A clustered wood-dwelling mushroom with a wrinkled tan cap, a firm white stipe bearing a persistent ring, and gills that darken from whitish to tobacco brown. It grows in tiers on poplar and other soft hardwoods.
Overview
Cyclocybe aegerita (long known as Agrocybe aegerita or Agrocybe cylindracea) is a wood-inhabiting mushroom of warm temperate and Mediterranean regions, growing in dense tiered clusters from the trunks, stumps and exposed roots of poplars and other soft-wooded broadleaves. Its Italian name, pioppino, simply means 'little poplar one'.
It is distinctive among brown-spored wood-dwellers for its firm, fleshy build: a smooth, matt cap that develops a network of fine wrinkles and shallow cracks as it dries, a stout white stipe with a well-formed membranous ring, and a rooting base that runs into the bark. The colour contrast between the dark, water-soaked young cap and the pale cracked surface of an older one can make specimens from one cluster look like different species.
The genus Cyclocybe (Strophariaceae, or Bolbitiaceae in older treatments) is characterised by dull brown spores, a smooth spore surface, and gills that darken evenly rather than becoming mottled.
How to identify it
Cap
The cap is 4–12 cm across, hemispherical then convex and eventually flat, sometimes with a low broad umbo. Young caps are deep chestnut to dark reddish-brown; as they lose moisture they fade outward from the centre to tan, ochre-buff or nearly cream, so the mature cap is often two-toned with a darker disc. The surface is dry and matt and typically develops fine radial wrinkles and a shallow crazed or cracked pattern with age. The margin is smooth, sometimes hung with faint veil remnants when young.
Gills
Gills are adnate to slightly decurrent with a tooth, moderately crowded, and pale greyish-white at first. They shift through pale clay to a dull cinnamon and finally tobacco brown as spores mature, with edges staying paler. Clusters shed enough spores to dust the caps of the mushrooms below them a rusty brown.
Stipe
The stipe is 5–12 cm long, 1–2 cm thick, whitish to pale buff, firm, fibrous, often curved where clusters emerge sideways from a trunk, and tapering or slightly rooting at the base where several stipes fuse. It carries a persistent, thin, membranous white ring in the upper third; the ring is often dusted brown by falling spores and the stipe below it may become browner with age.
Flesh and spore print
The flesh is white and firm in the cap and tougher and more fibrous in the stipe, unchanging when cut, with a mild odour often described as faintly of wine or damp wood. The spore print is a dull tobacco brown, never rusty-orange and never purple-black.
Where and when it grows
Pioppino grows in dense clusters and tiers on living, wounded and dead broadleaf wood. Black poplar and other Populus species are its classic hosts, with willow, elder, elm, ash, fig, maple and box elder also frequent. It fruits from bark wounds, pruning scars, stump surfaces and exposed roots, mostly on standing or fallen trunks in riverside woodland, hedgerows, orchards, avenues and parks.
It is a warm-season species, fruiting from spring through autumn and continuing into winter in Mediterranean climates whenever rain follows a mild spell — quite unlike the strictly autumnal fruiting of many temperate wood-rotters. Its range covers southern and central Europe, the Mediterranean basin, North Africa, western Asia and parts of North America, and it is grown commercially on supplemented hardwood sawdust in blocks and bottles.
Ecological role
The species is a white-rot saprotroph and opportunistic weak parasite. It enters through wounds, dead branch stubs and pruning cuts on living poplars and willows, decays the heartwood, and continues as a pure saprotroph once the tree dies, so a single old poplar may fruit for many years before and after its death. The rot it causes is pale, soft and fibrous, with lignin as well as cellulose broken down.
Because it tolerates warmth and relatively dry conditions and fruits repeatedly through the growing season rather than in one autumn flush, it is well suited to riverside and roadside poplars in hot climates. Colonies persist in a trunk for years, and each rain event after a dry spell can trigger a new tier of fruiting bodies from the same wounds.
Similar species
Kuehneromyces mutabilis, the Sheathed Woodtuft, is similar in habit and spore colour but is much smaller and thinner-fleshed, with a strongly hygrophanous two-tone cap that dries in a sharply defined pale disc, and a stipe that is conspicuously covered in dark upturned scales below the ring rather than smooth and white. Galerina marginata is smaller again, with a smooth non-wrinkled cap, a slender brown fibrillose stipe and a rusty-brown rather than tobacco-brown spore print.
Pholiota species such as P. squarrosa and P. aurivella grow in the same clustered way on hardwoods but are covered in coarse, upturned scales on cap and stipe and give rusty-brown prints. Agrocybe praecox and its relatives are close kin but grow from soil, mulch and wood-chip beds rather than from trunks, and lack the tough rooting fused base. The combination of a wrinkled cracked tan cap, a smooth white ringed stipe and clustered growth straight from poplar bark is diagnostic.
