Overview

The Orange Mock Oyster (Phyllotopsis nidulans) is among the most vividly coloured shelf fungi of the late season: a soft orange to apricot fan whose entire upper surface is clothed in dense matted wool, set above equally orange gills. Massed clusters on a dead log can be visible from many metres away against grey winter woodland.

Phyllotopsis is a small genus, placed in the Phyllotopsidaceae, of pleurotoid fungi with pinkish spore deposits and hairy cap surfaces. The epithet nidulans means "nesting", a reference to the way young fruitbodies sit in furry clusters like small nests in the crevices of bark. The species is notable for a strong and persistent odour that many find unmistakable in the field, though descriptions of it vary widely.

It is a saprotroph of dead wood on both conifers and hardwoods, and unlike many autumn fungi it continues to fruit into and through winter, often surviving repeated freezing. The colour fades to dull buff-orange in old, weathered specimens, but the woolly texture and pinkish spore print remain.

How to identify it

Cap

The fruitbody is 2–8 cm across, fan-, shell- or kidney-shaped, stalkless and attached broadly or by a narrowed lateral point. The upper surface is bright orange, apricot or orange-buff, fading to pale ochre with age, and is densely covered in soft matted woolly hairs that give a felted, almost fur-like appearance. The margin is inrolled when young, often remaining slightly downturned, and can be lobed or wavy.

Gills

Gills are deep orange to orange-yellow, narrow, crowded and radiating from the attachment point. They are typically a slightly stronger, warmer orange than the cap and hold their colour longer as the cap fades. Edges are even, and cross-veining is minimal.

Stipe

Absent. The fruitbody attaches directly to the wood by a narrowed base, which is usually clothed in the same orange wool as the cap.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is thin, soft and pale orange to buff, unchanging when cut. Fruitbodies emit a strong, distinctive and persistent odour that is often the first clue to the species before it is seen. The spore print is pinkish to pinkish buff — a key separator from the white-spored oysters — and spores are small, smooth, cylindrical to allantoid.

Where and when it grows

Phyllotopsis nidulans fruits on dead wood of both conifers and broadleaves, appearing on fallen logs, stumps, standing dead trunks and large branches. Conifers such as pine, spruce and fir are frequent hosts, but birch, beech, oak, aspen and other hardwoods are also used. Fruitbodies typically arise in overlapping tiers and dense clusters along the flanks of a log, often emerging from bark crevices.

The season is late, running from autumn into winter and sometimes persisting to early spring in mild regions; the species tolerates frost and can continue fruiting during cold spells. It occurs widely across the north temperate zone in Europe, northern Asia and North America, and is generally scattered but locally abundant where dead conifer wood accumulates.

Ecological role

This is a saprotrophic wood-decay fungus causing a white rot, degrading lignin along with cellulose in dead logs and stumps. It usually colonises wood in the earlier and middle stages of decay, where bark is still partly attached, and its mycelium can occupy a whole log and fruit repeatedly across several winters.

Its strong odour and vivid orange colouring are unusual for a wood-rotting agaric, and both may relate to interactions with insects — the odour is highly attractive to certain flies, which visit the fruitbodies and may assist in dispersing spores. The late fruiting season places it in a period of low competition, and its dense woolly covering probably helps the thin flesh retain moisture and resist frost damage on exposed log surfaces.

Similar species

Pleurotus ostreatus and other true oysters are grey to tan with a smooth bald cap, white gills and a white spore print, so both texture and spore colour separate them immediately. Sarcomyxa serotina has warm yellow-orange gills that invite confusion, but its cap is olive-green and tacky-gelatinous rather than orange and woolly, and it has a short scurfy lateral stipe.

Crepidotus species are stalkless fans on wood but are white to buff, smooth or only finely hairy, and drop brown spores. Bright orange Pycnoporus or Trametes brackets can look similar at a distance but have a pored underside rather than gills, and much tougher flesh. Young Hypholoma or Gymnopilus clusters share orange tones but have true central stipes and dark purple-brown or rusty spore prints respectively.
