Powdery Brittlegill Identification Guide
A practical route through Russula parazurea, the blue-grey brittlegill whose matt, bloom-covered cap and pale cream spore print separate it from a crowded field of grey-green relatives.
First Impressions and the Setting
You usually find this one in comfortable, well-trodden places rather than deep forest: a lime avenue, an oak-studded park, a churchyard, a grassy woodland edge, or the mossy verge of a ride. It is late July through October, the ground has had a soaking, and among the litter sit medium-sized mushrooms with dull blue-grey to greenish-grey caps and hard white stalks.
The genus reads instantly once you know the signature. Brittlegills are chunky and brittle, with a stalk that snaps like a stick of chalk rather than shredding into fibres, gills that are rigid and crumble under a thumb, and no ring, no volva and no latex. Get those confirmed before you spend any time on the species, because everything below assumes them.
Step One: The Cap and Its Bloom
The cap is 3 to 8 cm across, occasionally reaching 10, convex when young, then flattening and finally developing a shallow central depression. Colour is variable and needs to be assessed across several fruitbodies: blue-grey, slate grey, grey-green, olive-grey, sometimes with a lilac or bluish wash toward the margin and a paler buff or ochre-tinted centre where sun and rain have worked on it.
The species name in English comes from the surface texture. The cuticle is dry and matt and carries a fine, even pruina — a bloom that looks as though the cap has been lightly dusted with talc. Tilt the cap into raking light and the bloom shows as a soft, non-reflective haze that dulls the underlying colour. Wipe a finger across it and you expose a slightly darker, faintly shining strip. That bloom is fragile: heavy rain and rough handling remove it, so judge it on young, sheltered caps.
Test the cuticle by peeling from the margin inward with a fingernail. In this species it lifts about half to two-thirds of the way to the centre and comes away in a slightly leathery strip. Note that number, because peel extent is one of the standard comparative characters within the genus. The margin is smooth and even, becoming only faintly grooved in old, expanded caps.
Step Two: The Gills
The gills are adnexed to almost free, moderately crowded, and pale cream when young, deepening to a warmer cream as spores mature. Run a thumb sideways across them: they should fracture and crumble rather than bend. This tactile test is worth doing every single time, because the most persistent confusion in the grey-green brittlegills is with a species whose gills are soft and pliable.
Some gills fork near the stipe, and older material picks up scattered rusty spots along the edges. Lamellulae — short gills that stop partway — are few or absent. The gill edge itself is even and concolorous, not serrated when examined under a lens.
Step Three: Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is 3 to 6 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick, cylindrical or very slightly clubbed, white, firm, and chalky in texture with a faintly wrinkled surface. With age and toward the base it dulls to greyish, and the interior becomes spongy and eventually cavernous. There is no ring, no fibrillose zone and no bulb.
Slice the fruitbody vertically. The flesh is white and firm, unchanging or at most slowly dingy grey in the stipe base of old specimens. There is no latex, no reddening and no blueing. The odour is faint and unremarkable.
If you carry reagents, iron salts (FeSO4) rubbed on the stipe surface produce the usual salmon-pink reaction of the genus within a minute, and guaiac gives a fairly rapid blue-green. These are comparative aids rather than species-level proof.
Step Four: Taking and Reading the Spore Print
In this group the print colour is not optional — it is a primary character, and it needs to be read properly. Choose a mature, fully expanded cap, cut the stipe off flush so the gills sit flat, and place the cap gill-side down on white paper or, better, on a glass slide or microscope coverslip. Cover it with an upturned cup to keep the humidity up and leave it four to eight hours, or overnight.
A thin deposit always reads paler than the truth, so scrape the print together into a compact ridge with a razor blade before judging it. Assess it in daylight against a plain white background, and if possible print a known white-spored species alongside for comparison; the eye is far better at ranking two samples than at scoring one in isolation.
Russula parazurea gives a pale cream print — clearly not pure white, but well short of ochre. On the Romagnesi scale it sits around IIa to IIb. Under the microscope the spores are broadly ellipsoid with low warts partly joined by fine connecting lines into an incomplete network, and the ornamentation blackens in Melzer's reagent, as it does throughout the genus.
Substrate, Season and Associates
This is an ectomycorrhizal species of broadleaved trees. Its commonest partners are oak and lime, with birch, beech and hornbeam also recorded. It shows a marked preference for neutral to calcareous soils and does particularly well in parkland, avenues, hedgerow banks, cemeteries and grassy woodland margins where mature trees stand in short turf rather than deep litter.
Fruiting runs from midsummer to late autumn, peaking in September in temperate regions, and it is one of the more frequent grey brittlegills across Europe. Fruitbodies appear singly or in scattered groups, often within a few metres of the trunk of the partner tree, which is a useful clue when several tree species are mixed.
Separating It From Its Closest Look-Alikes
Russula cyanoxantha is the one that catches people most often. Its cap carries similar lilac, grey and green tones, but its gills are soft, greasy and flexible — you can bend them flat with a thumb and they spring back instead of crumbling — and its spore print is white. Gill flexibility plus a white print rules it out on the spot.
Russula grisea and Russula ionochlora both sit in the grey-lilac range with cream prints. Neither shows the strong, even bloom of parazurea; their caps are smoother and shinier, ionochlora runs more violet with a paler yellowish flush at the disc, and grisea is stouter with a longer cuticle peel.
Russula aeruginea is a clean grass-green rather than blue-grey, is tied to birch, and its gills spot rust-brown readily; its print is cream but its cap lacks pruina.
Russula heterophylla is green with a finely cracked, mosaic-patterned cap, drops a white print, and has gills that fork repeatedly near the stipe.
Russula vesca is pinkish-buff rather than grey and betrays itself by a cuticle that retracts from the margin, leaving a narrow white rim of exposed flesh around the cap edge.
Russula atroglauca is a birch associate with a darker, more blue-black cap and a longer cuticle peel.
Work the sequence in this order and the species holds up well: matt bloomed blue-grey cap, half-to-two-thirds peel, brittle cream gills, hard white stalk, unchanging white flesh, pale cream print, broadleaves on lime-rich ground.
