Pink Domecap Identification Guide

A step-by-step field routine for Calocybe carnea: a small rosy-capped grassland agaric with white crowded gills, a concolorous pink stem and a white spore print. Includes how to rule out Entoloma, Mycena pura and Laccaria on structure.

The First Impression and Where You Are Standing

Pink Domecap is a lawn and meadow mushroom, and the setting matters as much as the fungus. You find it in short, mossy turf — old churchyards, unimproved pasture, park grass that has not been fertilised into a monoculture, road verges, sometimes the mossy edge of a garden path. It fruits in scattered troops, occasionally in loose arcs, and rarely in dense clumps.

At a glance it registers as a small, neat, distinctly pink mushroom sitting a few centimetres above the grass. The pink is not a wash or a flush; it is the actual colour of the cap, somewhere between rose, dull salmon and brick, and it is the same colour as the stem. That colour continuity between cap and stem, against pure white gills, is the mental image to carry.

Reading the Cap

Caps measure 2 to 5 cm across, sometimes reaching 6 cm on rich ground. They start markedly convex — domed, hence the name — and slowly expand to broadly convex and finally almost flat, often keeping a slight central swelling and a gently wavy margin in age.

The surface is dry and smooth, matt to very finely felted, without scales, without a slimy skin and without any granular or frosted coating. In wet weather it can look slightly darker and more saturated, but it is not strongly hygrophanous and it does not develop translucent striations at the margin. Colour ranges from clear rose-pink through pinkish brick to a duller brownish pink; the centre is usually a touch darker than the rim, and the whole thing pales gradually with age and sun exposure.

Feel the cap edge. It should be thin, even, incurved when young and straightening later, without splitting into a fringe.

The Gills — the Key Contrast

Turn it over and the diagnostic contrast appears. The gills are white to cream and stay that way through the whole life of the mushroom. They never turn pink, never turn brown, never grey. On a fully mature specimen with a faded cap the gills should still be pale.

They are crowded — packed closely enough that you cannot easily count them without a lens — and fairly narrow. Attachment is adnexed to slightly sinuate: they run up to the stem, broaden, then notch or pull back just before the join, so there is a shallow indentation where gill meets stipe. They are not decurrent and do not run down the stem.

Gill edges are even and concolorous with the faces. Short intermediate gills are numerous and inserted at several lengths.

The Stipe and the Base

The stem is 2 to 5 cm long and 3 to 8 mm thick, cylindrical or slightly tapering downwards, and pink in the same tone as the cap, often a shade paler. Longitudinal silky fibrils give it a faintly streaked appearance, and there is no ring, no ring zone, no volva and no veil remnants of any kind.

Dig rather than pick, and look at the base. It is usually finished with a small pad of white mycelium binding soil, moss and grass roots — a clean white patch that contrasts with the pink stem above it. There is no bulb, no rooting cord and no sac. The stem is stuffed with a soft pith when young and can become narrowly hollow with age; it flexes and tears fibrously rather than snapping cleanly.

Flesh and Colour Change

Slice a specimen vertically. The flesh is white and firm in the cap, white to faintly pinkish in the stem cortex, and it does not change colour on exposure. Leave a cut half for ten minutes and re-examine: still white. No blueing, no reddening, no browning, no exuded fluid. The odour is faint and mealy, best detected by breaking the flesh and smelling immediately.

That combination — firm white unchanging flesh under a pink cap — narrows the field substantially, because several pink-capped grassland mushrooms have watery, discolouring flesh.

Taking a Spore Print

Do this properly, because the spore print is what closes the identification.

Cut the stem flush with the gills and set the cap gill-side down on a card that is half white and half black, so a pale deposit shows against the dark half and a coloured one shows against the pale half. Cover with a bowl and leave for four to eight hours in a still, cool place; overnight is ideal. If the cap is dry, breathe on the gills or wrap the cap briefly in a damp tissue before setting it, because a desiccated cap may drop nothing.

The deposit is white to very pale cream. Read it in daylight and, if it is thin, scrape it together with a blade edge into a denser line before judging the colour. A white print is decisive: the most frequently confused grassland pinks have pink or pinkish-brown deposits.

Habitat, Season and Ecology

Pink Domecap belongs to open grassland. It grows on soil among grass and moss, favouring short, well-established, low-nutrient turf, and it is associated with the kind of old, unploughed and unfertilised swards that also support waxcaps and earthtongues. Mown but unimproved lawns, cemeteries, dune grassland and grazed pasture are all productive.

The season runs from summer into autumn, often starting earlier than the main waxcap flush and continuing alongside it. It is a decomposer working through the litter and root-mat layer of the turf rather than a partner of trees, which is why it appears in the open with no woody plant nearby. Repeat appearances in the same patch of grass over successive years are normal.

Separating It From the Look-alikes

Entoloma species are the most important comparison, and several pinkish-capped ones share grassland. The separation is the spore print and the gill history: Entoloma gills start whitish or grey and turn distinctly salmon-pink as spores mature, and the print is pink. Pink Domecap gills stay white and the print is white. Entoloma stems are also typically grey, brown or whitish rather than matching a pink cap.

Clitopilus and Rhodocybe species likewise deposit pink spores. Clitopilus has decurrent gills running down the stem; Pink Domecap gills notch away from it.

Mycena pura and its relatives can look similar in colour, but the cap is thin-fleshed, radially grooved or translucently striate at the margin, the stem is hollow, smooth and cartilaginous with a snap, the gills are broader and much less crowded with a fine interveining, and the odour is strongly radish-like rather than mealy.

Laccaria laccata is pinkish-brown to orange-brick with the same white spore print, but its gills are thick, waxy-looking and widely spaced — you can count them at arm's length — and typically flushed pink themselves, and its stem is tough, twisted and fibrous. It is also a woodland and heath species associated with trees, not a mushroom of open old turf.

Calocybe gambosa shares the genus, the crowded white sinuate gills, the firm white flesh and the strong mealy odour, but it is white to cream all over with no pink anywhere, is much larger and stouter, and fruits in spring, often in large rings at hedge and wood margins.

Marasmius and Gymnopus species in grass have tough, wiry, often dark stems, far fewer and broader gills, and revive after drying, none of which fits.
