A large hollow ball that develops underground then bursts through the soil and splits into a crown of rays, revealing a lilac to violet inner surface.

Overview

Pink Crown is among the most dramatic of the spring cup fungi. It begins as a whitish hollow sphere buried in the soil, swelling until it forces its way to the surface, then tearing open across the top into a ring of pointed rays like a crown or a starfish. The freshly exposed inner surface is pale lilac to violet or pinkish-purple, deepening with age, while the outer surface stays dirty white and encrusted with soil.

Sarcosphaera is a monotypic or near-monotypic genus in the Pezizaceae, closely related to Peziza but distinguished by its hypogeous development and the crown-like dehiscence of the mature fruiting body.

A fully expanded specimen may be 5–15 cm across, making it one of the largest of the spring cups and unmistakable when found in its typical chalky conifer woodland.

Fruiting body

Starts as a hollow, whitish to pale cream ball 3–8 cm across, developing entirely below the soil surface. As it matures it pushes upward and the upper wall splits radially into 5–12 irregular, pointed, triangular rays that spread outward, producing a crown or star up to 15 cm across. The base remains buried, sometimes deeply.

Inner surface

The fertile inner lining is smooth and pale lilac, violet, mauve or pinkish-purple when fresh, often becoming a stronger violet-brown with age and dulling to greyish-brown in old specimens. This colour is the single most useful character.

Outer surface

Dull whitish to pale cream or greyish, smooth to slightly roughened, usually caked with soil, grit and root fragments from its underground development.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is thick for a cup fungus, whitish, firm and brittle, snapping cleanly with no colour change on cutting. A spore deposit is white; the spores are colourless, smooth and elliptical, typically containing two oil droplets. Fruiting bodies occur singly or in scattered groups, often partly hidden by litter until the crown breaks through.

Where and when it grows

It grows in well-drained calcareous soils — chalk and limestone country — in coniferous and mixed woodland, most often under spruce, pine and fir, and also under beech. It buries itself in the humus and mineral layer beneath a deep needle or leaf litter, so specimens are frequently found by noticing a domed lift in the litter before the crown opens.

The season is spring into early summer, chiefly April to June in temperate Europe, sometimes appearing alongside the first spring morels. It is widespread but local across Europe, and also recorded from parts of North America and Asia in comparable calcareous montane forest.

Ecological role

Sarcosphaera coronaria is understood to be ectomycorrhizal, forming associations with the roots of conifers and beech and exchanging soil-derived water and minerals for host photosynthates. Its restriction to particular soil types and tree associations is consistent with a symbiotic rather than free-living decomposer lifestyle.

The hypogeous development shelters the fruiting body while it builds substantial thick-walled tissue, and the crown-splitting mechanism releases the whole fertile surface to the air at once. A mature crown will puff a visible cloud of spores when disturbed or warmed by sunlight, an effective release strategy for a fungus fruiting close to the ground under dense litter.

Similar species

Geopora sumneriana also develops underground and splits into rays, but its inner surface is whitish to pale grey and its outer surface is coarsely brown-hairy, and it is tied to cedar rather than to conifers and beech on chalk. Various Peziza species share the violet or purplish inner tones — P. violacea and P. praetervisa for instance — but they are far smaller, sessile surface cups that never form a buried ball or a split crown.

Large Peziza species such as P. badia have a brown to olive-brown interior and grow on the soil surface with an intact margin. Immature specimens of Pink Crown can resemble a puffball or a false truffle when unearthed, but slicing one lengthways reveals a hollow chamber with a smooth lining rather than a solid spore mass or a marbled interior.
