Oakmoss Identification Guide
A practical walk through recognising Evernia prunastri in the field, from the springy grey-green tufts on oak bark to the chalk-white underside that settles the identification. Includes the branch-section test and morphological separation from Ramalina, Pseudevernia and Usnea.
The first impression, and where you are standing
Oakmoss announces itself as a soft, bushy, pale grey-green tuft clinging to bark, usually somewhere between knee height and the first big limb of a mature broadleaved tree. The classic setting is a wind-exposed oak in parkland, an old hedgerow line, an orchard, or the scrubby edge of a heath where the air moves freely and the light reaches the trunk. If you have walked out after a gale you will often meet it first on the ground, because storm-shed twigs bring canopy lichens down to eye level, and a fallen oak or hawthorn branch can carry a dozen well-grown thalli.
Two things register immediately. First, the growth is three-dimensional and shrubby rather than flat and painted on: the tufts stand away from the bark and you can slide a fingernail underneath them. Second, they are strap-shaped, not thread-like. That combination narrows the field very quickly, because most bark lichens are either crusts fused to the substrate or leafy rosettes pressed against it.
Reading the branch architecture
Take one tuft and trace it back. Oakmoss grows from a single narrow attachment point and then forks repeatedly, each fork splitting into two roughly equal arms, so the outline is antler-like. Individual tufts are commonly 2 to 8 cm across, occasionally larger on undisturbed old trees, and the branches are typically 2 to 6 mm wide, broadening slightly toward the tips and often ending in blunt, slightly frayed points.
Texture is worth a moment. When the thallus is dry it is stiff, papery and snaps cleanly; when it is damp it turns supple, rubbery and slightly leathery. Because half the described characters shift with moisture, carry a small spray bottle and wet the specimen before judging colour and flexibility.
The two surfaces, which is the character that matters most
Oakmoss is strongly dorsiventral, meaning it has a distinct top and bottom, and this is the single most useful field character.
The upper surface is a soft grey-green to slightly yellow-green, matt rather than shiny, and carries a raised network of low ridges enclosing shallow pits. Under a hand lens the effect is reticulate, a little like hammered metal or a coarse mesh laid over the surface. The lower surface, by contrast, is chalk-white to very pale cream, usually smoother, and often channelled or shallowly grooved down the middle of each strap. There are no rhizines, no root-like anchoring hairs, along that pale face.
Roll a branch slowly between finger and thumb. Green above, white below, repeated along every branch, is close to conclusive for Evernia prunastri in the temperate broadleaved woodland setting.
Section, medulla and the pull test
Tear a branch across. The cross-section is flattened, sometimes with slightly inrolled margins, never a neat circle. Inside you will find a thin cortex over a loose, cottony white medulla. Crucially there is no tough central cord. Pull a branch apart slowly: oakmoss parts with a soft, cottony break, while a superficially similar beard lichen resists and finally reveals a single elastic white thread running the length of the branch. That pull test takes two seconds and eliminates an entire genus.
Soredia, isidia and the rare fertile discs
Along the margins and on the raised ridges you will usually see soralia: granular to mealy patches of pale greenish-white powder where the surface has ruptured and the lichen is shedding vegetative propagules. Under a lens the powder is granular rather than smooth. These soralia are the normal means of reproduction, and most material you encounter will carry them somewhere.
What you will very rarely see are apothecia, the sexual fruiting discs. When present they are small reddish-brown to chestnut cups borne on short lateral stalks near the branch tips, and they are uncommon enough that a fertile collection is worth photographing carefully.
Where the spore print step goes
The standard mushroom protocol of laying a cap on paper overnight simply has no equivalent here. There is no free-standing spore-bearing surface to shed onto card, and apothecia are too scarce to rely on. In their place, lichenologists use spot tests. A drop of potassium hydroxide solution on the upper cortex commonly produces a yellow flush, which is consistent with the atranorin normally present, while medullary reactions are weak or unhelpful. Treat spot tests as supporting evidence only. The morphology, especially the two-toned strap, does the real work, and a confident field identification of well-grown oakmoss does not need chemistry at all.
Substrate, exposure and season
Oakmoss is a bark dweller with a real preference for oak, which is where the English name comes from, but it is by no means restricted to it. Look also on ash, hawthorn, apple, blackthorn, willow, birch and elder, and on the twigs of scrubby hedges.
The habitat preference is for good light and moving, humid air. Deep shade inside a dense closed canopy produces little of it, while an isolated field oak, an avenue tree or a wind-pruned hedgerow can be thickly draped. It has moderate tolerance of air pollution: it disappears from the most heavily affected areas and returns as conditions improve, so its presence carries real information about a site.
There is no fruiting season to plan around. The thallus is perennial and present all year, so the practical advice is simply to look after rain, when colour and texture read most reliably.
Separating it from the closest look-alikes
Work through these on structure alone.
Ramalina farinacea is also strap-like and tufted on bark, but it is essentially the same pale greenish grey on both faces. There is no white underside, the straps are narrower and more uniform in width, and its soralia sit as neat discrete ellipses along the branch edges rather than as irregular granular patches on ridges.
Pseudevernia furfuracea shares the flattened, forking, dorsiventral habit and can look startlingly similar from above, but flip it over: the lower surface is dark brown to black, not white. Its upper surface typically carries isidia, tiny solid coral-like outgrowths that stay intact when rubbed, rather than powdery soredia. It also leans toward conifers and upland sites.
Evernia mesomorpha has branches that are less strongly flattened, more inflated and wrinkled, with far less contrast between the faces, and it is a northern, largely coniferous species.
Usnea species are the classic confusion for beginners, but they are round in section, greyish green all round with no pale underside, and they carry the tough central cord revealed by the pull test.
Hypogymnia physodes has hollow, inflated lobes that lie flat against the bark and split open at the tips; the surface is smooth and grey, not ridged.
Parmelia sulcata and the flavoparmelias are foliose, forming broad flat rosettes appressed to the bark with rhizines beneath, so they never form the free-standing bushy tuft.
A working field routine
Wet the specimen, then run this sequence: is it bushy and free-standing rather than flat; are the branches strap-shaped and repeatedly forked; is the upper surface grey-green and ridged; is the lower surface white and channelled; does a torn branch show cottony medulla without a central cord; and are there granular soralia along the margins.
