A thick, corky, dull-coloured bracket on oak whose underside is carved into a deep labyrinth of thick-walled winding channels.

Overview

The Oak Mazegill is the type species of Daedalea, a genus named after Daedalus and his labyrinth for exactly the reason its underside suggests. Rather than round tubes, the fruit body produces thick-walled channels that wind, branch and rejoin into a genuine maze several millimetres deep — the most pronounced labyrinthine hymenophore of any common temperate bracket.

Everything about the fungus is built for permanence. The context is thick, corky and pale, the whole bracket is rigid, and a single fruit body may persist for several years, adding new tube layers and slowly weathering to grey while its maze stays intact. Dried specimens keep their structure so well that they are a staple of teaching collections.

It is a brown-rot fungus, unlike most of the Trametes and Trichaptum brackets it shares woodland with, and it has a strong and consistent association with oak.

How to identify it

Cap

Brackets are 5-20 cm across and 3-8 cm thick, semicircular to hoof-like or shelf-like, broadly attached and stalkless, sometimes fused into a small tier. The upper surface is uneven, bumpy and often furrowed, dull ochre-buff to greyish brown or wood-brown, weathering grey and frequently greened by algae. Zoning, when present, is faint and irregular. The margin is thick and blunt, not thin and sharp.

Pores

The underside is the diagnostic feature: a deep labyrinth of elongated, winding channels with thick, blunt, cream to pale buff walls, the openings 1-3 mm wide and the maze extending 1-4 cm into the fruit body. In places the walls become almost plate-like, but they remain thick and interconnected, never forming clean radiating gills. There is no colour change where handled.

Flesh & spore print

The context is pale wood-brown to buff, thick, corky and rigid, continuous with the tube walls so that a cut section shows one uniform tissue. The bracket is stalkless and rigid, and dried material scarcely changes shape. The spore print is white.

Where and when it grows

This species is closely tied to oak. It fruits on stumps, fallen trunks, standing dead trees and the dead heartwood of living oaks, and it is a familiar coloniser of worked oak left outdoors — fence posts, gate rails, sleepers, benches and structural beams. Sweet chestnut and occasionally other hardwoods are used, but oak dominates the records.

It occurs throughout the range of oak in Europe, temperate Asia and North America, and is common in ancient woodland, parkland, wood pasture and hedgerows. New brackets typically develop in late summer and autumn, but because the fruit bodies are perennial in effect, specimens can be found and identified in every month of the year.

Ecological role

The Oak Mazegill causes a brown rot, removing cellulose while leaving lignin behind, so infected wood darkens to reddish brown and breaks into the characteristic cubical blocks that crumble to powder between the fingers. This makes it structurally very different from the white-rot Trametes brackets around it, and it is a major factor in the decay of oak heartwood, standing dead oaks and outdoor oak timber.

By hollowing the heartwood of veteran oaks while the sapwood remains sound, it contributes to the formation of hollow trunks that are among the most valuable habitats in ancient woodland, supporting roosting bats, nesting birds and a large specialist invertebrate fauna. The brown crumbly residue it produces is itself a substrate for a range of saproxylic beetles.

Similar species

Daedaleopsis confragosa is thinner and more flattened, with a smoother reddish-brown zoned upper surface, a much shallower maze with thin walls, and a pale underside that flushes pink-red where scratched — the Oak Mazegill shows no such reaction and has far thicker walls. Trametes gibbosa is chalky white with a basal hump and only radially elongated slots rather than a deep labyrinth, and favours beech.

Lenzites betulinus has thin, clean radiating gill plates and a hairy zoned cap on a thin leathery body. Gloeophyllum sepiarium has rust-brown gill-like plates and a warm brown hairy upper surface with an orange growing edge, and grows on conifers. Fomitopsis species share the brown-rot habit and thick body but have small round pores rather than a maze.

Common questions about Oak Mazegill

What makes the maze different from other maze-like brackets?
Depth and wall thickness. The channels here run one to four centimetres into the fruit body and their walls are thick and blunt, whereas Daedaleopsis and Trametes gibbosa have shallow mazes with thin walls.
Does it only grow on oak?
Almost always. Oak stumps, trunks, standing dead oaks and outdoor oak timber account for nearly all records, with sweet chestnut an occasional alternative.
What does brown rot look like in the wood?
Colonised wood turns reddish brown and cracks into rectangular cubes that crumble to powder, quite unlike the pale stringy residue left by white-rot brackets.
How long does a bracket last?
Years. The corky rigid fruit body persists on the substrate through repeated winters, weathering grey and accumulating algae while the maze underneath stays intact.
