Overview

Oudemansiella mucida, treated by some authors as Mucidula mucida, is one of the most beautiful and easily named woodland fungi. The caps are pure white to ivory, so thin-fleshed and water-filled that they look translucent, and they are coated in a thick layer of clear slime that makes them slippery and glassy, hence the porcelain comparison. Clusters hang from beech trunks and boughs, sometimes many metres above the ground.

The genus belongs to the Physalacriaceae, alongside the honey fungi and Rhodotus, and shares with several of its relatives a slender stem bearing a distinct ring and a preference for wood rather than soil. Among white-capped agarics it is separated quickly by the combination of extreme sliminess, translucent flesh, broad widely spaced gills and a persistent membranous ring.

It is closely tied to beech throughout its range and is one of the classic autumn fungi of European beech forest. Because it fruits on standing trunks and high branches, it is frequently spotted from a distance as a white gleam against dark bark, and fallen branches after a gale often bring whole colonies down to eye level.

How to identify it

Cap

2-10 cm across, hemispherical then convex and finally almost flat, sometimes with a shallow central depression. The colour is pure white, ivory or with a faint grey, olive or brownish flush over the centre. The surface is covered in a thick, colourless, slippery gluten that persists even in dry weather, and beneath it the flesh is thin enough to appear translucent, so the gills show faintly through the cap. The margin is often finely grooved or radially wrinkled in age.

Gills

White, sometimes with a faint cream or greyish tint, broad, thick, notably widely spaced, and attached to the stem, usually adnate with a short decurrent tooth. The gill faces are soft and waxy in texture, and the edges are even.

Stipe

2-8 cm long, 0.3-1 cm thick, white above and often brownish and finely scaly toward the base, which is frequently curved where the mushroom has turned out from a vertical trunk. A distinct, thin, membranous ring sits in the upper half; it is striate or grooved on its upper surface and usually persists.

Flesh and spore print

The flesh is white, thin, soft and watery, unchanging when cut. The spore print is white; spores are exceptionally large, smooth and broadly ellipsoid to almost round, which distinguishes the genus microscopically from other white-spored wood agarics.

Where and when it grows

Oudemansiella mucida is strongly associated with beech, Fagus sylvatica in Europe and related beeches elsewhere, and only occasionally appears on other hardwoods such as oak or hornbeam. It fruits on standing dead and dying trunks, on the stubs of broken limbs, on large fallen boughs and on cut logs, characteristically well above ground level, in tufted clusters of a few to dozens of fruit bodies.

The season runs from late summer through autumn, often continuing until the first hard frosts. The species is widespread and common in beech woodland across Europe and extends into temperate Asia. In beech forest it is one of the most conspicuous late-season fungi, and after windy weather its clusters are commonly found on freshly fallen branches lying on the woodland floor.

Ecological role

The fungus is best described as a weak parasite that continues as a saprotroph. It can enter living beech through wounds and broken limbs, causing a white rot in the sapwood and heartwood, and it continues to decay the wood after the branch or tree dies. Colonised beech wood becomes pale, soft and stringy, with bleached zones bounded by dark demarcation lines.

By attacking weakened and damaged beech, Oudemansiella mucida contributes to natural limb shedding and canopy turnover in beech forest, opening gaps and generating the standing deadwood on which many other organisms depend. The thick slime layer on the cap appears to help retain moisture on exposed, wind-swept trunks and may reduce grazing by small invertebrates, allowing spore release to continue in drying conditions.

Similar species

Armillaria species also cluster on trunks and have a ring, but their caps are honey-yellow to tawny-brown with fine erect scales, dry rather than glutinous, and their gills are crowded and pale cream, discolouring rusty. Pleurotus species growing on beech are stemless or have a very short lateral stem, no ring, and dry, smooth caps.

Hygrophorus species share thick, distant, waxy gills but grow from soil in association with trees, not on trunks, and lack a membranous ring. White Hypholoma or Psathyrella clusters on wood may recall the growth habit but have far more crowded gills and dark spore prints, not white. No other common European wood agaric combines a translucent white cap, thick clear slime, widely spaced gills and a grooved ring.

Why does the cap look translucent?
