Mosaic Puffball Identification Guide

A practical field walk-through for Calvatia utriformis, from the cracked polygonal skin and turban shape to the persistent chambered cup that survives the winter in open turf.

The Setting and the First Glance

You normally notice this species long before you have decided to look at it. Something pale and rounded sits in short turf, visible from thirty paces because nothing else in a grazed sward is white and the size of a clenched fist. The ground under it is open and unshaded: sheep-cropped upland pasture, coastal dune grassland, sandy commons, heath margins, old playing fields, sometimes a neglected lawn. It rises straight out of the soil among grass roots and never grows on wood. It is also rarely alone. Once you have one, sweep the same slope with your eyes and you will usually pick out a second and a third, plus the ragged grey bowls of last season's crop still sitting in the turf.

Size sets the first bracket. A mature fruit body is roughly 8 to 20 cm across and about as tall, occasionally larger. The outline is the second clue, because it is not a sphere. The top is broad and slightly flattened, the body narrows downwards into a thick, folded, stalk-like base, and the whole thing reads as a turban, a squat pear, or an upturned bell. That base is not decorative: it is a solid sterile plug that will matter later.

Reading the Outer Skin

The outer wall, the exoperidium, gives the species its English name. On a young fruit body it is white and finely felted or granular. As the body expands, that layer cannot keep up and cracks into flat-topped polygonal warts separated by narrow grooves, exactly like dried mud on a pond bed or the crazed glaze on old pottery. The plates are coarsest and most sharply defined over the top and shoulders, and fade into smooth folds and wrinkles down the base. With age the whole surface dulls from white to buff, then ochre, then a weathered grey-brown, and the mosaic plates begin to flake away.

Run a thumb over it. The texture is firm and slightly suede-like when young, papery when old. There are no spines, no detachable pyramidal warts leaving pale scars, and no defined pore at the apex.

Opening, and the Cup That Stays Behind

This is the single most reliable structural character. The fruit body does not release spores through a neat apical mouth. Instead the entire upper wall breaks down and tears away irregularly, leaving a broad, ragged, bowl-shaped remnant made of the tough sterile base. Those bowls persist for months, greying and weathering, so in late winter a pasture can be dotted with what look like small stone cups. Finding those cups in spring tells you the species was fruiting there the previous autumn.

Cut a fruit body vertically and you can see why. The lower third is a distinct sterile base, spongy and finely chambered like a stiff foam, and it is separated from the spore mass above by a thin membrane-like boundary. That chambered, persistent base is the feature to insist on.

The Interior, Stage by Stage

A vertical cut also tells you the age. A young fruit body is pure white throughout, firm and completely uniform, with no internal outline, no silhouette of a developing gilled mushroom, and no marbling. As it matures the upper interior yellows, then turns olive, then becomes a dry, powdery, umber-brown dust threaded with fine capillitium fibres. The sterile base stays paler and keeps its chambered structure right through.

Taking a Spore Reading

Puffballs cannot be spore-printed in the usual way, since there are no gills to drop from. The equivalent is simple: hold a mature fruit body over a sheet of white paper and tap the opened top. The deposit is olive-brown to deep umber and settles as an extremely fine powder. Under a hand lens the dust is visibly tangled with brown thread-like capillitium. With a microscope the spores are globose, roughly 4 to 5.5 µm, and minutely warted or spiny, and the capillitium threads are brown, thick-walled and sparsely branched. Immature white material gives no deposit at all, which is itself a useful age check.

Substrate and Season

The species is a soil saprotroph of nutrient-poor, well-drained, often sandy or calcareous grassland, and it fruits from midsummer through late autumn. It shares that habitat with waxcaps, earthtongues and fairy clubs, so a site producing good Mosaic Puffballs is usually worth surveying for the rest of the grassland fungi at the same time. The weathered cups then hold on into winter and spring.

Separating It From Its Nearest Look-alikes

Calvatia gigantea is enormously larger, often 30 to 70 cm, and its skin stays smooth and kid-leather-like rather than breaking into a mosaic. It has no substantial sterile base, so it disintegrates into scattered brown fragments rather than leaving a tidy cup.

Apioperdon (Lycoperdon) excipuliforme, the pestle puffball, is tall and club-shaped with a long cylindrical stalk, its skin bears soft spines and granules rather than polygonal plates, and it favours woodland and leaf litter.

Lycoperdon perlatum is much smaller, has detachable pyramidal spines that leave a pattern of pale scars, and opens by a neat, defined apical pore.

Vascellum pratense shares the grassland habitat but is only 2 to 4 cm, has a nearly smooth to finely granular skin, opens by a distinct apical mouth, and shows a clean transverse membrane over its short sterile base rather than a deep chambered plug.

Bovista species are small, smooth, and detach from the ground to blow about; their inner wall is papery and lead-grey and there is no sterile base at all.

Scleroderma species are the easiest to rule out on section. Their wall is thick, hard and rind-like, and the interior turns purple-black very early, marbled with white veins, with no chambered basal plug.
