blunt tips release spores into air moving over the top of the moss layer. In grassland ecosystems the species contributes to nutrient turnover in the rooting zone and forms part of the distinctive fungal community that defines ancient turf.

Similar species

Clavulinopsis fusiformis (Golden Spindles) is the same yellow but forms unbranched, sharply pointed spindles fused into bundles, with no white downy base. Ramariopsis crocea is a smaller, more delicate orange coral without the felted white foot. Clavulina cristata has a comparable branching pattern but is white to greyish with finely toothed, crested tips rather than blunt yellow ones.

Ramaria species can look similar in gross form but are generally much larger, more massively branched from a thick fleshy trunk, and have yellow to ochre spore prints rather than white; most also grow in woodland litter rather than open turf. Any yellow coral emerging directly from dead wood is more likely Calocera viscosa, which is gelatinous and rubbery rather than brittle and lacks the white basal felt.
