A stout, entirely milk-white tropical mushroom with a thick fleshy cap, crowded white gills and a solid club-shaped stipe. It fruits from casing soil over composting straw in hot, humid conditions.

Overview

Calocybe indica is a robust, uniformly white gilled fungus described from India and characteristic of hot, humid lowland conditions. Everything about it is heavy-set: a thick fleshy cap, a solid stipe often as broad as a thumb, and dense white flesh that keeps its shape and colour rather than collapsing or discolouring as many pale mushrooms do.

The genus Calocybe (Lyophyllaceae) holds firm-fleshed, white-spored mushrooms with crowded, narrowly attached gills and no ring or volva — its best-known temperate member is the spring-fruiting St George's Mushroom, C. gambosa, which C. indica resembles in structure while being adapted to tropical heat instead of cool spring weather.

It is a warm-climate species with a high optimum temperature, which is why it appears through the hottest, wettest part of the Indian year when many other soil fungi are absent, and why it is grown on straw beds in regions too hot for temperate cultivated species.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 5–15 cm across, at first hemispherical and firmly domed, then convex and eventually flat or slightly depressed in the centre, occasionally with a low umbo. The surface is dry, smooth to very finely silky, and pure milky white throughout, sometimes ageing to the faintest cream or ivory at the disc. The margin is thick, incurved when young, and may split shallowly in dry air.

Gills

Gills are white and stay white, crowded, narrow, and attached to the stipe by a sinuate or narrowly adnexed connection — they neither run down the stem nor stand fully free. They are unequal in length, with many short gills between the full-length ones.

Stipe

The stipe is 4–10 cm tall and 1–3 cm thick, solid, white, smooth or slightly fibrous, cylindrical to club-shaped, often thickened toward a bluntly rounded or slightly bulbous base. There is no ring and no volva at any stage; the base sits directly in the casing soil with white mycelial strands attached.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thick, compact and pure white, and does not change colour on cutting or bruising — no yellowing, reddening or blackening. The odour is mild and mushroomy. The spore print is white, and the spores are small, smooth and ellipsoid.

Where and when it grows

Calocybe indica is a species of hot, humid, nutrient-rich ground. It occurs on decaying plant matter in soil — rich garden ground, roadside verges, field margins and composting agricultural residues — and is grown on beds of pasteurised paddy straw, wheat straw or sugarcane residue covered with a casing layer of soil or coir, from which the fruiting bodies emerge singly or in small groups.

Its native range centres on the Indian subcontinent, with records from West Bengal and across tropical and subtropical South Asia, and it is grown in similar climates elsewhere. Fruiting is tied to warmth and moisture: it appears through the monsoon and the hot summer months at temperatures around 30–35 °C with very high humidity, a range that suits few other large white gilled mushrooms.

Ecological role

The fungus is a saprotroph. Its mycelium colonises straw and other cellulose-rich plant residues, degrading them and drawing nutrients from partly decomposed organic matter in the soil beneath. Because a casing layer of soil is required to trigger fruiting, it behaves like a soil-associated decomposer rather than a pure surface-litter species: the mycelium runs through the substrate, then responds to the moist, lower-nutrient casing by forming pinheads at the interface.

High temperature tolerance is its defining ecological trait. Where cool-season decomposers stall in tropical summer heat, C. indica grows vigorously, occupying straw and crop residue during exactly the period when bacterial breakdown is fastest. Fruiting bodies are long-lasting for their size — the dense flesh resists collapse for several days — which extends the window for spore release in a climate where soft mushrooms deliquesce quickly.

Similar species

Calocybe gambosa, the St George's Mushroom, is the closest structural relative but is a cool temperate spring species with a cream to buff rather than pure white cap and a strong mealy odour, and it grows in grassland rings, not on straw beds. Volvariella volvacea, which shares its tropical straw habitat, is separated instantly by its grey-brown cap, its gills turning pink, its salmon spore print and the sac-like volva at the stipe base.

Agaricus species can look similar in outline but have free gills that darken through pink to chocolate brown, a dark brown spore print and a ring on the stipe. Leucoagaricus and Chlorophyllum species also start white and have white to greenish prints, but carry a movable ring and usually develop scales or a coloured central disc on the cap. The unchanging pure white flesh, white print, sinuate gills, and the complete absence of both ring and volva together define C. indica.
