Powdered Ruffle Lichen Identification Guide

A field routine for Parmotrema hypotropum, the broad grey ruffle lichen of hardwood bark, built around its marginal powder lips and the wide bare pale band on its underside.

What You Are Looking At When You Find It

Most encounters begin the same way: a loose, pale grey rosette flattened against bark on a roadside oak, a hickory limb brought down by a storm, the weathered top rail of an old fence, or a planted maple in a churchyard. Parmotrema hypotropum is a foliose macrolichen, which means the thallus is built from flattened leafy lobes that lie loosely on the substrate and lift freely along their edges rather than fusing into a crust or branching into a shrubby tuft. A well-grown thallus is roughly 5 to 15 cm across, and where the species is abundant several rosettes merge into a continuous grey mantle running the length of a branch.

The genus impression arrives first and is worth trusting: broad, rounded, overlapping lobes 5 to 15 mm wide; a wavy, ruffled outline; no dichotomous strap-like branching; and lobe tips that are conspicuously free of the bark and frequently curled upward. Everything after that is a matter of working the margin and then turning the thallus over.

Step One: Read the Upper Surface

Start in the centre with a hand lens and work outward. The upper cortex is pale mineral grey to grey-green, dulling toward brownish where it has been sun-scorched and taking on a faint greenish cast when wet. Young marginal lobes are smooth and slightly shining; the older central region becomes wrinkled, ridged and irregularly cracked as it ages.

Two negatives matter more here than any positive. First, there are no isidia — the tiny coral-like or peg-shaped outgrowths that stud the lobe faces of several related species. Second, there is no strong network of raised white lines or reticulate cracking across the surface. Faint pale spots (maculae) may show under the lens, but they never resolve into an obvious net. The thallus feels papery and loosely attached, and you can usually slide a fingernail under a lobe tip without tearing anything.

Step Two: The Margins and the Powder

The common name is earned along the lobe edges. On the rims of the lobes, and especially on tips that have rolled or curled upward, the cortex splits open into linear soralia — narrow lips of granular, white to grey-white soredia. Under a lens these read as a fine mealy crust strictly confined to the edge, not scattered across the lobe face. That distinction is the single most useful character across the whole genus: in this species the powder forms continuous marginal lips and stays off the upper surface.

While you are on the margin, look for cilia — short, black, stiff hairs projecting from the very rim. In P. hypotropum they are present but usually sparse and short, often only a few per lobe, and easiest to see on well-lit tips that have not yet rolled.

Step Three: Turn It Over — The Decisive Check

The epithet points at the underside, and this is normally where the identification is settled. Lift a lobe and look at the lower surface. Toward the centre it is black and densely furnished with simple, unbranched black rhizines that anchor the thallus to the bark. Follow it outward and you reach a broad, sharply defined marginal zone that is completely bare — no rhizines at all — and pale: mottled white, buff or pale brown, sometimes with a narrow darker band separating it from the black centre.

That combination — a black rhizinose centre plus a wide, naked, pale to brown marginal band — is the anchor character for the species. The bare zone is commonly 2 to 5 mm deep, wide enough to see without a lens once you know to look for it. Check it on several lobes, because a single shaded or damaged lobe can mislead.

Step Four: Medulla and Spot Tests

Tear a lobe across, or scrape away the lower cortex, and examine the medulla — the loose fibrous layer between the two cortices. In this species it is white throughout, never yellow, orange or pigmented. If you carry the standard reagents, a drop of K (potassium hydroxide) on the exposed medulla gives a yellow reaction, and C on the medulla is negative; the cortex is K yellow. Treat these as confirmatory rather than diagnostic on their own, since the underside and the marginal soredia will already have carried you most of the way.

Apothecia, Spores and Why a Print Rarely Enters Into It

This lichen reproduces overwhelmingly by soredia rather than sexually, and apothecia are rare enough that most recorders never see them. That changes the workflow relative to a gilled fungus. There is nothing to print from a sterile thallus, and the grey powder along the margins is soredia — small bundles of algal cells wrapped in fungal hyphae — not spores, so pressing a lobe onto paper tells you nothing at all.

On the rare fertile thallus you would find brown, cup-shaped apothecia, sessile or shortly stalked, sitting on the lobe surface. The routine then is a razor-thin vertical section mounted in water, examined at around 400x, looking for asci with eight simple, colourless, ellipsoid ascospores. For everyday recording, treat the species as identifiable from the sterile thallus and note it that way.

Substrate, Season and Setting

This is a bark lichen above all: trunks, limbs and twigs of deciduous hardwoods, particularly oak, hickory, maple and elm, plus planted ornamentals in towns and gardens. It also colonises fence rails, weathered posts and, in humid situations, rock. It prefers open to partly shaded settings with good air movement — woodland edges, roadsides, old pastures, cemeteries and yards — rather than the dark interior of closed forest. Its stronghold is the southeastern and eastern United States, thinning northward and westward.

Lichens have no fruiting season in the mushroom sense; you can record this one in any month. The practical season is any damp spell, because a hydrated thallus is greener, more pliable and far easier to lift and examine than a dry, brittle one. Storm-fallen branches are the simplest way to get canopy material into your hand.

Separating It From Its Look-Alikes on Structure Alone

The genus is full of large grey ruffled lichens, so run the margin-and-underside routine every time.

Parmotrema perlatum also makes marginal soredia on upturned lobe tips, but its lower surface has only a narrow brown naked rim rather than a wide, pale, mottled bare band, and rhizines run much closer to the edge. Cilia are typically absent.

Parmotrema reticulatum is grey and marginally sorediate too, but its upper surface is broken by a conspicuous network of white reticulate ridges and cracks; hold a lobe to the light and the net pattern is unmistakable.

Parmotrema crinitum carries long, conspicuous black marginal cilia and, decisively, isidia scattered across the lobe faces. Any isidia rule out P. hypotropum immediately.

Parmotrema stuppeum shares a pale bare lower margin, but its soredia tend to spread onto the lobe surface as laminal or submarginal patches instead of staying in a tidy marginal lip.

Punctelia species have smaller lobes and carry pale pinprick pseudocyphellae as tiny white dots over the upper surface — dots on the face rather than a continuous rim of powder.

Flavoparmelia caperata is the easiest to eliminate: it is yellow-green rather than mineral grey, and its lower surface stays black almost to the lobe edge.

Common questions

What single character most reliably confirms Parmotrema hypotropum?
The underside. A black, densely rhizinate centre paired with a broad, completely bare marginal band that is pale brown to mottled white, combined with powdery soredia in continuous lips along the lobe edges, is the diagnostic package. Neither character alone is enough, but together they separate it from the other large grey ruffle lichens.
Where should I look for it?
On the bark of deciduous hardwoods such as oak, hickory, maple and elm, on twigs and fallen limbs, and on weathered fence rails and posts. Does it damage the tree it grows on?
No. It is an epiphyte that uses bark only as a perch; it has no roots and does not penetrate living tissue. Its distribution tracks bark texture, bark chemistry, light and air quality rather than the vigour of the host, so a heavily lichened trunk simply indicates a stable, well-ventilated surface.
