A minute bonnet with a vivid orange to orange-red cap perched on a slender yellow stem, fruiting on wet twigs and fallen debris. Its size is measured in millimetres but its colour is unmistakable.
Overview
Mycena acicula is one of the brightest specks on the woodland floor: a fruit body rarely more than 8 mm across, coloured a startling orange to orange-red that stands out sharply against dark, wet leaf litter. The specific epithet means 'little needle', a reference to the extremely fine, needle-like stem.
It sits in the group of small, brightly pigmented bonnets, several of which have been moved between Mycena and segregate genera over the years. What separates M. acicula is the combination of an orange to scarlet-orange cap with a yellow to lemon-yellow stipe and pale yellowish gills with yellow edges — the whole fruit body is warm-toned, not just the cap.
Because it fruits from spring right through to autumn and favours consistently damp microhabitats, it is one of the more reliably encountered tiny fungi, even outside the main autumn season. Finding it usually means kneeling and searching wet twig piles at close range.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 2–8 mm across, hemispherical to convex, occasionally flattening a little with age, and never truly conical. The surface is finely pruinose at first, later smooth and translucent-striate almost to the centre when wet. Colour is bright orange to orange-red or scarlet, typically most intense at the disc and fading to yellow-orange or yellow at the margin.
Gills
Gills are adnate to narrowly adnexed, distant and few in number (often only 10–15 reaching the stem), and pale yellow to whitish-yellow. The gill edges are yellow, giving a subtly warmer line than the gill face.
Stipe
The stipe is 2–5 cm tall but often less than 0.5 mm thick — a hair-fine, hollow, flexible thread. It is bright lemon-yellow to pale yellow, minutely pruinose or downy when young and becoming smooth, with a small pad of fine white hairs at the point of attachment to the twig.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is vanishingly thin and yellowish, with no distinct smell. The spore print is white, from smooth ellipsoid amyloid spores; the cystidia are ornamented with finger-like projections typical of the group.
Where and when it grows
Orange Bonnet fruits on small fallen twigs, sticks, bark flakes, dead herbaceous stems and other fine woody debris lying in damp, shaded places. It particularly favours material that stays wet: the margins of ditches, springs and streams, the bases of damp banks, and the wetter hollows of both deciduous and mixed woodland.
It is not tied to a specific tree, appearing on debris from alder, willow, hazel, oak, beech and conifers alike. Fruiting can occur from April to November wherever conditions stay moist, with peaks in early summer and autumn. The species is widespread across Europe, temperate Asia and North America, and is frequently under-recorded simply because of its size.
Ecological role
This is a saprotroph of fine woody and herbaceous debris, decomposing the outer layers of twigs, bark fragments and dead stems in the litter layer. Its mycelium is confined to a small volume of substrate — often a single twig — so colonies are localised and fruit bodies typically appear in small numbers on one piece of wood rather than scattered widely.
The fungus depends on sustained humidity: the thin fruit bodies dry and collapse rapidly, so fruiting tracks rainfall closely and is most prolific in perpetually damp microsites. Spores released from the pale gills are dispersed by the still, moist air near the ground, which suits a species that fruits so close to its substrate.
Similar species
Mycena adonis (Scarlet Bonnet) is similar in size and brightness but has a pink to coral-scarlet cap on a whitish or pale, not yellow, stipe, and grows among moss and grass rather than on twigs. Mycena flavoalba is ivory to pale yellow throughout and lacks any orange tone.
Mycena aurantiomarginata is much larger, with a brownish-olive cap and vivid orange gill edges, and fruits in conifer needle litter. Tiny orange members of other genera, such as Rickenella fibula, are separated by their strongly decurrent gills running well down the stem and their habit of growing directly in moss carpets; M. acicula has adnate gills and a twig substrate.
