Pinwheel Mushroom Identification Guide

How to recognise Marasmius rotula in the field: the pleated white parachute cap, the wiry black horsehair stipe, and the free collar that the gills attach to instead of the stem.

First impressions and the setting

You usually meet the Pinwheel Mushroom while looking at something else. The scene is damp deciduous woodland after rain, and the fruit bodies are scattered across a fallen branch, a rotting twig, a buried root or a bed of sodden leaf litter, often dozens at once. Each one is tiny: a white to cream cap 3-20 mm across on a hair-thin dark stem 2-8 cm tall. From above, the group looks like a scatter of miniature parasols; from the side, like a set of white pins pushed into the wood.

The name comes from the cap surface. Deep radial grooves run from the margin almost to the centre, and between them the cap is faintly scalloped, so the whole thing reads as a pleated wheel or a small parachute. That pleating plus the near-black wiry stalk is a combination you can learn to spot at walking pace.

Reading the cap

Bring one up to eye level rather than crouching. The cap is convex to almost flat, and the centre is depressed into a small navel, usually darker than the rest, ranging from pale tan to grey-brown. The rest of the cap is white, cream or very pale buff, and it is dry, matt and thin as tissue.

Count the pleats if you like. They correspond to the gills beneath, are strongly furrowed rather than merely lined, and give the margin a distinctly wavy, scalloped edge. Hold the cap up to the light and the flesh is almost translucent between the ribs.

The cap is also marcescent, which is the practical field character that separates the whole genus from soft fleshy mushrooms. A dried-out specimen shrivels to a papery scrap and then, after the next rain, rehydrates and looks fresh again rather than rotting away. If a tiny white mushroom on a twig looks freeze-dried but intact, it is far more likely to be a Marasmius than a Mycena.

The collar: the character that settles it

Turn the cap over and use a hand lens. The gills are white, few in number, thick for such a small mushroom, and widely spaced, and they do not reach the stem. Instead they all run inwards and terminate on a narrow free ring of tissue, a collarium, that encircles the stipe like a tiny washer without being fused to it. Under a lens you can see clear space between that collar and the stem itself.

This is the single most diagnostic feature of Marasmius rotula. A pin or the tip of a knife slid between collar and stipe passes straight through. Most small white woodland mushrooms have gills that attach directly to the stem, sometimes running down it; a free collar is unusual and immediately narrows the field to a small group.

Stipe, base and rhizomorphs

The stipe is 2-8 cm long and under 1 mm thick, tough, wiry and elastic rather than brittle. It is smooth, shining, and looks polished, like a length of horsehair. Colour is graded: pale near the cap, often whitish or pale brown at the very apex, darkening downwards to a deep red-brown or black at the base.

Try to bend it. It flexes and springs back, and it resists being snapped, which is another whole-genus character worth training your fingers on. Fleshy caps on tough, hair-like stems is the Marasmius signature.

Now follow the base into the substrate. It arises from wood, bark, twigs, petioles or buried debris, and very often you can find black, shoelace-thin cords running across the surface of the wood. These are rhizomorphs, bundled hyphae that let the fungus travel between scraps of litter, and they look like a fine black hair net over the substrate. Several fruit bodies commonly arise from a single visible cord.

Flesh and colour change

The flesh is white, extremely thin and unchanging. Cutting or bruising the cap produces no bluing, reddening or blackening, and there is no milk or latex. Odour is negligible or faintly mushroomy. There is no ring and no volva. If a tiny pleated mushroom exudes any liquid or discolours, you are not looking at this species.

Taking a spore print

This is fiddly at 10 mm and worth doing properly. Cut the cap from the stem with a razor blade or fine scissors, set it gill-side down on a small square of glass or on black paper, and cover it with an upturned shot glass or film canister to keep the humidity up. Because the cap is so thin it dries out fast and stops dropping spores, so a humid chamber matters more here than with larger species.

Give it two to six hours. The print is white to very pale cream, and on black paper it shows as a faint circular ghost. That white print is what separates the Pinwheel from the pleated inkcaps, which look superficially similar from above but drop black spores.

Substrate, season and ecology

Marasmius rotula is a saprotroph of small woody debris in broadleaf woodland: fallen sticks, bark chips, buried twigs, leaf petioles, occasionally the mossy base of a living trunk. It is not associated with living roots and is not host-specific, though oak, beech and other hardwoods dominate its usual haunts. Its rhizomorph network lets it colonise scattered fragments of litter, which is why fruit bodies often appear in long lines or arcs following a hidden stick.

Fruiting runs from late spring through autumn wherever rainfall is reliable, and it responds within a day or two of a soaking. Because it revives rather than decays, a single flush can remain findable for weeks.

Separating it from look-alikes on morphology alone

Horsehair Parachute and its relatives (Marasmius androsaceus group). These share the black wiry stem and rhizomorphs, but the gills attach directly to the stipe with no free collar, the cap is more reddish-brown or pinkish-buff and less deeply pleated, and they favour conifer needles and heather stems.

Marasmius capillaris and Marasmius bulliardii. Both are collared like the Pinwheel and are the hardest separations. Marasmius capillaris grows on fallen oak or beech leaves, is duller and greyer, has a stipe that is black or dark brown to the very apex, and lacks a strongly darker cap centre. Marasmius bulliardii is smaller, also a leaf-dweller, and has a sharply defined dark spot in the cap depression. The Pinwheel is larger, whiter, more strongly pleated and is a wood and twig species.

Pleated inkcaps (Parasola species). Similar pleated parasol outline, but their stems are white, straight and fragile rather than black and wiry, they collapse rather than reviving, they grow from soil or dung rather than sticks, and they drop a black spore print.

Small Mycena species. Gills attach to the stem, caps are lined rather than deeply furrowed, the flesh is soft and the stipe brittle, and many exude juice or carry distinctive smells. None revive after drying.

A quick field sequence
