Cuphophyllus pratensis

A robust apricot-buff waxcap with a dry, matt cap, thick pale decurrent gills running well down the stem, and a stout stipe tapering to the base.
Overview
The Meadow Waxcap is the sturdiest and most solid-looking of the common grassland waxcaps. Its cap is broad, dry and matt rather than glossy, coloured a soft apricot, peach or tawny buff, and its thick, pale, widely spaced gills run conspicuously down the stem. Where the brightly coloured Hygrocybe species look glassy and fragile, this one feels dense and slightly leathery.
It is now placed in Cuphophyllus, a genus split from Hygrocybe on the basis of DNA and of consistent morphology: decurrent gills, duller pastel colours, dry caps and interwoven rather than parallel gill tissue. Older field guides list it as Hygrocybe pratensis or Camarophyllus pratensis, and both names remain in wide use.
Along with the Snowy Waxcap it is one of the two Cuphophyllus species most likely to be met in autumn turf, and it is a reliable member of the waxcap grassland community used to assess the conservation value of old meadows and churchyards.
How to identify it
Cap
3–10 cm across, convex then flattening and often becoming broadly umbonate or slightly depressed, with a margin that is at first inrolled and later wavy and sometimes upturned. The surface is dry and matt to finely felted, never slimy, and characteristically cracks into fine radial fissures in dry weather. Colour is a warm apricot to salmon-buff or pale tawny orange, fading paler towards the margin.
Gills
Thick, waxy, widely spaced and strongly decurrent, running well down onto the stem and often interveined near the stem apex. They are paler than the cap — cream, pale buff or faintly pinkish-apricot — and the deep decurrence combined with the pale colour is the fastest field character.
Stipe
Stout, 3–8 cm tall and 0.5–1.5 cm thick, dry, smooth to finely fibrillose, concolorous with the cap or paler, and usually tapering noticeably towards the base. It is solid when young, becoming stuffed or hollow, and lacks both a ring and a volva.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thick and firm for a waxcap, whitish to pale apricot, and does not change colour when cut or bruised. The spore print is white and the spores are smooth and broadly ellipsoid.
Where and when it grows
A species of old, closed, unimproved grassland: hay meadows, upland sheep pasture, chalk downland, churchyards, cemetery lawns, coastal grassland and long-established parkland. It also strays into grassy woodland margins and rides more readily than most waxcaps. Soils are typically neutral to slightly calcareous and low in added nutrients.
Fruiting begins in late summer and continues through autumn until frost, usually in scattered troops or rings across the turf. It is common and widespread throughout temperate Europe and is recorded across North America and parts of Asia, though as with all waxcaps it has declined where old grassland has been agriculturally improved.
Ecological role
Cuphophyllus pratensis forms a persistent soil mycelium in grassland and is not a decomposer of wood or coarse litter. Isotopic and molecular studies indicate that grassland waxcaps obtain carbon through a biotrophic association rather than by free-living decay, with mosses and grass roots implicated as partners; the group has proved essentially impossible to grow on standard laboratory media.
The mycelium is long-lived and often produces fruit bodies in arcs or partial rings, reflecting the slow outward growth of a colony that may be decades old. Because establishment is so slow and the fungus is intolerant of fertiliser and ploughing, its presence is used alongside other waxcaps as an indicator of grassland continuity.
Similar species
Cuphophyllus virgineus, the Snowy Waxcap, shares the decurrent gills and dry cap but is white to ivory throughout and much more slender. Cuphophyllus colemannianus is smaller with a grey-brown to date-brown cap and very deeply decurrent gills. Bright orange Hygrocybe species such as H. chlorophana and H. reidii differ in having viscid or smooth caps, adnexed rather than decurrent gills, and more saturated colours.
Across the turf, small Clitocybe and Clitopilus species can present a similar decurrent-gilled silhouette, but Clitocybe species have thin, crowded, non-waxy gills, and Clitopilus prunulus has a pale grey-white suede cap with gills that flush pink and a pink spore print rather than white. The waxy, thick, distant gills and apricot tone of the Meadow Waxcap are diagnostic.
