Old Man of the Woods Identification Guide

How to recognise the shaggy black-scaled bolete on sight and then confirm it properly, using the reddening then blackening flesh, the woolly stipe and the near-black spore print that is unusual among boletes.

First impression, and the setting

It is late summer or early autumn, you are on an acid soil under oak or beech, probably on a bank or a path edge in old woodland, and something on the ground looks less like a mushroom than like a small pine cone that has been left out in the rain. It is shaggy, grey and black, coarse and rough, and it stands on a woolly stem of the same colour.

Almost nothing else in temperate woodland looks like this. Where most identification is a matter of accumulating small characters, the old man of the woods is recognised on impression and then confirmed. It is also, in most regions, uncommon: it tends to appear as scattered individuals or in twos and threes, often in the same spot year after year, rather than in troops.

Reading the cap

The cap is 5 to 15 cm across, occasionally larger, hemispherical at first and expanding to broadly convex or nearly flat.

The surface is the whole point. It is covered in coarse, thick, shaggy scales that are dark grey-brown to blackish, soft and felty rather than hard, and that stand up and curl outward in pyramidal or pointed tufts. Between the scales the underlying surface shows through as a paler whitish, pale grey or dingy cream ground, so the whole cap reads as a strong dark-on-pale mosaic. On very young caps the scales are pressed closer together and the effect is more like coarse wool than like a cone.

The margin is important too. It usually carries hanging remnants of the partial veil as ragged whitish to greyish flaps that overhang the pore surface, sometimes tearing away as the cap expands.

Reading the pore surface

Turn it over. The spore-bearing surface is poroid, which places the fungus among the boletes, but the colours are not the usual bolete colours.

Young pores are whitish to pale grey, ageing steadily through grey to dark grey and finally near black in old specimens. The pores themselves are large and angular, often 1 mm or more across, giving a coarse honeycomb appearance rather than the fine sponge of many boletes. The tube layer is fairly deep and can be pulled away from the cap flesh as a distinct layer.

Now bruise it deliberately. Press a fingertip firmly on the pore surface and watch. The response is typically a reddish or pinkish flush developing within a minute, which then darkens through brown to black over the following minutes. That two-stage change, red then black, is one of the most useful confirming characters in the whole species and it recurs in every tissue.

Reading the stipe, base and veil

The stipe is 6 to 15 cm tall and 1 to 3 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly thicker downward, and sometimes tapering into a short rooting point in the litter.

Its surface is shaggy and woolly, concolorous with the cap in greys and blackish browns, and often with a paler apex that shows fine ridges or a shallow reticulate net just below the pores. Around the middle or upper third there is usually a ragged, fibrous, ill-defined ring zone where the veil separated, though it is often reduced to a woolly girdle rather than a clean skirt.

Split the stipe lengthwise from top to bottom. It is solid and fibrous, whitish inside at first, and the cut face begins the same colour sequence as the pores: pinkish red first, then slowly grey-brown, then black. On a dry day the reddening can be faint and the darkening dominant, so cut a second fruitbody if the first is ambiguous.

Reading the flesh and the colour change

Cut a cap vertically through the centre and lay it flat.

Fresh flesh is whitish to pale grey, firm and fairly thick, softening in older specimens. Watch the exposed surface for five minutes. The classic sequence is a distinct reddish or salmon-pink flush appearing within thirty to ninety seconds, followed by a slow slide through wine-brown and grey to a sooty blackish tone. In cool or dry conditions the red stage is muted; in warm humid conditions it is vivid.

This is genuinely diagnostic in combination with the shaggy black cap. It also explains the blackened mummified appearance of old fruitbodies: the reaction has run to completion throughout the whole body.

Taking and reading a spore print

Do take a print, because it is unexpected and it settles the identification against several other dark boletes.

Cut the cap free, lay it pore surface down on white paper, cover it with a bowl and leave it several hours or overnight. Mature caps with grey rather than pale pores deposit heavily.

The print is very dark: blackish brown to almost black, sometimes with a faint purplish or violaceous cast in the mass. That is not what most boletes give, which is why it is worth recording. The great majority of bolete relatives print in olive-brown, snuff-brown or yellow-brown tones, so a near-black print from a poroid, fleshy, terrestrial mushroom is a powerful signal.

Under a microscope the spores are almost globose to broadly ellipsoid and heavily ornamented with a raised network of ridges, quite unlike the smooth spindle-shaped spores of most boletes. Even a modest lens at high power shows the reticulate sculpture.

Substrate, partners and season

This is an ectomycorrhizal species. It forms sheathing root associations with broadleaved trees, and in temperate Europe the usual partners are oak and beech, with hornbeam, chestnut and birch also recorded. It does not grow on wood, though it will often fruit close to a decaying stump because that is where the roots and humus are concentrated.

Soils are usually acid to neutral, often somewhat sandy or well drained, and it favours older, established woodland including banks, path sides and the edges of clearings where the litter is thin enough for a fruitbody to push through cleanly.

The season runs from midsummer through autumn, peaking in late summer in many years, and it responds to warm humid spells rather than to the cold late-autumn conditions that suit some other groups.

Separating it from close look-alikes

Other Strobilomyces species are the only real morphological confusion. Segregates recognised in various regions differ in having stiffer, more erect and sharply pointed scales that stand more distinctly apart, in the coarseness of the veil remnants, or in spore ornamentation, and separating them reliably needs microscopy plus knowledge of regional taxonomy. In much of temperate Europe you are dealing with a single common taxon.

Dark-capped Leccinum species have scabers, small dark tufts, on a white stipe ground, but their caps are smooth to finely felted rather than shaggy with upturned pyramidal scales, and their spore prints are brown to olive-brown rather than near black.

Tylopilus species have pinkish pore surfaces at maturity and smooth caps, and print in pink-brown tones.

Blackened old fruitbodies can be mistaken for burnt debris or for a hard black cushion fungus on the ground. Section one: the remains of a tube layer and the fleshy stipe interior are still recognisable.

Field checklist

Coarse shaggy blackish scales on a pale ground; woolly grey-black stipe with a ragged ring zone; large angular grey pores; flesh and pores reddening then blackening on cutting or bruising; near-black spore print; ectomycorrhizal with oak or beech on acid soil in late summer.
