Ornate-stalked Bolete Identification Guide
How to recognise Retiboletus ornatipes by its boldly netted chrome-yellow stalk, dull grey cap and yellow pores, and how to tell it from its grey-capped cousin and other yellow-stalked boletes.
First Impressions and the Setting
You find this bolete on a warm, humid day in an eastern hardwood forest, most often on a slope or bank under oak, and frequently on the mossy shoulder of a woodland trail where the soil is thin. From two paces away it reads as an unremarkable dull grey mushroom, the sort you would walk past. Then you tilt it and the stalk stops you: a bright chrome to mustard yellow column covered from top to bottom in a raised, coarse net, as though someone had pressed a lattice into wax. That contrast - drab grey cap over a boldly netted yellow stalk - is the whole species in one glance, and it is why the name emphasises the stalk rather than the cap.
Reading the Cap
The cap runs roughly 4-15 cm across, convex when young and flattening with age, occasionally becoming slightly uneven or shallowly depressed in old specimens. The surface is dry and dull, never sticky, and under a lens it is minutely felted or finely velvety; older caps can crack shallowly in dry weather. Colour is the tricky part, because it drifts through a range rather than sitting on one shade: young caps are grey to olive-grey or grey-brown, and as the mushroom matures the whole surface warms towards yellow-grey, olive-yellow or dingy brownish-yellow. Handled areas and old caps often bruise to a dull ochre-brown. Do not try to identify this species on cap colour alone; treat the cap as a supporting character only.
The Pore Surface
Turn it over. The tubes are bright lemon to chrome yellow when young, deepening to mustard and eventually dull olive-yellow or brownish-yellow with age. Pores are small and roughly circular, and the tube layer is usually adnate to slightly depressed around the stalk rather than deeply decurrent. Press a thumb firmly into the pores and wait: the bruise develops slowly as a brown to orange-brown or rusty stain. There is no blue. If the pore surface flushes blue or blue-green within seconds, you are looking at something else entirely.
The Stalk - the Decisive Feature
Spend most of your time here. The stalk is 5-15 cm long, usually rather slender in proportion to the cap, often tapering upward or slightly swollen near the middle, and it is solid. Its ground colour is a strong yellow: bright golden yellow in fresh specimens, dulling to mustard or brownish-yellow with age or handling. Over that yellow runs a conspicuous, coarse, raised network of ridges - a reticulum - and the key point is that the net covers essentially the entire length, not just the top third. Run a fingertip along it; you can feel the ridges. Where you grip it, the yellow discolours to brownish or rusty within a minute or two, so a specimen carried in the hand ends up with dark finger marks. There is no ring and no veil.
Flesh and Colour Change
Split the mushroom in half from cap to base. The flesh is pale yellow to chrome yellow throughout, usually strongest in the stalk, and it is firm rather than soft. On exposure the cut faces darken slowly to brownish or dull ochre; again, no blue develops. Check the very base of the stalk for the same yellow tone and for a slow brown staining response. The combination of yellow flesh, yellow pores, brown staining and total absence of blueing is a tight package.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the stalk off flush with the tubes, set the cap pore-side down on white paper, cover it with a cup or bowl to keep air still, and leave it four to eight hours; boletes usually deposit generously overnight. The print is olive-brown to brown - a warm, slightly olive-toned brown that is quite different from the pale yellow of a chanterelle print or the white of a russula. Under a microscope the spores are smooth, narrow and spindle-shaped, roughly 9-13 by 3-4 micrometres, which is a typical bolete profile and confirms that the pore layer is a genuine tube layer rather than a folded surface.
Substrate, Season and Associates
This is an ectomycorrhizal species of eastern North American hardwood forests, most reliably associated with oaks and also reported with beech and other broadleaf trees. It fruits from soil, scattered to gregarious, sometimes in loose troops along old woods roads and shaded banks, and it favours summer into early autumn after warm rain. It is a soil mushroom: if your specimen grew from wood, from a stump or from wood chips, reconsider the identification.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology Alone
- Retiboletus griseus is the nearest relative and the most common confusion. Its cap is grey to grey-brown like a young Ornate-stalked Bolete, but the pore surface is whitish to pale grey, ageing dingy, rather than bright yellow, and the stalk is whitish to grey with a grey to blackish net. Where the two are side by side, the yellow versus white pore surface separates them instantly.
- Hemileccinum subglabripes has a yellow stalk and yellow pores, but the stalk is finely punctate or minutely scurfy rather than netted, and the cap is a warm reddish-brown to tawny rather than grey.
- Boletus and Butyriboletus species with netted stalks generally combine the net with a distinctly coloured cap and, very often, an immediate blue staining reaction in flesh or pores. Ornate-stalked Bolete never blues.
- Aureoboletus and Xanthoconium species may show yellow pores but lack a coarse full-length reticulum, and several have viscid caps.
- Suillus species with yellow pores have glutinous or scaly caps, glandular dots rather than a net, and often a ring; the pores are usually larger and radially arranged.
- Retiboletus fuscus and related grey-brown taxa run darker in cap and stalk and lack the saturated chrome-yellow tone throughout.
