Piggyback Rosegill Identification Guide

Volvariella surrecta grows out of decaying Clouded Funnel caps — this guide covers host recognition, the free pink-turning gills, the sac-like volva and the pink spore print that confirm it.

The Find That Identifies Itself

Piggyback Rosegill is one of the few agarics whose habitat does most of the identification for you. It is late autumn, you are in broadleaf or mixed woodland, and you have walked into a large troop or arc of Clouded Funnel, Clitocybe nebularis — big grey-capped mushrooms crowding through the leaf litter. Some of the older ones have collapsed and are softening into pale, sagging discs. Growing straight out of the top of one of those decaying caps is a small, silky, white mushroom on a slender stalk. That is Volvariella surrecta, and the relationship you are looking at is the diagnosis.

Confirm the Host First

Before examining your find, make sure of what it is standing on. Clitocybe nebularis has a 5–15 cm convex-then-flattened cap in cloud-grey to greyish-brown, usually with a pale bloom when fresh; crowded whitish to cream gills that are shallowly decurrent; a stout, fibrous, pale grey-white stipe that swells into a club at the base; a white to pale cream spore print; and thick white mycelium binding the litter beneath. It fruits in troops, rings and arcs in autumn, often late in the season. Piggyback Rosegill appears on senescent, softening or already half-rotted host caps, not on fresh firm ones — so search the tired part of the troop.

Reading the Cap

The rosegill's cap is 2–6 cm and occasionally 8 cm across. It starts ovoid to conical, becomes convex, and finally flattens with a low broad umbo. The surface is dry and silky, covered in fine radial fibrils that give it a satin sheen, and in the centre it may break into minute appressed fibrillose scales.

Colour is white to greyish-white or very pale grey-buff, sometimes with a faint tan wash over the disc in age. The margin is even at first, becoming faintly striate and often splitting in older fruit bodies.

The Gills

Look at how the gills meet the stipe: they are free, ending in a clean gap around the stipe apex so that you can run a knife blade between the gill edges and the stalk. They are crowded, broad and ventricose — deepest in the middle — with numerous short intermediate gills.

Their colour progression is the key character. They are white when young, then salmon-pink, and finally a definite dull pink-brown as the spores ripen. A small white woodland mushroom with free gills that turn pink is a very short list, and once you add the host and the volva the list has one item on it.

Stipe, Volva and Base

The stipe is 3–7 cm and sometimes 9 cm long, 3–8 mm thick, cylindrical and tapering slightly upward, white, silky-fibrillose to finely downy, solid at first and becoming stuffed. It is often gently curved where it has grown up out of the host cap.

There is no ring and no ring zone — check carefully, because this negative matters. At the base, however, there is a volva: a persistent, membranous, sac-like cup, 1–2 cm high, white at first and usually greying or browning with age, sometimes lobed at the rim. It can be tucked down inside the collapsing tissue of the host cap, so peel the host apart gently rather than snapping the mushroom off, or you will destroy the very structure you need to see.

Cut the fruit body lengthways. The flesh is white, thin, soft and unchanging on exposure; the smell is mild.

Taking a Spore Print

Cut a mature cap free and set it gills down on white paper — white, not black, because you want to see pink. Cover it with a glass and leave it two to four hours. The deposit is pink to salmon or pinkish-brown, and it is unmistakable once you have seen a decent one.

Under the microscope the spores are smooth, ellipsoid, moderately thick-walled and pale pink in mass, roughly 5–7 × 3.5–4.5 µm — small for the genus.

Substrate, Season and Ecology

This fungus is not a soil species and not a wood species. It is a mycoparasite, developing on and within the fruit bodies of other agarics, overwhelmingly Clitocybe nebularis, with scattered records from Melanoleuca and a handful of other litter agarics. The host itself is a leaf-litter decomposer of broadleaf and coniferous woodland, hedgerows, parkland and shady gardens, which is why those are the habitats where the rosegill turns up.

Season is autumn, and typically the later part of it, since the fungus needs host fruit bodies that have already begun to decay. It is genuinely uncommon and highly erratic: a site can produce nothing for years and then, in a season with a heavy Clouded Funnel flush, throw up several colonies at once. The practical search strategy follows directly — find a big troop of ageing Clitocybe nebularis and examine every collapsed cap.

Separating It from the Look-Alikes

Volvariella bombycina is far larger, with a silky-shaggy, pale yellowish-white cap and a large brown-staining volva, and it grows from wounds, hollows and cut ends of standing broadleaf trees. Wood, not another mushroom.

Volvopluteus gloiocephalus is large, greyish to brownish, and has a conspicuously sticky to slimy cap; it fruits on soil, compost heaps, wood chips and grassy waste ground.

Volvariella pusilla and V. hypopithys are small and white like the Piggyback Rosegill, but they grow on soil, litter or in moss; V. hypopithys is more distinctly hairy-fibrillose over the cap and stipe.

Pluteus species also have free gills that turn pink and a pink spore print, but they never have a volva, and they fruit on wood and woody debris.

White Amanita species combine free gills with a volva, which is exactly the pairing that catches people out. The separations are firm: Amanita gills stay white and the spore print is white, there is usually a ring on the stipe, and they are mycorrhizal species fruiting from soil beside trees, not from the corpse of another mushroom.

Asterophora species are the other mushrooms-on-mushrooms you are likely to meet, but they are tiny, grow on blackening Russula and Lactarius fruit bodies, have poorly formed or almost absent gills, and become powdery as they produce chlamydospores; there is no volva.

Squamanita species are parasitic too, but they emerge from a swollen, galled host base rather than sitting on a decaying cap, and they have scaly stipes and no free sac-like volva.

Common questions

What is the fastest way to recognise it?
Its position. A small, silky, white-to-greyish mushroom growing directly out of the decaying cap of another agaric — almost always Clouded Funnel, Clitocybe nebularis — is already a very short list. Confirm with free gills that turn salmon-pink, a slender ringless white stipe, and a membranous sac-like volva at the base.
How do I avoid destroying the volva when collecting?
Do not snap the stem off. The volva is often buried inside the softening tissue of the host cap, so lift the whole host cap along with the rosegill and tease the host apart with fingers or a knife tip. Without the volva you lose the character that separates Volvariella from Pluteus, which shares the free pink gills and pink print.
Where and when should I look?
In autumn, usually late in the season, in broadleaf and mixed woodland, hedgerows, parkland and shady gardens where Clouded Funnel fruits in troops and arcs through the leaf litter. The rosegill only appears on host caps that have begun to decay, so concentrate on the oldest, most collapsed fruit bodies in a troop.
How does it live?
It is a mycoparasite that colonises the fruit bodies of other agarics, drawing its nutrition from host tissue rather than from soil, litter or wood. Because it depends on a host flush that is itself weather-dependent, it is erratic and uncommon: a site may go several seasons without it, then produce several colonies in a year with a heavy Clitocybe nebularis fruiting.
