Mountain Blond Morel Identification Guide

How to work through Morchella frustrata in spring mountain forest, using its pale flattened ridges, vertically aligned pits, shallow sinus and completely hollow interior.

The Setting

This is a spring mountain species of western North America, and habitat does an unusual amount of the identification work. Picture mixed conifer forest between roughly 600 and 2000 metres: Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, white fir and incense cedar, often where the stand opens onto a creek bottom with cottonwood, bigleaf maple, dogwood or alder mixed in. The ground is duff and moss over damp mineral soil on benches, shaded slopes and streamside terraces. Crucially, this species fruits on undisturbed, unburned ground; it is a natural-habitat morel rather than a fire-follower.

Timing tracks the retreating snowline. Fruiting begins at lower elevations soon after snowmelt and moves progressively uphill through spring, so the same species can be found over a two-month window at different heights on the same mountain.

First Impression

What you see is an upright, pale, deeply pitted head on a whitish stalk, standing 6 to 15 cm tall in the duff. The overall tone is blond: pale grey when young, and increasingly bleached and frosted-looking as the ridges flatten and pale with age. Against dark conifer litter this pale cast is often the thing that catches your eye, and the fruit bodies are frequently scattered singly rather than in tight clusters.

Reading the Head

The fertile head is conical to broadly conical or ovoid, 3 to 8 cm tall and 2 to 5 cm wide, and its surface is a network of pits and ridges. Two aspects matter.

First, arrangement. The primary ridges run more or less vertically from base to apex, with shorter transverse ridges cutting between them, so the pits are elongated vertically and loosely aligned in columns. It is a regular, oriented pattern, not the random polygonal chaos of some other groups.

Second, colour behaviour. Young specimens are pale grey to grey-tan overall with ridges about the same colour as the pit floors. With maturity the ridges broaden, flatten and pale to cream or nearly white, while the pit floors keep a darker grey-tan or ochre tone. The result is a frosted, two-tone head, and this is where the English name comes from. What the ridges do not do is darken. If the ridges are turning brown, grey-black or charcoal with age, you are looking at something else.

Reading the Junction With the Stalk

Slice the fruit body vertically from apex to base, which is the single most informative cut in the whole genus. Look at where the lower edge of the head meets the stalk. In this species the head is attached directly to the stalk at its base, with at most a very shallow groove, a few millimetres deep, running around the junction. There is no deep hanging skirt and no pronounced flaring lip.

The same cut shows the interior. From the apex of the head down through the entire stalk there is one continuous hollow chamber. No cotton wool, no partitions, no wads of tissue.

Reading the Stalk

The stalk is 3 to 8 cm long and 1.5 to 4 cm thick, roughly cylindrical or slightly enlarged downwards, white to off-white when young and ageing to pale ochre or dull cream. Its surface is finely granular and minutely roughened, sometimes with shallow longitudinal folds or a few wrinkles near the base. The wall is thin and the interior may be lightly granular but is otherwise empty.

Flesh and Colour Change

The flesh is thin, brittle and slightly waxy, whitish throughout. It does not exude latex, does not stain when cut, and does not bruise on handling. Absence of any colour change is itself a character worth recording.

Getting a Spore Deposit

Morels are cup fungus relatives and fire their spores actively, so a print works differently from a gilled mushroom. Place a mature head on white or pale grey paper inside a covered container with a damp tissue and leave it several hours. The deposit appears as pale cream to faintly yellowish patches and puffs rather than an even sheet, and a very ripe specimen may visibly release a smoke-like cloud if breathed on or jostled. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid and large, roughly 20 to 25 by 12 to 16 µm, and typically lack conspicuous oil droplets.

Separating It From Look-alikes on Morphology

Morchella tridentina is the closest confusion, being another pale mountain morel. It differs in showing a distinct sinus, a definite groove and often a flaring, slightly projecting lip where the head meets the stalk, and its ridges commonly develop tan to reddish-brown tones on the edges.

Morchella snyderi has ridges that darken markedly to grey-brown or blackish with age, a pronounced sinus, and a stalk whose base becomes strongly pitted and chambered, with conspicuous lacunae.

Morchella americana and the wider yellow morel group are lowland fungi of hardwoods such as elm, ash, apple and cottonwood floodplains. Their heads become yellow-tan to ochre with irregularly arranged, more rounded pits rather than a vertically aligned pattern.

Morchella importuna shows a ladder-like arrangement of strictly vertical and strictly horizontal ridges that blacken with age, and it favours landscaping wood chips and disturbed urban ground.

Burn-site morels such as Morchella tomentosa, M. sextelata and M. eximia occur on ground burned the previous year, often in dense troops, and range from grey-tomentose to rich tan with darkening ridges.

Verpa species are the classic structural mimic. Their cap hangs free like a skirt, attached only at the very apex of the stalk, and their stalks are stuffed with cottony pith rather than being hollow. Verpa bohemica is longitudinally wrinkled rather than pitted.

Gyromitra species have irregular, brain-like or saddle-shaped heads that are folded rather than pitted, and their interiors are chambered and convoluted rather than a single hollow.
