Orange Pinwheel Identification Guide
A close field read of Marasmius siccus, the tiny orange parachute of summer leaf litter, covering its pleated cap, distant white gills, wiry black stalk and insititious base. Includes separation from Marasmius rotula and the other pinwheels on morphology alone.
The Scene
Walk a humid deciduous woodland in midsummer, a day or two after warm rain, and look down at the leaf mat rather than ahead. Orange Pinwheel appears as dozens of tiny orange parachutes hovering two to five centimetres above the litter, each one apparently unsupported until you notice the hair-fine black wire holding it up. The effect is unmistakable once seen and the population is usually large, since the fungus colonises whole leaf drifts at a time.
The caps look pleated, like miniature folded umbrellas, and the colour is a warm rusty orange that reads clearly against brown leaves. Everything about this species rewards a lens, but unlike some tiny fungi, it can be taken to genus with the naked eye.
Reading the Cap
Caps are five to twenty millimetres, hemispherical to bell-shaped when young, expanding to convex with a flat or slightly sunken disc. The colour is rusty orange to tawny-orange or orange-brown, deepest over the centre and paler toward the rim; some collections are almost apricot, others distinctly rusty.
The surface is dry, dull and minutely velvety, never sticky or shining. What defines it is the pleating: deep, regular radial grooves run from the margin almost to the disc, so the cap is corrugated like a fan or a paper parasol. These are true sulcations reflecting the gill positions, not the fine translucent striations of a Mycena, and they are visible in dried material.
The cap tissue is tough and pliant. Squeeze it and it flexes rather than crumbling, which is a genus-level property worth confirming by hand.
Gills, Stipe and Base
Gills are white to pale cream, and against the orange cap that contrast is a key field mark. They are broad and conspicuously distant, with typically only thirteen to nineteen full gills reaching the stalk, sometimes with a few short intermediates. Attachment is to the stem itself, adnexed to adnate. There is no free ring or collar of tissue encircling the stalk, and that absence is what separates this species from several relatives.
The stalk is twenty to seventy millimetres long and less than a millimetre thick, so it looks like a horsehair. It is smooth, shining, wiry and elastic, blackish to dark reddish-brown over most of its length but abruptly pale whitish-yellow at the apex, just under the gills. That two-tone stalk is a strong supporting character. It is hollow but tough, and it can be bent almost double without snapping.
The base is where you should look hardest. The stalk is inserted directly into the leaf, petiole or twig with no basal disc, no pad of mycelium and no hairs. This condition, described as insititious, is one of the most useful single characters in litter mycology. Lift a fruitbody off the leaf and inspect the point of attachment under a lens: a clean pinhole insertion means Marasmius and its allies, while a fuzzy white pad or a tuft of hairs points to Mycena, Gymnopus or Marasmiellus.
Flesh, Colour Change and Reviving
The flesh is negligible, whitish, and tough for its thickness. It does not change colour when cut, produces no latex, and has no distinctive smell. Nothing bruises.
The most striking property is revival. Let a collection dry on a windowsill until the caps are shrivelled brown crisps, then wet them, and within an hour they resume their shape, colour and pleating and can go back to producing spores. This drought tolerance is the whole strategy of the genus and it explains why Orange Pinwheel can fruit in an exposed leaf drift that dries out between showers.
Taking a Spore Print
Small caps mean pooling. Take six to ten mature fruitbodies, trim the wiry stalks close, and lay the caps gill-side-down on black card in a covered box with a damp tissue overnight. The deposit is white.
The microscopy is genuinely rewarding here. Spores are long and narrow, roughly sixteen to twenty-one by three to four and a half micrometres, club-shaped to slightly spindle-shaped, curved, smooth and inamyloid. That elongated shape is unusual and helps confirm the section. The cap cuticle is built of broom cells: swollen cells crowned with a dense cluster of short blunt projections. The coarse, thick-walled version of these cells defines the section Sicci to which this species belongs.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Orange Pinwheel is a litter decomposer, and specifically a colonist of fallen broadleaf leaves, petioles and small twigs. Oak, maple, beech and hickory litter are all productive. It works alongside a whole guild of small saprotrophs that bind, perforate and eventually reduce the leaf layer into humus, and the effect of that guild is visible if you lift a colonised leaf and find it skeletonised and bound by fine white mycelial threads.
Fruiting runs from midsummer to early autumn, keyed tightly to warm rain, and populations can appear and vanish within a week. The species is abundant in eastern North America, with close relatives filling similar roles worldwide.
Separating the Look-Alikes
Marasmius fulvoferrugineus is the hardest. It has the same parachute shape, wiry dark stalk and distant white gills, but the cap is a darker rusty red-brown to fulvous and often slightly larger. Colour overlaps in worn material, and reliable separation frequently comes down to microscopy and to recording exact fresh cap colour in the field.
Marasmius pulcherripes has a pinkish to rose-brown cap that is more sharply conical with a small central point.
Collared Parachute (Marasmius rotula) has a whitish to greyish pleated cap and, decisively, gills that are not attached to the stalk at all but to a free collar of tissue encircling it. Look at that junction under a lens and the difference is absolute. It also grows on sticks and woody debris more than on leaves.
Marasmius capillaris has a pale grey-white pleated cap on an even finer stalk and grows characteristically on oak leaves.
Marasmius delectans and M. cohaerens are larger, with paler caps and differently coloured stalks, and often have some basal mycelium.
Mycena and Atheniella species may be similar in size and colour but have fragile stalks that snap cleanly, caps that are translucent-striate rather than deeply pleated, more crowded gills, and a small pad of mycelium at the base.
Gymnopus and Marasmiellus species are fleshier, with crowded gills and hairy or padded stalk bases.
Working order: pleated dry orange cap, distant white gills attached to the stem rather than a collar, wiry two-tone stalk, and a clean insititious base in a dead leaf.
