Orange Mycena Identification Guide
How to recognise Mycena leaiana, the clustered orange bonnet of hardwood logs, with its viscid cap, vivid orange gill edges and staining pigment. Includes a morphology-only walk through its closest orange look-alikes.
First Impressions
Orange Mycena does not behave like most of its genus. Instead of scattered solitary caps on litter, you find a tight bouquet of twenty or fifty glossy orange caps erupting from a single point on a hardwood log, usually in humid summer woodland shortly after rain. The orange is intense and wet-looking, and against dark decaying wood it reads from several metres away.
The supporting picture is a well-decayed but still firm log or large fallen limb of beech, birch, maple, elm or oak, in shaded eastern North American forest. If you crouch and touch a cap, your fingertip comes away tinted orange. That staining is the first hint that you are on the right track.
Reading the Cap
Caps are one to four centimetres, occasionally five, conic to bell-shaped when young and expanding to convex or broadly humped. Colour is bright orange to reddish-orange over the disc, grading to orange-yellow toward the margin, and dulling to orange-tan in weathered specimens.
The surface texture matters. Fresh caps are distinctly viscid, tacky to genuinely slimy in wet weather, and dry to a smooth shine afterwards. The margin is thin and translucent-striate when moist, so you can see the gill lines through it. Old caps become slightly wrinkled and may split radially at the rim.
The Gills, and the Character That Settles It
Gills are adnate to adnexed, often with a small decurrent tooth running onto the stalk, and they are close rather than crowded. The gill faces are pale yellowish-cream to pale orange, which by itself is unexciting. The edges are the point: they are a vivid orange to orange-red, forming a fine bright line along the whole margin of every gill.
Hold a cap up so light rakes across the gills, or lay a single gill on a white card under a lens. The coloured edge is unmistakable and it persists even in faded, rain-battered caps where the cap colour has drained away. If you own a microscope, a squash mount explains it: the gill-edge cystidia are packed with orange pigment, and you can watch the colour concentrate in those cells.
Stipe, Base and Cluster Habit
The stalk is three to seven centimetres tall and two to five millimetres thick, equal, hollow, and noticeably tougher and more pliant than the average Mycena stalk. It is orange to orange-yellow, tacky when fresh, and smooth over most of its length.
At the base it changes character: coarse, stiff orange to whitish-orange hairs form a dense strigose mat that binds the whole cluster together and grips the wood. Caps arise caespitose from that common base, several dozen at a time. This combination of clustered growth from a hairy orange base on hardwood is very distinctive within the genus.
Flesh and Colour Transfer
Slice a cap. The flesh is thin, pale orange, and watery. There is no true latex and no bruising reaction in the sense of a chemical colour change. What you do get is pigment transfer: the orange colouring runs freely and will stain your fingers, notebook, collecting box and anything else in it. Practical advice is to bag this species separately, because it will tint the caps of pale companions in the same container and leave you puzzling over a mystery orange stain on a Russula an hour later.
Smell is faint and unhelpful.
Taking a Spore Print
Because the caps grow in a mass, twist one clear rather than trying to cut it in place. Trim the stalk close under the gills, set the cap on black card, cover with a cup and leave it three to six hours. The print is white to very faintly cream.
Spores are ellipsoid, roughly seven to ten by five to six micrometres, smooth, and amyloid, greying-blue in Melzer's iodine. The amyloid reaction confirms the genus. Cheilocystidia on the gill edge are abundant, club-shaped to irregular, and full of the orange pigment already described.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Orange Mycena is a saprotroph on dead hardwood. It favours logs, stumps and large fallen limbs that are past the first stages of decay but still solid enough to hold together, and it usually fruits on the upper and side surfaces where rainwater collects. Beech, birch, maple and elm are the classic hosts. It does not appear on conifers, and it does not fruit from soil or from small twiggy litter.
Season is early summer to early autumn, peaking in warm humid weather after thunderstorms. Its distribution centres on eastern North America, with related orange-gilled species occupying similar niches elsewhere.
Separating the Look-Alikes
Mycena strobilinoides is bright orange with orange gill edges and orange basal fibrils, so it sounds identical. Separate it on habit and substrate: it grows scattered or in small groups on conifer needle duff, not in dense clusters on hardwood logs, and its cap is dry rather than viscid.
Mycena aurantiomarginata also has vivid orange gill edges but its cap is olive-brown to grey-brown with only an orange tinge, and it lives in conifer litter, mainly in Europe.
Cyptotrama asprata shares the bright orange cap and hardwood logs but is covered in coarse granular or spiky scurf rather than being viscid and smooth, and its gills are white with no coloured edge.
Xeromphalina campanella and X. kauffmanii grow in dense mats on rotting wood but are much smaller, with decurrent yellowish gills and a wiry dark rusty stalk.
Velvet Shank (Flammulina velutipes) clusters on hardwood but has an orange-brown cap, a dark velvety stalk base rather than an orange strigose one, no coloured gill edge, and fruits in cold months.
Waxcaps (Hygrocybe species) can be equally orange but have thick waxy gills, grow from soil in grassland or mossy woodland, and never cluster on wood.
Gymnopus and Marasmius species on wood have dry, tough stalks and lack both the viscid cap and the coloured gill edge.
A compact working test: dense cluster on hardwood, viscid orange cap, orange gill edges, hairy orange stalk base, white amyloid spores. Nothing else assembles that set.
