A slender spring mushroom arising from buried pine cones, with a small pale brown cap, whitish widely spaced gills, and a long tawny rooting stem.
Overview
The Pinecone Cap belongs to Strobilurus, a small genus whose species all fruit from the buried or partly buried cones of conifers. They are among the earliest mushrooms of the year in northern woodland, appearing from late winter onward when little else is up, which alone makes them worth noticing.
The genus name means roughly cone-tail, referring to the long root-like stem that connects each fruit body to its cone. In Strobilurus tenacellus this pseudorhiza is often two or three times the length of the visible stem, smooth, tough, and yellow-brown, and pulling a specimen straight up usually snaps it before the cone appears.
Compared with the autumn-fruiting Conifercone Cap, this species has noticeably fewer and broader gills, a longer and cleaner stem, and a distinctly early season. It is a good example of how mushroom identification often depends as much on substrate and timing as on colour.
How to identify it
Cap
Small, generally 1-2.5 cm across, convex at first then flattening, sometimes with a faint umbo. The surface is smooth and slightly greasy when wet, pale grey-brown, dull ochre, or clay-brown, often paler towards the margin and fading as it dries.
Gills
Adnexed, moderately spaced rather than crowded, fairly broad, white to pale cream and remaining pale into maturity. The contrast between whitish gills and a brownish cap is a useful field mark.
Stipe
Slender, 2-6 cm above ground and 1-2.5 mm thick, whitish at the apex and shading through ochre to tawny brown below, smooth to minutely velvety. The base continues as a long, tough, tapering root that runs down through litter and soil to the cone.
Flesh & spore print
The flesh is thin, whitish, and soft in the cap but tough in the stem. The spore print is white.
Where and when it grows
This species fruits from fallen pine cones, chiefly Scots pine and related two-needle pines, that have become buried in litter, moss, or soil. Because the cone is rarely visible, fruit bodies appear to be growing straight from the ground, and only careful excavation reveals the connection.
The season is unusually early, running from late winter through spring and occasionally into early summer, with the peak often in March and April in temperate regions. It is widespread through the pine woods and plantations of Europe and temperate Asia, with closely related species filling the same niche in North America.
Ecological role
Strobilurus tenacellus is a saprotroph specialising in the decomposition of buried pine cones. The resinous cone scales resist decay, and the fungus is one of relatively few organisms able to colonise them, giving it a dependable and largely uncontested substrate.
Its spring fruiting takes advantage of cool, moist conditions and the near absence of competing fungi. The long pseudorhiza allows the fruit body to reach daylight from a cone buried several centimetres deep, and repeated flushes may appear from the same cone across successive seasons until the substrate is exhausted.
Similar species
Strobilurus esculentus is very similar but fruits from spruce cones and typically has a darker, more sepia to blackish-brown cap. Strobilurus stephanocystis also grows on pine cones and is best separated microscopically, though it tends to have a slightly darker cap centre and a shorter, sturdier root.
Baeospora myosura shares the cone habitat but fruits in autumn and early winter, has strikingly crowded narrow gills, and shows fine white hairs on the stem base rather than a smooth tawny root. Small Mycena species near cones have conical, strongly striate caps and a brittle stem lacking a long root.
