Pearly Parachute Identification Guide

A practical field routine for naming Marasmius wynneae: pale pearly-lilac caps in troops on beech litter, wiry two-tone stems, and a white spore print.

The Scene You Are Standing In

The Pearly Parachute is a mushroom you usually notice as a texture before you notice a species. You are in a broadleaf wood in mid to late autumn, most often under beech, sometimes oak or hornbeam, on a bank of deep undisturbed leaf litter. Rather than one fruitbody there is a scatter, a troop, occasionally a long meandering arc of small pale caps sitting a few centimetres above the leaves on stems so thin they look like wire. From standing height the colour reads as dirty white or greyish cream. Crouch down and the young caps show something better: a soft pearly sheen with a distinct grey-lilac or violaceous flush, particularly over the centre.

The second thing to register is the litter itself. Marasmius wynneae binds dead beech leaves together with white mycelial cords, so when you lift a fruitbody a small mat of glued leaves usually comes with it. That litter-binding habit is part of the identification, not incidental.

Reading the Cap

Work from the outside in. The cap is 1.5-4 cm across, hemispherical at first, then convex and finally flattened, very often with a low blunt umbo or, in older material, a slight central depression. The surface is dry and matt, never sticky, with a fine silky-pruinose bloom that gives the pearly quality behind the common name.

Colour is the character people get wrong because it changes. Young caps are whitish with a lilac-grey, smoky violet or pale mauve wash. As the fruitbody ages and dries the violet drains away and the cap goes cream, then pale ochre or buff, usually with a darker tan centre. If every cap in your troop is buff, look for the youngest, smallest, most sheltered specimens at the edge of the group; they will still carry the lilac tint.

The margin is even at first and becomes faintly grooved or radially wrinkled with age, following the gills beneath. It is not deeply pleated like a folded paper fan; keep that distinction in mind for the look-alikes below.

Gills, Stipe and Base

Turn the cap over. The gills are white to greyish-cream, adnexed to almost free, moderately distant rather than crowded, of unequal length with shorter gills interspersed, and often with faint cross-veining between them near the margin. Critically, they run to the stipe and attach to it. There is no free collar or ring of tissue around the stem apex from which the gills hang.

The stipe is the most diagnostic organ. It is 3-7 cm long but only 1-3 mm thick, cylindrical, smooth and polished, and tough in a way soft-fleshed woodland fungi never are. You can bend it, twist it and tie it in a loose knot without it snapping. Colour is graded from top to bottom: whitish or pale flesh-coloured at the apex, passing through reddish-brown in the middle, and finishing dark brown to almost black over the lower third. At the very base sits a pad of white to pale strigose down and those white mycelial strands running out into the litter.

Cut the flesh and there is very little of it: thin, whitish, pliant, without a colour change. It will not redden, blacken, or exude anything. The odour is faint and unremarkable, at most a vague mushroomy sweetness, which is itself useful because a strongly scented small Marasmius points elsewhere.

The Revival Test

Marasmius species are marcescent. A dried-up fruitbody does not rot, it shrivels, and when rain returns it swells back to shape and continues shedding spores. In the field you can imitate this: take a shrivelled cap, wrap it in a damp tissue or drop it in a film pot with a wet leaf, and look again in twenty minutes. If it plumps back to a normal cap with normal gills, you are in Marasmius and its allies. A Mycena or a Gymnopus in the same state stays collapsed and slimy.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut the stipe off flush and lay the cap gill-side down on paper. Because the cap is small and the deposit is white, use dark paper, or half-black-half-white paper, and give it four to six hours under an upturned glass. The print is white. A fresh cap dries out fast, so add a scrap of damp tissue beside it, not touching it.

Under a microscope the spores are smooth, colourless, ellipsoid to almond-shaped and roughly 6-8 x 3-4.5 microns, non-amyloid. The cap cuticle carries the club-shaped, warted Rotalis-type cells typical of the genus, which is a satisfying confirmation if you have a scope, though the field characters are usually enough.

Substrate and Season

The substrate is dead broadleaf litter, overwhelmingly beech, plus the small twiggy debris mixed into it. It is not a wood-decayer in the sense of appearing on logs, and it is not mycorrhizal. Expect it from late summer through autumn, peaking after a wet spell in October and November, in shaded, sheltered, humus-rich woodland with a closed canopy. It favours neutral to calcareous soils in many regions but the litter layer matters more than the geology.

Separating the Look-Alikes

Marasmius alliaceus shares the litter habitat but is far taller, with a stipe 10-20 cm long that is blackish and velvety along almost its whole length rather than graded from white to black, and it carries a powerful alliaceous scent that M. wynneae lacks entirely.

Marasmius rotula and M. bulliardii are the true wheel-parachutes. Their caps are deeply pleated like a tiny parasol, and the gills are attached not to the stipe but to a free collar encircling it, leaving a visible gap around the stem. Once you have seen that collar you will never confuse them again.

Marasmius epiphyllus is much smaller, pure white, with very few widely spaced gills, and it grows on individual leaf veins and petioles rather than in dense troops.

Mycena species with lilac tones, such as M. pura, are fleshier and brittle, with hollow snap-off stems, conical striate caps, and no revival after drying; many carry a sharp, penetrating odour.

Gymnopus species such as G. dryophilus are broader, tan rather than pearly, with crowded gills and a smooth pale stem that lacks the black lower half.

Marasmius oreades is a grassland species with a thicker, uniformly pale buff stipe and a tan cap; habitat alone separates it.

Field Checklist

What single feature most reliably confirms a Pearly Parachute?
The two-tone wiry stipe. It is only a couple of millimetres thick, tough enough to knot, whitish at the apex and dark brown to blackish over the lower part, with a tuft of white down and mycelial strands at the base. Combine that with a pearly, faintly lilac-grey cap and a white spore print and the identification is secure.
Why do some collections look lilac and others plain buff?
The violaceous tint is strongest in young, shaded, moist fruitbodies and fades as the cap ages and dries, leaving cream to pale ochre with a darker centre. When a troop looks uniformly buff, search the margins of the group for the youngest buttons, which usually retain the colour.
What habitat should I search for it?
Deep, undisturbed broadleaf litter under a closed canopy, especially beech, from late summer into late autumn. Look on shaded banks and hollows where leaves accumulate; the fungus glues the litter together with white mycelial cords, so a mat of bound leaves lifts with the fruitbody.
Is it a wood-rotting or a mycorrhizal fungus?
Neither in the usual sense. It is a litter saprotroph, breaking down fallen leaves and fine twiggy debris on the forest floor. That is why it appears in troops and arcs across the litter layer rather than on logs or in association with a particular living tree root system.
