A small, slender bolete with wide coppery-rust pores running slightly down the stipe and a vivid chrome-yellow base, often found close to Fly Agarics on acid heathy ground.
Overview
The Peppery Bolete is a diminutive, rusty-toned bolete that stands apart from the large fleshy species most people picture when they hear the word. Rarely more than a few centimetres across, it is slender, brittle and easily passed over among the litter of birch and pine.
It is the best known member of Chalciporus, a small genus in the Boletaceae characterised by copper to rust coloured pores, small stature and a cinnamon rather than olive spore deposit. That rusty spore print is unusual for the family and is a good confirming character.
The species is also of considerable interest for its ecology: rather than behaving as a straightforward tree partner, it is repeatedly found in close association with the Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) and is thought to live at least partly at the expense of that fungus, making it one of very few boletes suspected of parasitising another mushroom.
How to identify it
Cap
Small, 2–7 cm across, convex then flattening and often slightly uneven or wavy at the margin. The surface is smooth, matt to slightly tacky in wet weather and drying shiny, coloured cinnamon, tawny, rusty ochre or warm reddish-brown, usually paler at the margin.
Pores
Distinctly wide, angular and irregular compared with most boletes, and coloured coppery rust, cinnamon-brown or reddish-brown from an early stage. They run slightly down the top of the stipe (subdecurrent) and stain darker brownish where handled rather than blue. The tube layer is concolorous with the pores.
Stipe
Slender and often curved or tapering downwards, 3–8 cm tall and rarely more than 1 cm thick, coloured like the cap or a little paler and yellower. The lower part and especially the basal mycelium are a vivid chrome to bright sulphur yellow, which is the single most reliable field character; scraping the litter from the base reveals it at once.
Flesh and spore print
Thin, pale yellowish to pinkish-buff in the cap and bright yellow in the stipe base, essentially unchanging or slowly darkening. The spore print is cinnamon to rusty brown, not olive, separating Chalciporus from the bulk of the family.
Where and when it grows
The Peppery Bolete grows on acid, sandy or peaty soils in birch and pine woodland, on heaths and heathy commons, in conifer plantations and among mossy litter on woodland banks. It is very often found within a metre or two of Fly Agarics, and where those are abundant it can be numerous.
Fruiting runs from late summer well into autumn, typically a little later than the large boletes of the same woods. It is widespread and common throughout Europe, across northern Asia and in North America, and it has been introduced with planted conifers into parts of the southern hemisphere.
Ecological role
Long assumed to be an ordinary ectomycorrhizal partner of birch and pine, Chalciporus piperatus is now widely thought to be at least facultatively parasitic on other fungi, in particular Amanita muscaria. Its persistent spatial association with Fly Agaric stands, its small fruit bodies and its comparatively meagre mycorrhizal structures all support that reading.
Where it has been carried around the world with nursery stock of pine and birch, it has spread alongside Amanita muscaria, which is consistent with a dependence on that fungus rather than solely on the trees. Whatever the precise relationship, it forms part of the dense below-ground fungal web of heathland and boreal-type woodland, where nutrient turnover is dominated by fungal rather than bacterial processes.
Similar species
Chalciporus rubinus is a rarer relative with brighter rose to ruby-red pores and a yellower cap, growing chiefly with oak. Suillus species that share pine woodland are stouter with sticky caps, yellow rather than rust-coloured pores, and often a ring or glandular dots on the stipe.
Xerocomellus chrysenteron and its allies have olive-brown to yellow pores that blue on bruising, cracked caps showing pink in the fissures, and an olive spore print. Small brown Leccinum species from the same birch woods are separated by their whitish pores and by the dark scabers roughening the stipe.
