One of the most abundant woodland brittlegills, with a plain dull ochre-yellow cap, pale cream gills and a white stipe that greys distinctly with age and wet weather.
Overview
Ochre Brittlegill (Russula ochroleuca) is in many temperate woodlands the single most frequently encountered Russula, appearing in enormous numbers from late summer until the first hard frosts. It is also one of the least glamorous — a plain, medium-sized mushroom in a muted mustard-ochre — but that very plainness, combined with its long season and indifference to soil type, makes it a useful reference point for learning the genus.
The name means "pale yellow", and the cap colour sits between mustard, olive-ochre and dull straw, often with an olive cast in shade and a warmer honey tone in the open. Unlike most yellow brittlegills it shows no bright chrome or orange tones and no marked colour change in the flesh, so it is really identified by the absence of features as much as by their presence.
Within Russula it belongs among the medium-sized, moderately fragile species with a pale cream spore print. Its close relatives in the field are the smaller straw-coloured R. fellea and the bright yellow bog species R. claroflava, and learning to separate those three covers most of the common yellow brittlegills of northern woods.
How to identify it
Cap
4–10 cm across, convex then flat and finally shallowly depressed at the centre. The colour is a dull ochre-yellow to olive-yellow or mustard, sometimes greenish in shade, generally uniform though occasionally darker in the middle. The surface is smooth and slightly greasy in damp weather, drying matt. The margin is smooth at first, becoming faintly furrowed only in old specimens. The cuticle peels about halfway to the centre.
Gills
White when young, ageing to pale cream, moderately crowded, brittle, adnexed to nearly free, with occasional forking near the stipe. They discolour dull greyish where bruised or where slugs have grazed. Some short gills are interspersed toward the margin.
Stipe
4–9 cm tall, 1–2.5 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly swollen below, white at first but characteristically taking on a dirty grey or ash tone with age and in wet conditions — a helpful supporting feature. It is dry, finely wrinkled lengthwise, without ring or volva, and becomes chambered then hollow inside.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is white and does not change colour when cut, though it may grey slowly in very old specimens. The odour is faint and unremarkable. The spore print is pale cream to very pale ochre; spores are broadly ellipsoid with warts partly joined by connecting lines. Ferrous sulphate on the stipe flesh gives a pale salmon-pink reaction.
Where and when it grows
Ochre Brittlegill is a generalist, growing on the ground in almost every kind of woodland: oak, beech and birch stands, mixed woods, spruce and pine plantations, and even in scrubby thickets and parkland with scattered trees. It tolerates acid sands, clays and moderately calcareous soils, and is equally common in dense shade and along open rides.
It is abundant across Europe, and widespread in temperate Asia and North America. The fruiting season is unusually long: it starts in late summer, continues in force through autumn, and often produces the last brittlegills of the year, with fresh specimens found into early winter after mild spells when almost all other Russula species have finished.
Ecological role
This species is ectomycorrhizal and notably unfussy about its partner, forming sheathed root tips with birch, oak, beech, pine and spruce alike. This broad host tolerance explains both its abundance and its presence in disturbed and planted woodland where more specialised fungi are absent. Through the mycorrhizal interface it delivers soil water, phosphorus and nitrogen and takes photosynthetic sugars in return.
Its long fruiting season means it contributes spores to the woodland air later than most of its relatives, and its fruiting bodies are a substantial resource for invertebrates in late autumn — fungus gnat larvae, slugs and small mammals all work on them. As the soft fruiting bodies collapse, their nutrients are returned rapidly to the litter layer, while the mycelium overwinters intact on the root systems below.
Similar species
Russula claroflava is a brighter, purer chrome-yellow, grows in wet birch woods and Sphagnum, and its flesh greys and finally blackens when cut or bruised — R. ochroleuca shows no such change. Russula fellea is a paler, more uniform straw to honey colour in which the gills and stipe are the same tint as the cap, whereas R. ochroleuca always has a clearly white or grey stipe contrasting with the yellow cap; R. fellea also has a marked geranium-leaf odour.
Russula risigallina (R. lutea) is smaller and more delicate with a warm orange-yellow cap and a deep ochre-yellow spore print. Russula foetens can look ochre from a distance but is far larger and stouter, with a strongly grooved and warty cap margin, a sticky cap and a heavy oily smell. Cap tone, stipe colour, colour change and spore print shade separate all of these.
