Northern Milkcap Identification Guide

A large, slippery, lilac-grey milkcap of damp northern birch and spruce woods whose copious white milk dries greyish-olive on the gills. This guide covers the full field read and the milk-colour tests that separate it from its relatives.

First Impressions and the Setting

You usually meet Lactarius trivialis in wet ground in a northern or montane forest: birch and spruce mixed together, deep feather moss underfoot, blueberry and Sphagnum in the hollows, a ditch bank or a boggy path edge. It is one of the bulkiest milkcaps you will meet there and it fruits in numbers, so the first impression is often of several broad, slippery, lead-coloured caps pushing up through moss with leaves and needles glued to their surfaces.

Two things register immediately: the size, which is far greater than most milkcaps of the same woods, and the greasiness. In wet weather the cap is genuinely slimy, and the stem is tacky as well. Pick one and your fingers stay sticky.

Reading the Cap

Caps reach 5-15 cm and occasionally 20 cm. They start convex with a strongly inrolled margin, flatten out, and finally become broadly funnel-shaped with a wavy edge. The surface is smooth, without hairs or a bearded margin, viscid to slimy when moist and shining when it dries.

Colour is the character that gives most people trouble, because it is genuinely variable and it fades. Fresh caps are lilac-grey, violet-grey, leaden or greyish-brown, often with a faint bloom. As they age and dry they lose the violet cast entirely and become dull ochre-buff, tan or dirty leather-brown, sometimes blotched. Look for vague, watery, darker concentric bands near the margin, which are usually visible on a fresh cap and quite absent on an old one. Do not build the identification on colour alone; use it as one line of evidence.

Gills, Milk and the Key Colour Change

Gills are adnate to slightly decurrent, crowded, narrow, and often forked near the stem. They are whitish to pale cream at first, then pale ochre-buff. Damaged areas and the tracks left by dried milk stain a distinctive greyish-olive to dull brown.

Now the milk, which is the heart of the identification. Scratch cleanly across the gills with a knife tip on a young, damp specimen; older or dry caps give little. The milk is copious and pure white. Watch a drop on the blade for a full minute: it stays white, with no lilac, yellow or orange flush.

Then do the handkerchief test. Wipe milk onto a white cotton cloth or a scrap of white paper and set it aside. Check again at fifteen and thirty minutes. On L. trivialis the drying milk turns a greyish, olive-grey or greenish-grey shade, and the same reaction shows on the gills as dull olive-grey stains. That combination, white milk that is unchanging in the air but dries greyish-olive, is the practical fingerprint of the species.

Stipe, Base and Flesh

The stem is 5-12 cm long and 1.5-3 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly club-shaped, tapering a little at the base. It is viscid when wet, and paler than the cap: whitish-grey, pale lilac-buff, sometimes with a faint pinkish wash. Shallow, poorly defined depressions (scrobicules) may be present on the surface but are never the strong, brightly coloured pits seen in some other milkcaps.

Cut it lengthways. Young stems are stuffed with soft tissue, older ones hollow with a wide, single cavity, and they snap cleanly with the characteristic chalky, granular fracture of the Russulaceae rather than tearing into fibres. Flesh is white and brittle, greying slowly in old caps. There is no dramatic bruising reaction beyond the greyish milk stains already described.

Smell is faint and unremarkable, at most slightly fruity or oily in mass. Do not expect an aromatic species.

Taking and Reading a Spore Print

This is an easy species to print because the cap is thick and holds moisture. Cut the stem flush, set the cap gill-side down on clear glass or a card that is half white and half black, cover it with a box to stop it drying, and leave it two to four hours or overnight.

The deposit is pale cream to pale ochre-buff, never pure white and never deep ochre. Because thin films always read paler than they are, scrape the powder into a thick ridge with a blade before judging the colour, and compare it in daylight against a genuinely white sheet of paper. Under a microscope the spores are broadly ellipsoid with an ornament of warts and ridges forming a partial network, the ornament staining blue-black in Melzer's reagent.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

Lactarius trivialis is ectomycorrhizal, forming root sheaths with birch and Norway spruce above all, and it is strongly tied to damp, acidic, mossy ground. Look along ditch banks, in Sphagnum margins, in wet spruce plantations in cool regions and throughout boreal and montane birch forest. It fruits from August to October, often gregariously and in the same spots year after year, which is what you would expect from a long-lived mycorrhizal partner rather than a wandering decomposer.

Because the association is with particular trees, the trees are part of the identification. A large, slimy, lilac-grey milkcap under oak or beech in warm lowland woodland is almost certainly something else.

Separating It From Look-Alikes

Lactarius vietus is the commonest confusion in birch woods. It is much smaller, 3-8 cm, with thinner flesh and a paler greyish-lilac cap, and its white milk dries a clean grey on the gills far faster, usually within a few minutes.

Lactarius uvidus has a similar pale greyish-lilac cap, but its white milk turns distinctly lilac or violet on the gills and in the cut flesh within about a minute. That violet reaction is decisive and it is worth waiting for it before dismissing a collection.

Lactarius blennius is a beech associate, with an olive-grey to olive-green cap conspicuously spotted with darker, concentrically arranged blotches. Its milk also dries grey, so separate it on cap pattern and on host tree.

Lactarius turpis (also known as L. necator) shares birch and spruce woods but is much darker: a heavy olive-brown to blackish-green cap with a downy, olive margin, and milk that stains the flesh brown.

Lactarius flexuosus is smaller with a strongly lobed, wavy cap, distinctly distant gills and a drier surface.

Russula species growing alongside are separated instantly by cutting the gills: no milk appears at all.
