Pavement Mushroom Identification Guide

A squat, very firm white Agaricus of compacted urban ground, recognised by its double ring, its short solid stipe and gills that start greyish pink rather than bright pink. This guide covers the full character set and the separations within the genus.

The Setting and the First Impression

The habitat does a lot of work here. This is the Agaricus of hard, compacted, disturbed ground: the gravel strip beside a car park, the packed earth of a footpath, a roadside verge scalped by tyres, the edge of a playing field, a builders track, and famously the seam where tarmac meets kerb, where fruitbodies can heave up slabs of asphalt as they expand. Your first impression is of something white, low and unusually solid. Where a field mushroom looks light and papery, this one looks and feels like a lump of compressed chalk. Caps often push up through the surface with soil and grit still stuck to them, so a partly buried, dome-shaped white object with a cracked crown is a typical first sighting. They frequently appear in small groups along a line of disturbance, and unlike most grassland Agaricus they are often out in high summer rather than autumn.

Reading the Cap

Dig gently around the fruitbody so that you can lift it whole with its base intact, because the base carries the key character. The cap is five to fifteen centimetres across, sometimes more, hemispherical at first and only slowly flattening to convex. The surface is white to dull cream or pale buff, dry, smooth to slightly fibrillose or finely scurfy, and very often stained brown or grey by the soil it pushed through. In dry weather the cuticle cracks into coarse plates, especially over the centre. The margin stays strongly inrolled for a long time and usually projects beyond the gills, and it frequently carries adhering scraps of veil. The whole cap is thick-fleshed and heavy for its size; pressing it with a thumb feels like pressing a firm apple rather than a sponge.

The Gills

The gills are free, crowded, narrow and rather deep, and their colour sequence matters. In this species they begin a dull greyish pink or pale flesh-brown, never the bright clean rose of a field mushroom, and even in the button stage a hand lens usually shows a greyish cast. They then pass through dull pink to reddish brown, dark chocolate brown and finally almost black. Because the veil stays closed for a long time, you may need to cut a button in half vertically to see young gill colour at all, which is a useful thing to do anyway.

Stipe, Ring and Base

The stipe is short, thick and completely solid, often shorter than the cap is wide, tapering downwards to a bluntly pointed or narrowed base rather than a bulb. Cut it lengthwise: there is no hollow and no pith cavity, just dense white flesh.

The ring is the defining feature and the reason for the epithet. There are effectively two collars. The upper one is a narrow, membranous ring sitting fairly low on the stipe, and below it there is a second, broader, sheathing, upturned collar that clasps the stipe like a shallow cup with its rim pointing upwards. On a fresh specimen the two are clearly separate; on a weathered one the lower sheath may be pressed flat against the stem and needs a fingernail to lift. The lower collar is often mistaken for a volva, but it is attached to the stipe along its length rather than forming a free bag around the base.

Flesh and Colour Change

Slice the fruitbody from cap to base and watch for at least five minutes. The flesh is thick, white and firm. It either stays white or develops a slow, faint pinkish or vinaceous flush, particularly in the stipe and just above the gills. What it does not do is turn bright chrome yellow, and the base in particular should show no sudden yellow flash when scratched. The odour is mild, pleasantly mushroomy and slightly earthy, without any aniseed note and without the inky, chemical, ink-like smell of certain relatives, which is easiest to detect by crushing a fragment of stipe base and smelling it immediately.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stipe flush and lay the cap gills-down on white paper under a bowl for four to eight hours. The print is deep chocolate brown to purplish brown, dense and easy to read. Any Agaricus should give this; a white print immediately moves you into a completely different group of white-capped fungi and should stop the identification dead.

Substrate and Season

This is a saprotroph with an unusual tolerance for compaction, drought and salt, which is why it colonises ground that suffocates most other soil fungi. Look on hard-packed paths, verges, roadside gravel, car park margins, playing field edges, urban lawns over rubble and, in coastal areas, sandy tracks. It commonly fruits in late spring and summer, often earlier than most grassland Agaricus, and can appear again in autumn. Fruitbodies push up slowly and can persist for a week or more because the flesh is so dense.

Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology

The field mushroom is the closest confusion by colour but differs on almost every structural point: thinner flesh, a softer cap, a single simple ring that is often fragile and quickly lost, a stipe that is more slender and tapers to a point, and young gills of a clean bright pink. It also prefers open grazed pasture rather than compacted ground.

The horse mushroom group is larger, with a ring that has a distinctive cogwheel or star-patterned underside, flesh that flushes yellow when rubbed, and a strong sweet aniseed odour. The yellow-staining relative shares the white cap and can occur in urban settings, but scratching the base of its stipe produces an immediate vivid chrome-yellow stain and crushing the tissue releases a sharp, inky, chemical smell; its cap is also more squarish when young and its ring is single.

A coastal relative that likewise grows on compacted saline ground has a cap that breaks into coarse scales, a browner tone, a strong briny odour and firmer, more sinuous ring remains, and its flesh reddens more definitely.

Finally, always rule out the white-capped fungi that carry a genuine volva. Lift the base out of the ground rather than snapping the stipe. If you find a free membranous sac or a collared rim around the base, gills that are white and stay white, and a white spore print, you are not in Agaricus at all.

Common questions

What does the double ring actually look like?
There are two separate collars on the stipe. The upper one is a narrow membranous ring set fairly low down. Below it sits a broader sheath that clasps the stem with its rim turned upwards, like a shallow cup pressed against the stalk. How do I separate it from the field mushroom?

It tolerates compaction, drought and a degree of salinity far better than most soil fungi, so it can colonise packed paths, gravel margins and roadside verges where competition is minimal. Its dense flesh and slow, powerful expansion allow developing fruitbodies to lift gravel and even crack thin asphalt as they push to the surface.
When is the best time to look for it?
Unusually early for the genus. It commonly fruits in late spring and through summer, often after heavy rain following a dry spell, with a second flush possible in autumn. Because the flesh is so dense, individual fruitbodies can persist in recognisable condition for a week or more rather than collapsing within days.
