First Impressions and the Setting
Oyster Rollrim turns up in places most mushrooms ignore: on sawn conifer lumber, stacked timber, sawdust piles, mine props, decking, the joists in a damp cellar, and on buried conifer wood at the edge of a plantation. The typical find is a cluster of stalkless, fan-shaped brackets sprouting sideways from a cut end or a plank face, each one a warm ochre to yellow-brown, with a strongly inrolled edge and a slightly shaggy look where it grips the wood. Because it grows on worked timber as readily as on natural deadwood, plenty of records come from woodsheds and construction sites rather than from woodland. The overall gestalt is oyster-like, hence the name, but the colours are warmer and dingier than a true oyster and the gills are the giveaway.
Reading the Cap
Individual caps are 3-12 cm across, fan-shaped, shell-shaped or spatula-shaped, sometimes almost kidney-shaped, and they overlap in tiers. The surface is dry and matte, and if you look closely, especially towards the point of attachment, it is finely felted, downy or minutely hairy rather than bald. Colour runs from pale ochre-yellow through buff, tan and yellow-brown to olive-brown, often with a paler margin. The edge is thick and rolled inwards when young - the rollrim of the name - and it stays at least somewhat incurved into maturity while becoming wavy, lobed and irregularly notched. Older caps flatten and can look faded and washed out.
The Gills
This is the character that settles the identification. The gills are crowded, narrow, and unmistakably decurrent, radiating from the attachment point and running right down to it. Their colour is a warm yellow-ochre to orange-buff or olive-buff, brighter than the cap and quite unlike the white or cream gills of an oyster. Under a lens they are visibly irregular: repeatedly forked, cross-veined and anastomosing near the base, often wrinkled, crimped or vein-like rather than knife-clean. Now do the peel test. Slide a thumbnail under the gills at the margin and lift: in Tapinella the gill layer separates from the cap flesh cleanly, coming away as a sheet. That separability, combined with the forking ochre-yellow gills, is close to conclusive in the field.
Attachment, Base and Mycelium
There is normally no stalk at all. The cap attaches broadly and directly to the substrate, occasionally narrowing into a stub-like rudimentary lateral base, which is downy or woolly. Scrape the wood around the attachment: colonised timber often carries a felt of mycelium, and in this species the mycelium and the extreme base can show a lilac or violet tinge, especially in cellar and sawdust collections. That violet mycelial hint, when present, is a useful and easily overlooked confirmation.
Flesh and Colour Change
Cut a cap through vertically. The flesh is soft, spongy and rather thin, pale yellowish to buff, thickest at the attachment and tapering to the margin. It bruises weakly, darkening to dull brownish over some minutes in places you press hard, but there is no sharp instantaneous reaction and no latex. It tears in a soft, slightly cottony way rather than snapping.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut a mature cap free and lay it gill-side down on white paper, cover with a bowl and leave several hours. The print is pale yellow-brown - variously described as yellowish, sordid yellow-brown or ochraceous - and it is the single measurement that separates this species from the white-spored oysters at a stroke. In a crowded tiered cluster you can often see the effect without a print at all: the upper surfaces of the lower caps are lightly dusted a dull yellowish-brown. Microscopically the spores are smooth, elliptical and pale yellow-brown, which matches the deposit.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Oyster Rollrim is a brown-rot decomposer that specialises in conifer wood. It fruits from dead conifer logs and stumps, from sawdust and wood-chip piles, and characteristically from processed and structural timber in damp conditions, which is why it is so often recorded indoors and around timber yards. It is not mycorrhizal and has no tree partner; it needs only wet, decaying softwood. Fruiting runs from summer through late autumn outdoors and can occur at almost any time of year in heated or sheltered indoor situations, which is another practical clue - an ochre fan with yellow gills growing on a cellar joist in midwinter is far more likely to be this than an oyster.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology Alone
- Pleurotus ostreatus and relatives: white to cream gills that do not peel away as a sheet, a smooth bald cap, a white to faintly lilac spore print, and a preference for broadleaf wood. The white gills alone usually settle it.
- Tapinella atrotomentosa: much larger and thicker, with a dark brown cap and, decisively, a stout lateral stalk covered in dense blackish-brown velvet. Oyster Rollrim has no such stalk.
- Paxillus involutus: grows on soil with a central stalk and a brown cap, with gills that bruise reddish-brown promptly. The habit alone separates them.
- Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca: bright orange, with a proper central stalk and repeatedly forked orange gills, growing on the ground or on very rotten wood rather than as a bracket.
- Phyllotopsis nidulans: bright orange to salmon-orange throughout, densely and coarsely hairy cap, orange gills, and a strong disagreeable smell.
- Crepidotus species: much smaller, thinner, whitish caps with brown gills at maturity and a distinctly brown spore print, usually on broadleaf twigs.
- Sarcomyxa serotina: viscid, olive-green tinted cap and a short scurfy lateral stalk, with pale yellowish gills that do not fork and vein in the same congested way.
