Orange Peel Fungus

Aleuria aurantia

Brilliant orange, thin and brittle cups that flatten, split and contort until they look exactly like scattered pieces of orange peel. It fruits in troops on bare compacted soil, track sides and gravelly ground.

Overview

Few fungi are named so aptly. Aleuria aurantia produces thin, brittle, bright orange discs which begin as neat little cups but quickly expand, flatten, split at the margins and buckle into irregular wavy shapes, until a group of them on a path edge genuinely resembles a handful of discarded orange peel.

It is an operculate ascomycete in the family Pyronemataceae, a large group of mostly small cup fungi that specialise in bare, disturbed and mineral soils. The fertile hymenium lines the upper, concave face of the disc, and the vivid colour is produced by carotenoid pigments similar to those that colour carrots.

As a colonist of compacted, disturbed ground it is one of the classic fungi of tracks, verges, roadworks and newly landscaped areas, and it is often the most conspicuous fungus in such places in autumn.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

Begins as a small rounded cup 1-2 cm across, then expands to a shallow saucer or an almost flat, wavy disc 2-10 cm wide. With age the margin splits, the disc curls and contorts irregularly, and neighbouring fruiting bodies press against one another and become lobed and distorted. There is essentially no stalk - the disc is attached centrally or slightly off-centre directly to the soil.

Inner surface

The fertile upper face is smooth, waxy-looking and a brilliant, deep orange to orange-red, evenly coloured and slightly glossy when moist.

Outer surface

Paler - whitish to pale orange - and finely downy or granular with a faint bloom of short hairs, though far less obviously felty than in the Scarlet Elf Cup. The contrast between faces is present but subtle.

Flesh and spore print

Very thin, brittle and easily torn, whitish to pale orange, snapping rather than tearing cleanly. Spore print white. Spores are elliptical with a coarse net-like reticulate surface ornamentation and a small pointed apiculus at each end, distinctive under the microscope.

Habit

Typically gregarious, in scattered troops or dense overlapping clusters of many fruiting bodies over a small area of bare ground.

Where and when it grows

The Orange Peel Fungus is a specialist of bare, compacted, disturbed mineral soil. Typical sites include woodland path edges, forest tracks, gravel drives, roadside verges, quarry floors, landscaped banks, building spoil, lawns with thin turf, and the sides of newly cut ditches. It generally avoids deep leaf litter and dense vegetation, preferring open ground where the soil surface is exposed and slightly compressed.

It is often found in woodland and parkland settings but is not tied to particular trees. Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn and sometimes into early winter, frequently reappearing in the same disturbed patch for several successive years until vegetation closes over. The species is common and widespread across temperate Europe, North America and Asia.

Ecological role

Aleuria aurantia is saprotrophic, decomposing organic matter within disturbed mineral soils. It belongs to a functional group sometimes called pioneer or disturbance fungi, which colonise freshly exposed ground quickly and process the fine organic material mixed into it. Its abundance on tracks and roadworks reflects a genuine preference for compaction and exposure rather than mere visibility.

Because it fruits on open ground with no canopy immediately above, its spore discharge is well placed to catch air movement. The asci lining the upper face shoot spores upward, and mature colonies can release visible puffs when disturbed. The reticulate spore ornamentation may assist in adhesion to soil particles and passing animals. Populations tend to be transient at any one site: as grasses and mosses colonise the bare soil, the fungus disappears and reappears wherever fresh disturbance occurs.

Similar species

The Scarlet Elf Cup (Sarcoscypha austriaca) is deeper scarlet-red rather than orange, has a distinct short stalk, is thicker and more rubbery, keeps a neat cup shape, has a conspicuously white felty exterior, and grows on damp mossy hardwood sticks in winter rather than on bare soil in autumn.

The Common Eyelash (Scutellinia scutellata) is far smaller, up to about 1 cm, flatter, and rimmed with long stiff black marginal hairs visible with a hand lens; it grows on damp rotting wood and wet soil. Melastiza chateri is a small orange cup with fine short brown marginal hairs and stays neatly disc-shaped. Otidea species, the ear cups, are ochre to tan and split down one side into an ear or rabbit-ear shape rather than forming a flat disc, and grow in woodland litter. Slime moulds and orange jelly fungi may share the colour, but they are gelatinous and lack the thin brittle disc structure.

Why does it look like actual orange peel?
The discs are very thin and brittle, and as they expand the margins split and the whole fruiting body buckles and contorts. Crowded groups press against each other, producing the irregular curled fragments that mimic discarded peel.

Does it have a stalk?

Will it come back in the same place?
Often for a few years, as long as the ground stays open and disturbed. Once grasses and mosses close over the bare soil the fungus typically disappears from that spot.
