Persistent Waxcap Identification Guide
A field-by-field walkthrough of the sharply conical, apricot-yellow Persistent Waxcap, from its waxy gills and grooved stipe to the blackening waxcaps it is most often confused with.
The First Impression
Waxcaps announce themselves by colour long before you can see any detail, and the Persistent Waxcap is one of the loudest. You are usually standing in short, mossy, close-cropped turf — an old churchyard, a hill pasture that has never seen fertiliser, a coastal dune slack, a lawn that has been mown but never fed — and what stops you is a small flame of lemon, gold or apricot standing upright in the sward. From a few paces the outline reads as a sharply pointed cone on a slim pale stalk, like a little wet witch's hat. The single most important first impression, and the one that gives the species its English name, is that the colour persists: nothing about this mushroom is turning black.
Reading the Cap
Take the cap in hand and look at its geometry before its colour. It is 2–7 cm across and often almost as tall as it is wide, acutely conical with a drawn-out point, and it never really flattens. As it ages the lower part of the cone spreads and the margin flares outward, splits radially, and lifts into irregular lobes, but a pointed umbo remains at the apex. That combination of a persistent sharp tip and a ragged, upturned skirt is very characteristic.
The colour runs from pale lemon through egg-yolk yellow to orange and apricot, sometimes a little paler toward the rim. In damp weather the surface is slightly greasy or tacky to the fingertips; in dry weather it becomes silky and faintly shining. Look along the cap in raking light and you should see fine innate radial fibrils that give a subtly streaked appearance, as though the colour had been brushed on. Old caps fade toward straw or dull orange and may develop brownish or greyish tones at the extreme margin, but they do not blacken.
The Gills
Turn the cap over. The gills are free to narrowly adnexed — that is, they either stop just short of the stipe or are shallowly notched where they meet it — and they are broad, thickish and rather widely spaced, with shorter intermediate gills between the full-length ones. They are white to pale yellow, often with a slightly paler edge, and in older caps they can pick up a faint orange flush from the cap.
Test their texture. Waxcap gills are exactly that: press one gently between finger and thumb and it smears with a soft, greasy, wax-crayon feel rather than tearing dryly. This waxy consistency, combined with the brittle snap of the flesh, is what separates Hygrocybe and its relatives from the many other brightly coloured grassland agarics.
Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is 4–10 cm long and 5–12 mm thick, roughly cylindrical but very often compressed, grooved or slightly twisted, so that in cross-section it is oval rather than round. It is concolorous with the cap or a shade paler — yellow to orange — and it is dry to faintly moist, never truly slimy. Run a thumbnail along it and you will feel the longitudinal fibres; the whole stalk splits lengthways into strands rather than snapping cleanly. It is hollow, and the extreme base is characteristically white, an abrupt change from the yellow above.
There is no ring, no ring zone and no volva. Slice the fruit body from cap apex to stipe base: the flesh is thin, pale yellowish in the cap and whiter below, and it does not change colour on exposure. Handle it roughly, pinch the gills, bruise the stipe, then set it aside and come back in an hour — there is still no darkening. This negative result is a genuine identification step, not an afterthought.
Taking a Spore Print
Cut the cap free, set it gills downward on a sheet of paper that is half white and half black, cover it with a cup or bowl to keep the air still and stop it drying, and leave it three to six hours. Waxcaps can be reluctant printers, especially when picked young or when the weather has been dry, so give it time and use a fully mature cap if you have one. The print is white — clearest against the dark half of the paper. Under a microscope the spores are smooth, colourless, broadly ellipsoid to ovoid, some slightly waisted, and comparatively large.
Substrate and Season
This is a grassland fungus. It fruits in unimproved, nutrient-poor, moss-rich turf: ancient pasture, hill grazing, churchyards and old lawns, sand dunes and machair, and sometimes grassy woodland rides and path edges. It does not grow on wood, dung or compost, and it is scarce or absent from grassland that has been ploughed, reseeded or fertilised — one reason waxcap assemblages are treated as indicators of long-undisturbed turf.
The season runs from late summer through autumn and, in mild maritime areas, into early winter. Fruiting follows rain, and fruit bodies often appear scattered singly or in small groups rather than in troops. The mycelium is long-lived, so productive patches are worth revisiting year after year.
Separating It from the Look-Alikes
Hygrocybe conica, the Blackening Waxcap, is the comparison that matters most, because a young one can look nearly identical: same sharp cone, same orange-yellow palette. The difference is behavioural rather than structural. Bruise the gills or stipe of H. conica, or simply leave the fruit body in the collecting box for an hour, and grey-black stains spread across it; whole fruit bodies eventually turn charcoal-black and stand in the grass like burnt matchsticks. The Persistent Waxcap never does this.
Hygrocybe chlorophana is yellow but convex to plane rather than conical, with both cap and stipe distinctly slimy, and adnate gills.
Hygrocybe cantharellus and H. miniata are much smaller, with convex to shallowly depressed, minutely scurfy caps and clearly decurrent gills that run down the stipe.
Hygrocybe punicea and H. reidii are red to scarlet and broadly conical at best, never with the drawn-out acute point.
Bolbitius titubans, the Yellow Fieldcap, can pass for a small yellow cone at a glance, but its flesh is paper-thin and collapsing, its gills turn rusty cinnamon within a day, and its spore print is rust-brown rather than white. It also favours enriched, dunged or recently disturbed grass.
Within the species itself, forms with broader, blunter caps and wider spores are often labelled H. persistens or H. konradii; most modern authors fold them into a single variable complex, so a slightly stouter cone in the same habitat need not be a different fungus.
