A corky ground-dwelling toothed fungus with a white growing rim, a rusty orange body and a stout felted stalk. Cut vertically it shows uniformly orange-brown zoned flesh.

Overview

Orange Tooth is a robust Hydnellum, one of the stipitate hydnoid fungi that combine a mushroom-like silhouette with the toughness of a piece of cork. The cap is typically uneven, knobbly and irregular rather than neatly circular, and its bright white growing margin contrasts sharply with the rust-orange of the maturing centre, making fresh specimens easy to spot against dark conifer litter.

The genus belongs to the Thelephorales and produces brown, coarsely warted spores across a fertile surface of downward-pointing spines. What separates Hydnellum from fleshier toothed genera is its perennial-looking, corky, concentrically zoned flesh, which does not rot away quickly but dries in place and blackens.

In H. aurantiacum the orange pigment saturates both the surface and the interior, so cutting a fruiting body in half reveals an evenly orange-brown, faintly banded section without the contrasting blue or red tones that define several of its relatives.

How to identify it

Cap

Commonly 4-12 cm across, thick, irregular and often lumpy, pitted or furrowed, with adjacent caps sometimes fusing. The actively growing margin is white to cream and felted, while the older central region turns orange, rust-orange and finally dark brown. The surface is velvety at first and becomes matted and roughened with age.

Spines

Crowded, decurrent spines 2-6 mm long clothe the underside and run onto the top of the stalk. They start white to cream, pass through pale orange and darken to brown as the spores mature.

Stipe

Short and stout, 2-6 cm tall, often swollen or bulbous below and tapering irregularly, coloured orange-brown to rust-brown, densely felted, and normally matted with moss, needles and soil at the base.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is tough and corky, orange to orange-brown throughout and faintly zoned in vertical section, with no blue tints anywhere and no red exudate. The spore print is brown, and the spores are irregularly rounded with coarse warts.

Where and when it grows

This is a fungus of coniferous woodland, growing on the ground among moss and needle litter on sandy, acidic and nutrient-poor soils. Spruce and pine stands, including older plantations on heathland substrates, are its usual setting, and it often appears in small troops or clusters where neighbouring fruiting bodies partly fuse.

Fruiting takes place from late summer into autumn, with the tough remains persisting through winter as dark weathered shapes on the forest floor. The species is distributed across northern and montane Europe, boreal Asia and northern North America, and is more common in the north of its range. As with other stipitate hydnoids, it is regarded across much of Europe as a species of conservation interest because of habitat loss and soil enrichment.

Ecological role

Hydnellum aurantiacum forms ectomycorrhizal associations with conifers, principally spruce and pine. Its hyphae wrap the fine roots and radiate outward into the soil, extracting phosphorus, nitrogen and water from a much larger volume than the roots alone could reach, and receiving sugars from the tree in return. The partnership is central to conifer performance on the thin sandy soils where this fungus is found.

The underground mycelium is long-lived and expands only slowly, so fruiting bodies reappear in the same spots over many seasons. As the fruiting body enlarges it grows around litter and moss, which become embedded in its tissue. Sensitivity to nitrogen deposition and physical soil disturbance makes the species a useful marker of forest soils that have remained undisturbed for decades.

Similar species

Blue Tooth (Hydnellum caeruleum) is the most confusable relative, since old specimens are similarly orange-brown, but its fresh margin is bluish and a vertical cut shows blue cap flesh over an orange stalk base rather than uniform orange throughout. Hydnellum auratile is smaller and thinner with a brighter, more uniformly orange cap and a slimmer stalk. Hydnellum ferrugineum has whitish to pinkish young caps that exude red droplets and pinkish-brown rather than orange flesh.

Shingled Hedgehog (Sarcodon imbricatus) shares the brown spore print but is far larger, covered in coarse upturned brown scales, and has thick fleshy rather than corky tissue. Phellodon species have similar tough zoned caps but drop a white spore print and have thin, duplex, leathery flesh.
