A tall ringless Amanita with a glowing apricot-orange cap, free white gills and a stem banded with orange-cream chevrons above a large white membranous sac.

Overview

Amanita crocea is the brightest of the European grisettes, a section Vaginatae species distinguished by its saffron to apricot cap colour and by the conspicuous fibrillose banding on its stem. Like all grisettes it has free gills, a white spore print, a strongly grooved cap margin, no ring, and a universal veil that survives as a membranous cup at the base.

The species is tall and rather graceful, often standing well above the surrounding litter on a slender stem. Its colour is warmer and more orange than the foxy brown of the tawny grisette, and in good light a fresh cap has an almost translucent apricot glow, particularly around the grooved margin where the flesh thins.

What clinches the identification is the stem. Where most grisettes have essentially smooth stems, Amanita crocea carries distinct concentric or chevron-shaped fibrillose bands in orange-cream and pale apricot running down its length, a texture sometimes described as woven or chevroned. Combined with the large white sac at the base, that banding separates it from all its close relatives.

How to identify it

Cap

5-12 cm across, ovoid then bell-shaped, expanding to broadly convex or flat with a low umbo. The colour is a warm apricot-orange to saffron or pale orange-brown, usually deepest over the centre and fading outward. The surface is smooth, thin-fleshed and slightly greasy when moist, and normally free of veil patches, though a large white membranous fragment sits on the disc in occasional specimens. The margin is deeply grooved.

Gills

Free from the stem, crowded, fairly broad, white to cream and sometimes taking on a faint orange tint near the cap flesh in age. Numerous short gills are interspersed, and the gill edges are finely floccose.

Stipe

8-18 cm tall and 1-2 cm thick, tapering upward, pale cream to whitish, and conspicuously decorated with concentric or chevron-like fibrillose bands and scales in orange-cream to pale apricot. There is no ring. The base is enclosed in a large, thick, white membranous sac-like volva with a free rim, which is often flushed with ochre or rusty tones on the inner surface.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white, brittle, and does not change colour when cut, sometimes tinged orange directly beneath the cap skin. The odour is mild. The spore print is white with globose spores.

Where and when it grows

The orange grisette grows on the ground in broadleaf and mixed woodland, most often associated with birch and beech and also occurring with oak, hornbeam and occasionally spruce. It is found on both acidic and calcareous soils, in mature woodland, wooded pasture and along shaded rides and banks, and shows some preference for moister, humus-rich ground.

It fruits from summer through autumn, typically appearing scattered or in small groups. The species is widespread through Europe, from the British Isles and Scandinavia south to the Alps and beyond, and is generally uncommon to locally frequent rather than abundant. Related orange-capped ringless Amanita species occur elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere.

Ecological role

This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, forming the usual Amanita partnership with tree roots: a fungal mantle around the fine root tips and a network between the outer root cells through which mineral nutrients and water pass to the tree and sugars pass back to the fungus. Birch and beech are its principal partners in most of its range.

Development follows the pattern typical of the section. The young fruit body is fully enclosed in a universal veil; as the stem elongates, the veil ruptures at the top, leaving the bulk of it as a thick persistent sac at the base while stray fibrils are drawn out along the stem to form the characteristic banding. Because no partial veil is produced, the gills are exposed early and no ring ever develops.

Similar species

Amanita fulva has a darker, foxy orange-brown cap, a nearly smooth stem without banding, and a volva stained rusty brown. Amanita vaginata is grey and equally plain-stemmed. Amanita ceciliae is bronze-brown, its cap carries ash-grey patches, and its base has crumbling grey bands rather than an intact white sac.

Amanita caesarea and Amanita jacksonii can share a broadly orange colour and a sac-like volva, but both have a conspicuous membranous ring on the stem and yellow to orange-yellow gills, whereas the orange grisette has no ring at all and white gills. Amanita muscaria in its orange forms has white warts scattered over the cap, white gills, a ring, and a bulbous base ringed with concentric scaly bands rather than a free-rimmed sac.

What separates the orange grisette from the tawny grisette?
Colour and stem texture. The orange grisette is a brighter apricot-orange and its stem carries obvious orange-cream fibrillose bands or chevrons; the tawny grisette is browner and its stem is nearly smooth, with a rust-stained volva.
Does it have a ring?
No. Like all grisettes it produces no partial veil, so the stem is bare apart from its fibrillose banding. Any orange Amanita with a genuine membranous ring belongs to a different group.
