A stout, cauliflower-shaped coral fungus with a thick white trunk and crowded branches whose tips are washed pink to wine-red. It grows from soil in broadleaf woodland and is one of the bulkiest of the branched fungi.

Overview

Pink-tipped Coral is one of the most substantial branched fungi in temperate woodland, forming rounded, cauliflower-like masses that can reach the size of a grapefruit or larger. It belongs to Ramaria, a large genus in the family Gomphaceae and the order Gomphales, a group only distantly related to the typical gilled mushrooms despite sometimes sharing the woodland floor with them.

What sets the species apart within a notoriously difficult genus is its combination of a very thick, short, whitish basal trunk and dense, repeatedly forked branches whose extreme tips carry a distinct pink, rose or wine-red flush while the rest of the fruiting body stays cream to pale buff. Older specimens fade toward ochre and the tip colour can wash out, so fresh material shows the character best.

In the wider fungal world, Ramaria species occupy the branched-coral niche that has evolved several times independently. Spores are produced over the whole outer surface of the branches rather than on gills or in tubes, an arrangement that maximises surface area on a simple three-dimensional structure.

How to identify it

Fruiting body

A compact, rounded to broadly domed mass typically 6-20 cm across and 5-15 cm tall, arising from a single stout base. The overall silhouette is that of a small cauliflower or a stubby sea coral, much wider and denser than most other coral fungi.

Trunk and branches

The basal trunk is thick, white to cream, often 3-6 cm across, and quickly divides into several main limbs which fork again and again. Branches are pale cream to pinkish-buff, cylindrical and rather fleshy, and the crowded upper branchlets end in short, blunt, two- to four-pointed tips. Those tips are the key mark: fresh material shows them tinted pink, rose, magenta or wine-red, contrasting sharply with the paler body.

Flesh and spore print

Flesh is white, firm and brittle, marbled in section, and may slowly discolour dull brownish where cut or handled. The spore deposit is pale ochre to yellowish, best seen where fruiting bodies overlap or on litter beneath them; under magnification the spores are elongated and finely striate lengthwise.

Where and when it grows

Pink-tipped Coral fruits directly from soil and leaf litter in mature broadleaf woodland, with a strong preference for beech and oak and a liking for well-drained, often calcareous ground. It is also recorded under mixed stands including hornbeam and chestnut, and in some regions under conifers.

Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, typically appearing after sustained rain. The species is widespread across Europe, temperate Asia and North America, though it is patchy and tends to reappear year after year in the same favoured spots once established.

Ecological role

This is an ectomycorrhizal fungus, forming sheaths around the fine root tips of its host trees and exchanging soil-derived water, nitrogen and phosphorus for sugars produced by the tree. That partnership explains why it is confined to established woodland and cannot be cultivated on wood or compost.

The mycelium is long-lived and permeates the upper soil horizons, contributing to nutrient cycling and to the physical structure of the litter layer. Fruiting bodies decay slowly and are worked over by fungus gnats, beetles and mites, releasing spores gradually across the whole branch surface rather than in a single drop.

Similar species

Ramaria rubripermanens is closely similar with pink tips but is generally slighter, retains its tip colour longer into maturity, and differs in spore dimensions under the microscope. Ramaria formosa has salmon to pinkish branches throughout with contrasting yellow tips rather than pink tips on a cream body, and its flesh discolours more readily.

Clavulina coralloides is far smaller and pure white with finely crested, antler-like tips and a white spore print, never forming a bulky trunk. Ramaria stricta is easily separated by its strictly upright, parallel branching and by growth on wood or buried woody debris rather than from bare soil.

What makes the pink tips reliable for identification?
The colour is confined to the extreme branch tips while the trunk and lower branches remain white to cream. In fresh specimens this two-tone effect is obvious, but it fades with age and weather, so pale old specimens should be judged on the stout white trunk and dense cauliflower form instead.
How large does Pink-tipped Coral get?
Clusters are commonly 6-20 cm across and 5-15 cm tall, occasionally larger in good seasons. It is among the bulkiest branched fungi in temperate woodland, noticeably more massive than the slender white or grey Clavulina corals.
