Pear Trellis Rust Identification Guide
A two-host rust that paints orange spots on pear leaves in summer and produces a distinctive lattice of finger-like spore structures underneath, while spending the rest of its cycle as swellings on juniper. This guide covers both stages and the look-alikes.
The Setting and the First Impression
This fungus is identified from a plant, not from a fruitbody in the grass, and it needs two very different plants to complete its life. The usual first encounter is in a garden or orchard in early to midsummer: you glance at a pear tree and the upper surfaces of the leaves carry scattered, vivid orange to orange-red spots, roughly circular, a few millimetres to well over a centimetre across, standing out sharply against the green blade. On a heavily affected tree there may be dozens of spots per leaf and the whole canopy takes on a spotted, feverish look. The second encounter, for anyone who knows to look, is in spring on a juniper: swollen, spindle-shaped sections of branch that swell further in wet weather and push out gelatinous orange-brown tongues.
When you find the pear stage, look around within fifty metres or so for junipers, especially the low spreading and columnar garden forms. The presence of both hosts near each other is a genuine part of the identification rather than an incidental detail.
Reading the Upper Leaf Surface
Take an affected pear leaf and study a spot with a hand lens. The lesion is a rounded patch of thickened tissue, coloured from a bright orange or salmon at the margin to a deeper orange-red or almost scarlet at the centre, and it is slightly raised above the surrounding blade. As the season advances the centre often darkens to reddish brown or dies to a dull brown, while the outer ring stays orange.
Within the coloured patch, and best seen early, is a scatter of minute pinprick dots, glossy black or dark brown, sunk just below the surface. These are the flask-shaped structures the fungus produces first, and in damp weather they exude tiny sticky droplets. Under a lens they read as a dozen or two dark specks arranged loosely in the middle of an orange field. That combination of an orange spot studded with black points on the upper surface is highly characteristic.
Reading the Under Surface: the Trellis
Turn the leaf over. Early in the season the underside of a spot is simply pale and slightly swollen. From late summer onwards, however, the tissue directly beneath each spot bulges into a distinct brown, blister-like or cushion-shaped swelling, and from that swelling the diagnostic structure emerges: a cluster of pale brown to greyish, finger-like or horn-like projections, each a few millimetres long, standing more or less upright.
The key is what happens as they age. Each projection splits lengthwise into a set of fine strands that remain joined at the tip and at the base, so the whole structure opens out into a tiny cage, lattice or trellis of threads with orange-brown spore powder inside. Viewed under a lens, a mature cluster looks like a group of miniature woven baskets or open birdcages on the leaf underside. Nothing else on a pear leaf looks remotely like this, and it is the single conclusive character.
Fruit, Shoots and Whole-Tree Signs
Check the rest of the tree. Fruit is occasionally affected, showing raised orange lesions that distort and crack the surface and may bear the same lattice structures. Young shoots can develop swollen, slightly cankered orange-marked areas that persist and may die back the following year. On a heavily affected tree the spotted leaves often yellow around each lesion and fall early, so late summer defoliation with orange-ringed leaves on the ground under the tree is a useful secondary sign.
Reading the Juniper Stage
On juniper the appearance is entirely different, which is why the two stages were long thought to be different organisms. Affected branches carry perennial swellings: elongated, spindle-shaped or fusiform thickenings of the stem, sometimes with cracked, roughened bark, that persist and enlarge from year to year. In spring, particularly during prolonged rain, these swellings produce gelatinous masses. The tissue absorbs water and pushes out soft, jelly-like, orange-brown to dark brown tongues, ribbons or horns from the swollen bark, which can be several centimetres long when fully hydrated and which shrivel to inconspicuous dark crusts as soon as the weather dries. Foliage beyond a badly swollen section may thin or die back. Finding fusiform swellings that gelatinise in spring rain on a juniper growing near a spotted pear closes the loop.
Season and Cycle
The timing is diagnostic in itself. The juniper stage swells and produces its gelatinous masses in spring, roughly from the start of bud movement on the pear through to early summer, and it is triggered by wet, mild weather. Spores from those masses travel to nearby pear leaves. Orange spots become visible on the pear from late spring or early summer and intensify through the season; the black points appear first, and the trellis structures develop on the undersides from about midsummer through to leaf fall. Spores from the trellises travel back to juniper in late summer and autumn, where they establish the perennial swellings that will gelatinise the following spring. Because the juniper phase is perennial, an affected juniper will feed nearby pears year after year.
Separating the Look-alikes on Morphology
Pear scab produces spots too, but they are olive-green to sooty black and velvety, not orange, they lack any black pinprick dots in an orange field, and their undersides never bear finger-like structures.
Pear leaf blister mite makes raised blisters that start pale green or pink and turn brown then black, and they bulge on both leaf surfaces rather than pairing an orange upper spot with a brown lower cushion; there is no orange pigment and no lattice.
Other leaf spot fungi on pear produce brown or purplish lesions with defined dark margins and small dark fruiting dots on the underside, but those dots are flat and pustule-like, not projecting fingers.
Among the related rusts, several close relatives run the same two-host cycle but with different partners: one alternates between juniper and hawthorn, another with quince or medlar, and a well-known relative alternates between an eastern red cedar and apple. They are separated by the host on which you find the leaf stage, by the shape of the juniper structure, which in the apple relative is a rounded gall producing long slender jelly horns rather than a fusiform branch swelling, and by the length and splitting pattern of the leaf-underside projections. If the leaf stage is genuinely on pear and the projections split into cages, this species is the answer in most regions.
