An extremely fragile white to cream conical mushroom of lawns and short grass that appears overnight and collapses within hours, betrayed by its rusty cinnamon spore print.
Overview
The Milky Conecap is one of the most frequently noticed lawn fungi of temperate regions, chiefly because it appears in numbers after warm rain and then vanishes by the afternoon. It is a member of Conocybe, a large genus in the family Bolbitiaceae characterised by thin, conical to bell-shaped caps, slender fragile stems, and rusty to cinnamon-brown spores. Older literature places it under the names Conocybe lactea and Conocybe albipes, both of which are still widely encountered.
What makes the species distinctive is the contrast between its pale, almost chalky appearance and the warm rusty tone of its mature gills and spore deposit. Most white lawn mushrooms have white spores; a white conical cap paired with rust-coloured spores narrows the field dramatically.
Within the fungal world Conocybe sits among the small, ephemeral grassland and dung-associated decomposers, alongside genera such as Bolbitius, Panaeolus and Parasola, all of which are built for a very short fruiting life.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 1-2.5 cm across and 1-3 cm tall, sharply conical to narrowly bell-shaped, expanding only slightly with age. The surface is dry and matt, whitish to milk-cream, sometimes with a faint ochre or tan flush over the centre. The margin is finely grooved or wrinkled, and the whole cap is so thin that it is almost translucent when moist.
Gills
Gills are narrow, crowded, and adnexed to almost free. They begin whitish to pale buff and pass through pale cinnamon to a warm rusty brown as the spores ripen, which is often the first hint of the species' true identity.
Stipe
The stem is 4-10 cm long but only 1-2 mm thick, white, hollow, very brittle, finely powdery to minutely striate along its length, and usually slightly swollen or bulbous at the base. There is no ring and no volva.
Flesh and spore print
Flesh is extremely thin and whitish, with no colour change when cut. The spore print is a distinct rusty cinnamon-brown. The fruit body is so delicate that it typically wilts, droops and collapses within a single day.
Where and when it grows
The Milky Conecap grows in short grass: lawns, playing fields, pastures, park turf, roadside verges, and mossy grassy banks. It favours ground rich in decaying grass thatch and organic matter and often appears in scattered troops rather than tight clusters, sometimes dozens at a time after overnight rain.
It fruits from late spring through to autumn wherever warmth and moisture coincide, and is widespread across Europe and North America, with records from many other temperate and subtropical regions. Because the fruit bodies are so short-lived, the species is far more common than casual observation suggests.
Ecological role
This is a saprotrophic fungus. Its mycelium lives in the thatch layer and upper soil of grassland, breaking down dead grass leaves, roots and other plant debris and returning nutrients to the turf. It forms no partnership with living plants and attacks nothing.
The life cycle is compressed into hours rather than days: mycelium responds quickly to rainfall, pushes up thin-walled fruit bodies overnight, releases spores during the cool of the morning, then collapses as the sun dries the turf. This rapid-cycle strategy allows repeated fruiting throughout a single wet season.
Similar species
Other small pale lawn fungi are separated mainly by spore colour and texture. Bolbitius titubans (Yellow Fieldcap) has a sticky, egg-yellow young cap that greys as it flattens, and although its spores are also rusty, the cap is never chalk-white and is viscid rather than dry. Parasola plicatilis has a grey, deeply pleated parasol-like cap and a black spore print, and it dissolves at the margin rather than simply wilting. Panaeolus species have a mottled grey-black gill face and a blackish spore print.
Among the tougher lawn species, Marasmius oreades has a pliant, elastic stem, broad, well-spaced pale gills and a white spore print, and its cap is buff and domed rather than sharply conical. Other Conocybe and Pholiotina species are separated by browner caps, and Pholiotina often shows a distinct membranous ring on the stem, which the Milky Conecap never has.
