Olive Shaggy Parasol Identification Guide

A step-by-step field routine for the drab olive-brown shaggy parasol of conifer litter, covering the low-contrast scaling, the reddening flesh, the double ring and the spore print work that separates the Chlorophyllum species from true parasols.

First impression, and the setting

You are in a spruce or pine plantation, or a mixed wood with a thick conifer needle carpet, most likely in autumn, and standing in the duff is a chunky pale mushroom the size of a fist with a scruffy, shredded-looking cap. From a distance it reads as grey-brown or drab olive rather than white, and the scales blend into the background instead of standing out.

That low contrast is the essence of this species. Where its close relative shows dark chocolate scales against a clean white ground, this one has scales and ground colour of similar drab olive-brown tones, so the cap looks uniformly dingy and softly tousled, like weathered felt.

Reading the cap

Young caps are ovoid to almost spherical, like a drumstick head, with the surface still unbroken. As the cap expands to convex and finally flat or shallowly domed, the outer skin tears into scales.

At full size the cap is 6 to 15 cm across, occasionally more. The centre keeps a smooth, unbroken, darker disc of intact cuticle, greyish brown to olive-brown, which is a useful anchor point. Away from that disc the surface breaks into coarse, flat to slightly upturned, felty scales arranged more or less concentrically, becoming smaller and more scattered toward the margin. Their colour is greyish brown with a definite olive or drab cast, and the flesh showing between them is dull whitish to pale buff rather than bright white.

Reading the gills

Turn the cap over. The gills are free, meaning they stop short of the stipe and leave a clear channel, and in mature specimens there is often a slight collar-like ridge where they terminate, so that the cap can be twisted off the stem cleanly.

They are crowded, broad, soft and white to cream when fresh. With age and handling they discolour toward dull reddish brown or dingy brown, especially along the edges and where slugs or fingers have been. That dulling is normal and does not indicate a different species.

Note that the gills stay pale. They never mature into the chocolate or blackish brown of a field mushroom, and they never take on the true green cast that is diagnostic elsewhere in the genus.

Reading the stipe, ring and base

Lift a whole fruitbody, base included, and clean it.

The stipe is 8 to 15 cm tall and 1 to 2 cm thick at the apex, expanding downward and finishing in a swollen, more or less rounded or club-shaped bulb up to 3 cm wide. That bulb is thickened but usually rounded off rather than sharply rimmed and flattened on top.

The surface is smooth to very finely fibrillose and essentially plain: whitish at first, becoming pale brown to dingy brownish, and browning noticeably where handled. Crucially, it is not patterned. There is no snakeskin, no zigzag banding, no girdling of dark scales.

The ring sits high on the stem, is thick, membranous and complex, and is usually described as double because the underside carries a second thickened brownish rim or flange beneath the white upper face. It is movable: with care you can slide it up and down the stem, which is a good character to demonstrate.

Slice the stipe lengthwise. It is fibrous and stuffed, often becoming hollow with a narrow canal in older specimens.

Reading the flesh and the colour change

This is the part worth doing carefully, because the colour reaction is a core character.

Cut the cap and the upper stipe with a clean blade, then lay the halves face up and watch for several minutes. In this species the exposed flesh is white and changes as you watch: first to a saffron, orange or amber tone, then over the next few minutes to a duller reddish brown, and finally settling toward a dingy brown. The change is usually clearest in the stipe, particularly toward the base, and in the cap flesh just above the gills.

The rate matters. A slow, staged saffron-then-red change fits this species and its immediate relative; an immediate strong red flush that appears almost as the knife passes points toward a different member of the group, and a flesh that barely changes at all points out of the genus altogether.

Taking and reading the spore print

Do not skip the print. It is the single most decisive observation in this group.

Cut the cap free at the top of the stipe, lay it gills down on white paper, cover it with a bowl and leave it four to eight hours or overnight. A mature, fully expanded cap gives a heavy deposit quickly.

Scrape the powder into a heap and read it in daylight. The olive shaggy parasol prints white to very pale cream. That is what you should see, and it is important because the genus contains a species that prints a distinct dull green or grey-green, and that green print is unmistakable once you have seen it heaped. Any hint of green in a thick print means you are not looking at this species.

Substrate, season and habit

The olive shaggy parasol is a saprotroph. It lives on decaying organic matter, not on tree roots and not on standing wood, and it fruits from a mycelium running through humus, needle litter and decayed woody debris.

Its strong preference is for coniferous woodland, especially spruce and pine plantations with a deep needle layer, and for mixed woods where conifer litter dominates. It also turns up in shelterbelts, along forestry tracks, on wood chip and mulch, and in the coniferous corners of large gardens and parks.

Fruiting is chiefly from late summer through autumn, with a peak after sustained rain. Because the mycelium spreads outward through the litter, fruitbodies frequently form arcs and rings, and a productive patch usually repeats in the same place in successive years.

Separating it from close look-alikes

Chlorophyllum rhacodes, the shaggy parasol proper, is the main confusion. Its scales are dark brown and strongly contrasting against a distinctly whitish ground, so the cap reads as bold dark-on-white rather than uniformly drab olive-brown. It also leans toward nutrient-rich, disturbed and often non-woodland sites such as hedgerows, gardens, compost heaps and nettle beds, whereas this species keeps to conifer litter.

Chlorophyllum brunneum has an abruptly flattened, sharply rimmed marginate bulb at the stipe base that looks as though it has been pressed onto a disc, a simpler ring with a single thickened brown edge, and generally stronger, faster reddening. Its habitat is even more strongly disturbed ground, gardens and compost.

Chlorophyllum molybdites is the species that prints dull green. It is also typically found in open grassland and lawns in warmer regions, with a paler cap and less shaggy scaling. Heap the print and look.

Macrolepiota procera, the parasol, is taller and more slender with a proportionally longer stem, its cap has a firm dark umbo, and above all its stipe is boldly patterned with a snakeskin of brown zigzag bands over a pale ground. Its flesh barely changes colour on cutting, and its ring is complex and movable.

Not as a root partner. It is a saprotroph living on decaying organic matter, so the trees matter only for the litter they drop.
