Pestle Puffball Identification Guide
How to recognise the club-shaped Calvatia excipuliformis in woodland litter, from its long sterile neck and deciduous spines to the vertical cut that separates any puffball from a young veiled agaric.
What Catches Your Eye
You are in autumn woodland — beech, oak or mixed broadleaf — or working along a shaded hedge bank, and something pale is standing upright in the leaf litter. It is not round. Most puffballs read as balls; this one reads as a club, a skittle or an old apothecary's pestle, 8–20 cm tall, with a rounded white or buff head sitting on an obvious tapering neck. That silhouette is the whole identification in miniature, and you can usually make the call from two metres away before you touch anything.
The Overall Architecture
Pick one and look at the proportions. The fertile head is subglobose to broadly egg-shaped, 3–8 cm and sometimes 10 cm wide, and it sits on a stout sterile stem that is frequently as long as, or longer than, the head is wide. The junction between the two is gradual rather than abrupt, giving the smooth pestle outline; there is no waist, no collar and no membranous sac at the base.
Now cut one in half from top to bottom with a sharp knife. This vertical section is the single most informative thing you can do with any puffball-shaped fungus. You should see two clearly different tissues. The head is filled with a uniform mass called the gleba, with no internal structure whatever — no cap outline, no gill plates, no embryonic stipe. Below it, the stem is spongy and chambered, like coarse foam or a bath sponge, and it stays sterile all its life. A thin diaphragm often separates the two.
Surface Texture Through the Season
The outer skin changes so much with age that young and old fruit bodies can look like different fungi. When fresh, the whole surface is white to cream and covered in short, fine spines, warts and granules, densest over the head, with slightly larger spines standing among clusters of smaller ones. These ornaments are ephemeral. Rub a fingertip across the head and they come away, leaving a smoother, faintly pitted or netted skin beneath.
As the fungus matures, the outer layer flakes off entirely, and the papery inner wall it exposes goes ochre, then tan, then a dull coffee-brown. The top does not develop the neat, pre-formed circular mouth you see on many smaller puffballs; instead the whole upper wall becomes brittle and breaks up irregularly, tearing open into a ragged bowl through which spores escape. Old specimens end up as brown cups on brown stalks.
The Gleba and the Spore Mass
In a young specimen the gleba is pure white, firm and slightly moist, with a texture like dense marshmallow. It passes through yellow, then olive, then chocolate to purplish-brown, softening at each step until it is a dry, weightless powder threaded with brown capillitium fibres. The sterile stem stays pale much longer and only gradually turns brownish.
You do not take a spore print from a puffball in the usual gills-down way. Instead, hold a mature fruit body over a sheet of white paper and tap it: a fine brown dust falls in visible clouds. Under the microscope the spores are globose, minutely warted or spiny, brown, roughly 4–5.5 µm, sometimes with a short stalk-like pedicel attached; the capillitium threads are brown, thick-walled and sparsely septate.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Pestle Puffball is a saprotroph of leaf litter and humus. Look for it in broadleaf and mixed woodland, along hedgerows and wood banks, in wood-pasture and parkland, and occasionally at woodland edges where the litter grades into rough grass or dune scrub. It prefers deep, rich, moist humus and often reappears in the same litter pockets.
The season runs from late summer through autumn. Uniquely useful for record-keeping, the tough sterile stem persists long after the head has blown away, standing through winter as a dark, weathered stump that is still recognisable in spring. Finding those old stalks in March tells you exactly where to return in September.
Separating It from the Look-Alikes
Lycoperdon perlatum, the Common Puffball, is the usual confusion. It is smaller (2–6 cm), pear-shaped or top-shaped rather than pestle-shaped, and its sterile base is short and stubby, never drawn out into a long neck. Its spines are conical and detach to leave a distinct net-like pattern of scars, and mature specimens open by a single, clean, well-defined apical pore rather than tearing open irregularly.
Lycoperdon pyriforme grows in dense clusters on rotting wood and stumps, has a nearly smooth granular surface, and shows conspicuous white mycelial cords binding the substrate at its base.
Calvatia utriformis, the Mosaic Puffball, is a grassland species that is much broader than tall; its surface cracks into large polygonal scales in a mosaic pattern, its base is short and stubby, and the whole top eventually falls away leaving a persistent bowl.
Calvatia gigantea needs no discussion at size — it is a 20–70 cm ball with essentially no stalk.
Lycoperdon echinatum is globose with a very short base and is covered in long, dark, curved spines that converge in tufts of three or four.
Tulostoma species are tiny heads on thin wiry stalks, with a defined mouth, and grow in sandy or mossy ground.
Earthballs (Scleroderma) are firm, rounded and stalkless to shortly rooted, with a thick, tough, scaly rind and a gleba that turns dark purple-black while still solid; they never build a spongy chambered stem.
Unopened Amanita "eggs" are the important structural check. Cut one vertically and you will see the silhouette of a young mushroom inside — a folded cap, gill plates, a small stipe — wrapped in a layered or gelatinous universal veil. A Pestle Puffball sectioned the same way shows only uniform gleba above and foam-like chambers below. If you can see the outline of a mushroom in section, it is not a puffball.
