Primrose Brittlegill Identification Guide
A step-by-step read of Russula sardonia, the dark purple pine-wood brittlegill with primrose-yellow gills, a violet-flushed stalk and a distinctive rose reaction to ammonia.
The Setting and the First Impression
This is a mushroom of pine. You will be standing in a plantation ride, on a sandy heath with scattered Scots pine, in a coastal dune slack, or on the needle-carpeted edge of a conifer block on thin acid ground. The season is long — August through November — and this is often one of the last brittlegills still standing after the first frosts have flattened everything else.
The first impression is of a dark, solid mushroom: a deep wine-purple to nearly blackish cap, sometimes with muddy olive or green blotches, sitting on a firm stalk that is washed with violet. Turn it over and the impression sharpens immediately, because the gills are a clear pale yellow rather than the white or cream you expect. That contrast — very dark cap over primrose gills — is the whole search image.
Confirm the genus before anything else. The stalk should snap cleanly like chalk rather than tearing into fibres, the gills should crumble under a sideways thumb rather than bending, and there must be no ring, no volva and no latex.
Step One: The Cap
The cap runs 4 to 10 cm across, occasionally to 12, convex when young, then flattening and finally shallowly depressed at the centre. Colour is dark and variable: purple, wine-violet, purplish-black over the disc, often with an olive or dull green flush, and occasionally with washed-out ochre patches on old, weather-beaten caps. Pale forms exist and can be almost lilac-grey, so judge a group rather than one fruitbody.
The surface is slightly viscid in wet weather and dull to faintly shining when dry. Try the cuticle peel from the margin with a fingernail: in this species it lifts only a few millimetres before tearing, which is notably less than in most of the purple brittlegills and a genuinely useful field character. The margin is blunt and even, remaining smooth until the cap is very old, when faint grooves may appear.
Step Two: The Gills — The Name-Bearing Character
The gills are the reason for the English name. In mature specimens they are pale primrose to lemon-yellow, fairly crowded, adnate to slightly decurrent, and often forked near the stipe. They are rigid and brittle and shatter when rubbed.
Age is critical. In very young buttons the gills are whitish to cream and the yellow has not developed, so a button on its own is not diagnostic. Always open two or three fruitbodies of different ages from the same troop.
One further behaviour is worth watching for: in damp weather, young specimens frequently exude small clear watery droplets along the gill edges, which dry to leave faint brownish spots. It is not present on every collection, but when you see it under pines on a purple-capped brittlegill it is a strong pointer.
Step Three: Stipe, Base and Flesh
The stipe is 4 to 9 cm long and 1 to 2.5 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly clubbed, firm and chalky in texture. Over a white ground it is flushed violet, lilac or wine-purple, sometimes over most of its length and sometimes only in the lower half; occasional pale forms have almost white stalks, so weight this character alongside the gills rather than alone. With age the interior becomes spongy and then hollow, and the surface dulls to greyish.
Slice the fruitbody in half from cap to base. The flesh is white and firm, and in the stipe cortex it slowly yellows, particularly in older material. There is no latex, no reddening and no blueing.
Step Four: The Chemical Check That Settles It
This species has one of the most useful reagent reactions in the genus. Place a drop of ammonia solution on the gills or on freshly cut flesh and watch for a minute. In Russula sardonia the tissue flushes rose-pink to magenta. The reaction is quick, obvious and repeatable, and it is the classic separator from the other purple conifer brittlegills, in which the same drop produces no colour or only a dull yellowing.
Iron salts (FeSO4) rubbed on the stipe surface give a weak, pale pinkish response here rather than the strong salmon of many relatives — again a comparative rather than absolute character, but worth recording.
Step Five: Taking and Reading a Spore Print
Print colour is a primary character in this genus and needs care. Select a fully expanded, mature cap, cut the stipe flush so the gills sit flat, and set the cap gill-side down on white paper or, better, on a glass slide. Cover it with a cup to keep humidity up and leave it six to twelve hours or overnight; cool autumn material can be slow.
A thin deposit always reads paler than the truth, so scrape the print into a compact ridge with a razor blade before judging it, and assess it in daylight against white. Printing a known white-spored species alongside makes the comparison far more reliable than scoring one sample in isolation.
Russula sardonia gives a pale cream to light ochre-cream print, sitting around IIc to IIIa on the Romagnesi scale — clearly warmer than white but well short of deep ochre. Microscopically the spores are broadly ellipsoid with fairly tall warts joined by occasional connecting lines, and the ornamentation blackens in Melzer's reagent.
Substrate, Season and Ecology
Russula sardonia is ectomycorrhizal and, in practice, faithful to pine — Scots pine above all — on sandy, acid, nutrient-poor ground. Look on heathland, in dune systems, along plantation rides, and on the thin soils of pine-covered banks. Fruitbodies appear singly or scattered, often pushing up through needle litter or moss, and they are tough enough to persist for a fortnight in cold weather.
It is widespread and common across Europe wherever suitable pine stands occur, and its late season means that in November a purple brittlegill under pine is a good prompt to check the gill colour.
Separating It From Its Closest Look-Alikes
Russula queletii shares conifers, a dark wine-purple cap and a strongly violet stipe, but its gills stay pale cream and never reach primrose yellow, and ammonia produces no rose flush on them. It also tends to have a more sharply conical young cap and a slightly longer cuticle peel.
Russula torulosa is another purple conifer species but favours calcareous ground under pine, has cream to pale ochre gills, an even firmer flesh, and lacks the strong ammonia reaction.
Russula atropurpurea looks similar from above — dark purple with a blackish disc — but it grows with oak and beech on broadleaf ground, has white to pale cream gills, a plain white stipe that greys with age, and a near-white print.
Russula fragilis is much smaller and more delicate, its cap mixing purple with olive and greenish tones, its gill edges finely serrated when viewed under a lens, and its print white; it also occurs in mixed and broadleaved woodland.
Russula sanguinea is a pine associate with a blood-red rather than violet cap, cream to pale ochre gills, and a stipe flushed pink-red instead of violet, usually on more base-rich soils.
Russula xerampelina and its allies have caps in the dark wine range but betray themselves through stipes that discolour ochre-brown all over and prints that are a deep ochre.
A Working Field Sequence
Pine overhead on sandy acid ground; a dark purple to blackish cap, sometimes olive-flushed; a cuticle that barely peels; primrose-yellow gills in mature specimens, sometimes weeping clear droplets; a violet-flushed chalky stipe; white flesh yellowing slowly in the stipe; a rose flush from ammonia; and a pale cream to light ochre print.
