Overview

Psathyrella candolleana is the most frequently encountered member of a very large genus of fragile, dark-spored agarics. Psathyrella species are characterised by thin, brittle, watery flesh, a hollow snapping stem, and a hygrophanous cap that changes colour dramatically as it loses water, drying from the centre outward. The genus is placed in the Psathyrellaceae, the family that also contains the inky caps.

This species stands out within a difficult genus because it is comparatively large, pale, and grows in conspicuous tufts. Fresh caps are pale honey to tan and dry to cream or almost white, and their edges are hung with white toothed fragments of the partial veil, a fringe that is often the first thing noticed. The gills pass through white, then greyish-lilac, then finally deep purple-brown as the spores ripen, so a single cluster displays several gill colours at once.

It is one of the most common fungi of managed ground: lawns, verges, hedge bases, path edges, gardens and parks, wherever hardwood roots or buried timber persist beneath the surface. That habit makes it the mushroom most likely to appear unexpectedly in a suburban lawn in early summer.

How to identify it

Cap

3-8 cm across, occasionally to 10 cm, egg-shaped or conical at first, then bell-shaped and finally broadly convex to almost flat, often with a wavy and split margin in age. It is markedly hygrophanous: pale honey-brown, tan or ochre when moist, drying from the centre to cream, buff or nearly white. The surface is smooth and finely wrinkled when old, and the margin carries white, toothed or shaggy remnants of the veil, which may wear away with rain.

Gills

Crowded, narrow, attached to the stem (adnate to narrowly adnexed). Their colour progression is diagnostic: whitish and pale grey when young, then greyish-lilac or violet-grey, finally dark purple-brown to almost blackish-brown at maturity, usually with pale, finely fringed edges.

Stipe

4-10 cm long, 0.3-0.8 cm thick, white, smooth or finely silky, hollow and very brittle, snapping cleanly rather than bending. It is roughly equal in width, sometimes slightly swollen at the base, and may show a faint fibrillose ring zone left by the veil, though no true persistent ring develops.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white, extremely thin, watery and fragile, so caps tear and crumble easily. The spore print is dark purple-brown to blackish-brown, the key confirmation for the genus; spores are smooth and ellipsoid with a pore at the tip.

Where and when it grows

Psathyrella candolleana fruits on and around buried and exposed hardwood: dead roots, old stumps, buried timber, decaying fence posts, wood chips and rich woody debris. It is very often found on lawns, grass verges, path edges, hedge bottoms, garden beds and park grassland, where the wood it is feeding on lies unseen below the surface, and it also fruits directly on stumps and fallen branches in woodland.

Growth is typically in dense tufts and clustered troops rather than singly, and flushes appear from late spring through summer to autumn, particularly after heavy rain in warm weather. The species is common and widespread across temperate Europe, Asia, North America and beyond, and is one of the most reliably encountered fungi of disturbed and managed ground.

Ecological role

This is a saprotrophic fungus that decomposes dead hardwood, especially buried root systems and stumps left after trees are felled. It plays a significant role in clearing woody residues from soil in gardens, parks and woodland, gradually reducing dense root wood to soft, crumbling material that is reincorporated into the soil.

The genus as a whole is built for speed rather than persistence. Fruit bodies are thin, watery and short-lived, expanding within a day or two of rain, releasing a heavy load of dark spores and then collapsing. This boom-and-collapse strategy suits ephemeral moisture in open, sun-exposed habitats, and the abundant fruit bodies support slugs, fungus gnats and other invertebrates that in turn help spread the spores.

Similar species

Other Psathyrella species are numerous and often need microscopy, but Psathyrella spadiceogrisea is more uniformly date-brown with a less conspicuous veil fringe and fruits earlier in spring. Coprinellus micaceus grows in similar tufts on buried hardwood but has tawny, finely grooved caps dusted with glistening granules when young, and its gills liquefy into black ink as they mature rather than simply darkening.

Agrocybe praecox is comparable in size and habitat but is firmer-fleshed with a distinct membranous ring and a dull brown, not purple-brown, spore print. Hypholoma species on stumps have yellow to greenish-yellow tones and purple-brown spore prints but firmer flesh and no toothed veil fringe. Panaeolus species have blacker spore prints, tougher stems and mottled gills, and grow in grassland or on dung rather than on buried wood.

Why does the cap look different in the morning and afternoon?
The cap is hygrophanous: it is pale honey-brown while full of water and pales to cream or near-white as it dries, working outward from the centre. The same cluster can show two-tone caps with a dry pale disc and a moist darker rim.
What is the white fringe on the cap edge?
Torn remnants of the partial veil that covered the young gills, left hanging as white toothed or shaggy fragments along the cap margin. Heavy rain can wash them away, so old caps may show only traces.
Why does it appear in lawns if it grows on wood?
