An unmistakable rose-pink to lilac waxcap whose sharply conical cap splits and flares upward like a ballerina's skirt above a white fibrous stem.
Overview
The Pink Waxcap is the most celebrated and most photographed of the grassland waxcaps. Nothing else in short turf is that clean rose-pink, and nothing else opens in quite the same way: the sharply conical cap expands, the thin margin splits into radiating lobes, and the lobes curve upward and outward into a shape universally described as a ballerina's tutu.
It was long placed in Hygrocybe and is still widely listed as Hygrocybe calyptriformis, but molecular work moved it to the small genus Porpolomopsis. It retains all the classic waxcap features — thick, soft, distant, waxy gills and a white spore print — but its pink pigment and its splitting cap are unique in the grassland fungus flora of northern Europe.
It is also one of the strongest indicators of high-quality grassland. Rare and localised across its range, it is a priority conservation species in several European countries, and a site that produces Pink Waxcaps is almost always an old, unploughed, unfertilised sward.
How to identify it
Cap
3–8 cm across, acutely conical when young with a sharply pointed apex, then expanding while keeping the umbo, so that mature caps are broadly conical with strongly upturned, radially split lobes. The surface is dry to faintly greasy, silky and finely radially fibrillose, and coloured a delicate rose-pink to lilac-pink, fading to pale pink or nearly whitish-pink with age, often palest at the margin.
Gills
Thick, soft, waxy and widely spaced, free to narrowly adnexed. They are pale pink to whitish-pink, distinctly paler than the cap, broad and ventricose, with a soft slightly greasy feel when rubbed.
Stipe
Tall and slender, 5–12 cm high and 5–15 mm thick, white to very pale pink, dry, longitudinally fibrous and often twisted or grooved, hollow and rather brittle, sometimes splitting lengthwise. There is no ring and no volva, and the base is white.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is thin, white to pale pink, fragile and unchanging when cut, with no bruising reaction. The spore print is white and the spores are smooth and ellipsoid.
Where and when it grows
Restricted to old, closed, unimproved grassland: ancient hay meadows, unfertilised upland and lowland pasture, churchyards, cemetery lawns, chalk and limestone downland and occasionally very long-established garden lawns. It requires soils of low fertility and long continuity, and is absent from ploughed, reseeded or fertilised ground.
Fruiting is concentrated in autumn, mainly from late September to November, usually as scattered individuals or small groups rather than large troops. The species occurs across western and central Europe, with strongholds in Britain and Ireland, and is scarce and declining everywhere as old grassland is lost; it appears on national red lists and conservation priority lists in several countries.
Ecological role
Porpolomopsis calyptriformis forms a slow-growing perennial mycelium in undisturbed grassland soil. Like other waxcaps it is not a wood or litter decomposer; the group is now believed to be biotrophic, deriving carbon from association with grassland plants or mosses, which explains their extreme sensitivity to fertiliser input and soil disturbance and their failure to grow on standard culture media.
Because colonies establish slowly and are eliminated by ploughing or nutrient enrichment, the fungus effectively records grassland history. Fruit bodies appear after autumn rain, often in the same spots year after year, and their scarcity relative to the amount of suitable-looking turf reflects how demanding the underlying mycelium is.
Similar species
There is little to confuse it with once the pink colour and split conical cap are seen. Hygrocybe conica shares the conical shape but is orange or scarlet and blackens on bruising. Pale, faded specimens might suggest Cuphophyllus virgineus, but that species is white with strongly decurrent gills and a much shorter, non-fibrous stem.
Porpolomopsis calyptriformis var. domingensis and pale forms can look almost white; check the fibrous white stem, the free to narrowly adnexed gills and the radially split, upturned cap margin. Pinkish Entoloma species in the same grassland have thin, crowded gills that turn salmon as spores mature and give a pink spore print, quite unlike the white print and thick waxy gills here.
