Overview

Boletus pinophilus is the conifer specialist of the Boletus edulis complex, a heavy-bodied bolete recognised by its deep mahogany, brick or reddish-brown cap. It was once treated merely as a variety of B. edulis, and older literature calls it Boletus pinicola, but its consistent colour, its stipe net and its strong attachment to pine have earned it species status.

Within the group it is the most richly coloured. Where B. edulis is tan to chestnut and B. aereus almost black, B. pinophilus is a warm reddish brown, often with an uneven, bumpy or slightly wrinkled cap surface and a faint whitish bloom on young specimens that rubs away at a touch.

It is a characteristic fungus of northern and montane pinewoods and of sandy coastal pine plantations, and in many such places it is the only large pale-pored bolete present in quantity.

How to identify it

Cap

The cap is 7-20 cm across, at first strongly domed with an inrolled margin, later broadly convex. Colour is a deep reddish-brown, mahogany, brick or chestnut, often darker and more saturated than any other member of the group except B. aereus. The surface is dry to slightly greasy, matte, frequently uneven, lumpy or shallowly wrinkled, and young caps carry a delicate pale bloom.

Pores

Pores are white and stuffed when young, becoming cream, yellow and finally olive-yellow. They are small, round and depressed around the stipe, and the tube layer detaches easily from the cap flesh. No blue reaction occurs on handling.

Stipe

The stipe is very stout, 6-15 cm tall and 3-7 cm thick, bulbous or barrel-shaped at first. Its ground colour is pale brown to reddish-buff rather than white, and it carries a raised network that is typically concolorous or faintly reddish-brown, concentrated on the upper half. The overall impression is of a browner, warmer stipe than the pale one of B. edulis.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is thick, firm and white, unchanging when cut, but often shows a distinct vinaceous or reddish-brown zone immediately beneath the cap skin. The spore print is olive-brown.

Where and when it grows

This species is closely tied to conifers, above all Scots pine and other two-needle pines, and also Norway spruce. It grows on sandy, freely draining acidic soils, in mossy pine woodland, on heathy ground under scattered pines, in coastal dune plantations and in montane forests up to the treeline. It is occasionally recorded with beech and sweet chestnut in southern Europe.

It has a distinctive twin season, fruiting in late spring and early summer and again in autumn, with the spring flush particularly characteristic in upland and northern sites. The range covers northern and montane Europe, extends across temperate Asia, and closely related populations occur in North America.

Ecological role

Boletus pinophilus is ectomycorrhizal with pines and spruces. Its mycelium forms a dense mantle over the short lateral roots of the host and penetrates between the cortical cells, creating the exchange interface through which mineral nutrients and water pass to the tree and sugars pass to the fungus. The partnership is especially valuable on the poor sandy and podzolic soils where this bolete thrives, since the fungal network can access nutrients bound in litter that the roots alone could not reach.

The spring fruiting habit is unusual among large boletes and is thought to reflect the rapid warming of light sandy soils. Fruit bodies often push up through moss carpets and pine needle litter, sometimes remaining half-buried, and are heavily colonised by insect larvae as they mature.

Similar species

Boletus edulis is paler, tan to chestnut, with a whitish stipe bearing a clearly white net and a pale rim to the cap. Boletus aereus is darker still, sooty bronze to blackish, and belongs to warm broadleaf woodland rather than pinewood. Boletus reticulatus is duller brown, has a dry cracking cap and a pale net covering the whole stipe.

Neoboletus and Suillellus species that occur in the same woods are separated at a glance by orange to red pore mouths and by flesh that flushes deep blue within moments of being cut, neither of which happens in B. pinophilus.
