A vivid lemon-yellow little parasol that appears overnight in the compost of houseplants and greenhouse pots. Its powdery cap opens into a deeply pleated disc on a slender yellow stem and collapses within a day.

Overview

Few fungi are met more often indoors than the Plantpot Dapperling. It belongs to Leucocoprinus, a genus in the family Agaricaceae related to the parasols and dapperlings, distinguished by very thin flesh, deeply grooved caps, white spores and fruiting bodies so fragile that they wilt within hours of opening. The genus name means white dung-beetle fungus, referring to the white spore print combined with a superficially inkcap-like habit.

The species is genuinely tropical in origin, growing in rich forest soil and leaf litter across the tropics of both hemispheres. Its worldwide indoor distribution is entirely a product of horticulture: spores and mycelium travel in bagged potting compost, and once inside a heated house or glasshouse the fungus finds the warm, moist, organic-rich conditions it needs all year round. As a result it fruits in January in northern cities as readily as it does in a rainforest.

Its distinctiveness rests on colour and fragility. Nothing else that regularly appears in a flowerpot is that particular chrome to lemon yellow, and few gilled fungi are so ephemeral, with a fruiting body that can rise, open, pale and collapse between one morning and the next.

How to identify it

Cap

2-6 cm across, starting as a small yellow egg or bullet, then expanding through conical and bell-shaped to nearly flat, usually retaining a low central umbo. The colour is bright chrome to lemon yellow, deepest at the centre, fading toward pale yellow or almost buff at the rim and paling overall with age and light. The whole surface is coated in fine mealy or powdery granules that rub away at a touch, and the margin is strongly grooved or pleated, the ridges running well in toward the centre.

Gills

Free from the stem and rather crowded, soft, pale yellow to cream, never developing pink or brown tones. They are thin enough to be almost translucent, and the whole gill assembly wilts and folds as the fruiting body collapses.

Stipe

3-10 cm tall and only 2-5 mm thick, pale to bright yellow, smooth or faintly powdery, hollow and very fragile, tapering upward from a slightly swollen or club-shaped base. A thin yellow ring sits in the upper half but is delicate and frequently disintegrates or slides down the stem, leaving only a faint yellow band.

Flesh & spore print

The flesh is extremely thin, soft and pale yellow, unchanging where cut. The spore print is white, which immediately separates the species from the superficially similar brown-spored Conocybe species that also appear in pots. Spores are smooth, thick-walled and have a germ pore.

Where and when it grows

Indoors and under glass the fungus grows in the compost of potted plants, in seed trays, in bags of stored potting mix and in the peat and bark of greenhouse benches. It needs no host plant, only warm moist organic matter, and often fruits in flushes a few days after a pot has been thoroughly watered. In heated buildings it can appear in any month of the year.

Outdoors it is native to tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, fruiting in rich forest soil, leaf litter, garden beds and mulch across the Americas, Africa, southern and southeastern Asia, and Oceania. In temperate regions it survives outdoors only in warm sheltered spots or heavily mulched beds during hot summers, and it does not persist through cold winters in open ground.

Ecological role

The Plantpot Dapperling is a saprotroph of rich organic soil. Its mycelium spreads through compost, peat, bark fines and leaf litter, breaking down cellulose and other plant polymers and releasing nutrients back into the growing medium. It takes nothing from the roots of the plant sharing the pot, and its presence chiefly indicates a compost that is warm, moist and still rich in undecayed organic matter.

Its strategy is one of speed. Fruiting bodies are cheap to build, consisting of very little tissue stretched over a large pleated surface, and they are produced in quick succession whenever moisture allows, rather than as a single durable crop. Each one releases its white spores within a few hours of opening and then collapses. Spores travel readily in dust, in water and above all in the international trade in growing media, which has carried this tropical species into homes and glasshouses on every continent.

Similar species

Leucocoprinus cepistipes is the closest relative likely to share a pot: it is white to greyish with a brownish granular centre and a distinctly bulbous stem base, never yellow throughout. Leucocoprinus fragilissimus is even more delicate, pale greenish-yellow, with a cap so thin the gills show through as radial lines. Conocybe apala also appears in pots and lawns but is pale cream to whitish, with a smooth conical cap, no powdery coating, and above all a rusty-brown spore print.

Small Lepiota species differ in having a white ground colour broken by brown or reddish scales rather than a uniform yellow powdery surface, firmer flesh, and a cap that is smooth rather than deeply pleated at the margin. Any yellow, powdery, deeply grooved little parasol from a flowerpot with a white spore print is almost certainly this species.

Common questions about Plantpot Dapperling

Why does it keep appearing in my houseplant pot?
The mycelium already lives throughout the compost, feeding on organic matter. Warmth and watering trigger repeated flushes of fruiting bodies; removing the visible mushrooms does not remove the fungus.
Is it damaging the plant it grows with?
No. It is a decomposer of compost and litter, not a root associate or parasite, and it draws nothing from living plant tissue.
Why do the mushrooms collapse so quickly?
The flesh is only a fraction of a millimetre thick in places. Once the cap has expanded and shed its spores, usually within a few hours, it wilts, pales and folds inward.
How do I separate it from a brown-spored pot mushroom?
Take a spore print. This species drops white spores; the similarly sized *Conocybe apala*, which also appears in pots, drops rusty brown ones and lacks the yellow colour and powdery cap.
