Leccinum versipelle

A tall, striking bolete with a bright orange felty cap, a white stipe studded with blackish scabers, and white flesh that turns pinkish-grey and then near-black when cut. It grows only with birch.
Overview
Orange Birch Bolete (Leccinum versipelle) is the most visually arresting of the scaber-stalks: a tall, upright mushroom carrying a domed cap of unmistakable fox-orange on a chalk-white stipe roughened with sooty black points. Standing among green birch moss it is visible from many metres away, which makes it one of the easiest boletes to spot in the field.
Like all Leccinum species it is defined by scabers, the tufted dark scales that roughen the stipe. Within the genus, it belongs to the group of orange- and red-capped species whose flesh undergoes dramatic colour changes when exposed to air, passing from white through wine-pink or lilac-grey to a deep slate-grey or blackish tone within minutes.
Host association is the practical key to the group. L. versipelle is a birch specialist, while the very similar orange-capped L. aurantiacum and L. albostipitatum belong to aspen and poplar. Knowing which tree is overhead resolves most identifications in the genus before any other character is examined.
How to identify it
Cap
6-25 cm across, hemispherical then broadly convex, dry with a finely felty or minutely downy surface. The colour is a bright orange, orange-ochre or foxy tawny-orange, sometimes fading to yellowish-tan in exposed or aged specimens. A distinctive feature is the sterile cap cuticle, which extends slightly beyond the tube layer as a narrow overhanging flap or rim around the margin.
Pores
The tube layer is grey-white to pale buff-grey, ageing dingier grey-ochre, with very small round pore mouths and a clear depression around the stipe apex. Bruising the pore surface produces a slow ochre to brownish discolouration rather than a blue one.
Stipe
8-25 cm tall and 2-4 cm thick, tall, firm and tapering upward from a thickened base. The ground colour is white to greyish-white, densely covered in coarse blackish or very dark grey scabers set in rough vertical rows; in young specimens the scabers may be greyish and darken markedly with age.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is white and firm. When cut it changes in stages: first to a pale wine-pink or lilac-grey, then over several minutes to dark grey and finally almost black, most strongly in the stipe. The extreme stipe base often shows a blue-green tint. The spore print is ochre-brown.
Where and when it grows
Leccinum versipelle is ectomycorrhizal with birch and follows the tree across its range. It is most abundant on damp, acidic ground: birch heathland, mossy birch woodland, boggy carr, the margins of mires, and northern birch scrub. It also appears reliably under planted birches in parkland and along roadside avenues, sometimes fruiting in mown grass well away from closed woodland.
Fruiting runs from midsummer through autumn, with the largest flushes after periods of steady rain. The species is common across northern and central Europe, particularly abundant in Scandinavia, Scotland and the Baltic region, and extends eastward through northern Asia. Closely related orange-capped scaber-stalks fill the same ecological role in North America.
Ecological role
The fungus builds ectomycorrhizal sheaths on birch root tips and threads hyphae through the surrounding peat, moss and litter, drawing nitrogen and phosphorus from substrates in which those nutrients are locked in slowly decomposing organic matter. In cold, wet northern habitats where mineral nutrients cycle slowly, this partnership is central to birch survival, and the fungus is correspondingly abundant in exactly those conditions.
The dramatic darkening of the cut flesh comes from the oxidation of pigments once cell contents meet the air, and its speed and end colour are consistent enough to serve as a genus-level field character. Fruiting bodies grow quickly, sometimes reaching full size in three or four days, and are exploited heavily by fly larvae, slugs and deer before collapsing back into the moss layer.
Similar species
Leccinum aurantiacum and L. albostipitatum have similarly orange to brick-red caps but partner with aspen and poplar rather than birch, and their scabers are reddish-brown or white respectively rather than blackish, at least when young. Birch Bolete (Leccinum scabrum) shares the host tree but has a dull grey-brown cap without an overhanging margin flap and flesh that barely changes colour when cut.
Leccinum variicolor, another birch associate, has a mottled dark grey-brown and whitish cap and a vivid blue-green stain in the stipe base. King Bolete (Boletus edulis) is separated at a glance by its stout swollen stipe with a fine raised white network in place of dark scabers, its white-to-olive tubes, and flesh that stays white when cut.
