Pungent Slippery Jack Identification Guide

A working guide to Suillus punctipes, the strongly aromatic ringless bolete of northeastern conifer woods, identified by its tacky tan cap and densely glandular-dotted stalk.

The First Impression and the Setting

Late summer into autumn, a few days after a soaking rain, in the mossy edge of a spruce plantation or a mixed hemlock and white pine stand in the northeastern United States or eastern Canada. The needle duff is thick, the moss is deep, and pushing up through it are mid-sized boletes with dull ochre-tan caps that glisten faintly and pick up needles and leaf fragments as they expand.

Often the odour arrives before the identification does. This species is strongly and distinctively aromatic — a penetrating, spicy-fragrant scent, frequently described as benzaldehyde-like, which is detectable from a pace away when several fruitbodies are open and which intensifies as material dries in a basket or on a drying rack. Boletes with that much smell are few, and in this habitat it is an immediate prompt to look closer.

Establish the genus first. A bolete has tubes and pores under the cap rather than gills. In Suillus the fruitbodies grow with conifers, the cap is typically viscid or tacky, the tube layer separates cleanly from the cap flesh when you pull at it, and the stipe often carries glandular dots or a ring — one or the other, sometimes both.

Step One: The Cap

The cap is 4 to 12 cm across, convex at first, broadening to nearly flat with age, and often slightly irregular where it has pushed through moss. In wet weather the surface is distinctly viscid to glutinous; in dry weather it becomes merely tacky and slightly shining, and dust and needles stick to it.

Colour is dull rather than bright: ochre-buff, cinnamon-tan, dull yellow-brown, sometimes with a faintly darker centre, and frequently streaked with fine appressed innate fibrils or mottled in irregular patches. The margin is inrolled when young, sometimes with a narrow sterile band overhanging the pores, but there is no roll of veil tissue hanging from it — an important point, because that absence anticipates the ringless stipe.

Strip a piece of the cap cuticle back from the margin with a thumbnail; it lifts easily as a gelatinous skin, which is normal for this group.

Step Two: The Pore Surface and Tubes

Turn the cap over. The pore surface is pale yellow when young, dulling to olive-yellow and finally to a dingy ochre-brown as the fruitbody matures. Pores are small and roundish to slightly angular, around two to three per millimetre, so the surface reads as fine and even rather than coarsely honeycombed.

Press a fingertip into the pores and wait a minute or two. Bruising is slight — usually a dull brownish discolouration, sometimes nothing at all — and there is no blue. In very fresh, wet young specimens the pore mouths may bead with clear to whitish droplets, which dry into small brown dots.

The tube layer is short, seldom more than about 8 mm deep, adnate to slightly decurrent, and it peels away from the cap flesh in a sheet when you push a thumb between the two, which is the standard genus check.

Step Three: The Stipe — Where the Species Is Settled

The stipe is 3 to 8 cm long and 1 to 2 cm thick, cylindrical or slightly tapering downward, pale yellow to whitish-buff and often yellower at the apex.

Examine the surface with a hand lens in good light. It is covered, over most of its length, with fine glandular dots: minute clusters of pigmented cells that begin pale and darken with age and handling to reddish-brown, purple-brown or vinaceous-brown, often running together into smudges and streaks on older stalks. Dense, dark dotting over most of the stipe is the key feature and the source of the scientific epithet, which refers to the dotted stalk.

Equally important is what is absent: there is no ring, no membranous skirt, and no persistent fibrillose annular zone. Any bolete in this group with a real ring belongs elsewhere. The base is sometimes clothed in white mycelial threads binding needles and moss.

Step Four: Flesh and Colour Change

Slice a fruitbody lengthwise from cap centre to stipe base. The flesh is pale yellow to whitish, soft in the cap and firmer in the stipe. In some collections the stipe base flushes slowly pinkish-brown or vinaceous where cut, but there is never any blue or green reaction, and any change is gradual and localised rather than sweeping across the cut face. Re-check the odour on the cut surface, where it is usually strongest.

Step Five: Taking and Reading a Spore Print

The viscid cap complicates print-taking, so blot the surface with paper first and let it dry for a few minutes; otherwise the cap will slide and smear the deposit. Cut the stipe off flush with the tubes so the cap sits level, place it pore-side down on white paper, cover it with a bowl to keep humidity up, and leave it three to six hours. Mature caps drop heavily.

The print is cinnamon-brown to dull olive-brown. Judging the olive component requires a thick deposit, so let it build and then smear a portion thin with a fingertip; a heavy pile reads almost chocolate, while a thin smear reveals the olive cast. Under the microscope the spores are smooth, subfusiform to narrowly ellipsoid, and pale yellow-brown in water — an unremarkable shape that confirms the genus rather than the species, which is why the stipe dotting, the ringless build, the odour and the host tree carry the weight.

Substrate, Season and Range

Suillus punctipes is ectomycorrhizal, forming its partnership chiefly with spruce and hemlock, and also occurring in mixed stands that include white pine. Look for it on moss and needle duff rather than on wood or bare mineral soil, growing scattered to gregarious and sometimes in loose arcs where a mycelium has spread through the duff.

Its range is the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, extending west toward the Great Lakes. Fruiting runs from late summer through autumn, following sustained rain, and continues until hard frosts end the season.

Separating It From Its Look-Alikes

Suillus granulatus and the closely related North American S. weaverae share the ringless stipe with glandular dots, but their caps are pinkish-cinnamon to pale buff, their young pore surfaces are whitish before yellowing and typically bead with conspicuous pale droplets, and they lack any strong odour. Smell and cap tone separate them.

Suillus brevipes has a dark chestnut-brown, strongly viscid cap on a notably short, stout, white to pale yellow stipe that is essentially free of glandular dots and shows no ring. It partners with pines and has no marked odour.

Suillus luteus and S. cothurnatus both carry an obvious membranous ring or a persistent annular zone on the stipe, which rules them out at a glance.

Suillus americanus and S. subaureus are bright yellow in cap and flesh, with more slender or more strongly yellow stalks, and associate with white pine.

Suillus pungens is the closest match on odour, since it too is strongly aromatic, but its cap starts mottled whitish and grey before maturing olive-yellow, and it grows with coastal pines in western North America — a difference in both cap development and geography.

Suillus spraguei is unmistakable in comparison: a dry cap covered in red fibrillose scales, with a partial veil, under white pine.

A Working Field Sequence

Spruce or hemlock overhead; a tacky ochre-tan cap; small pale yellow pores that dull to olive; a short, easily separable tube layer; a stipe densely spotted with darkening glandular dots and carrying no ring at all; pale yellow flesh with no blue reaction; a strong spicy-aromatic odour; and a cinnamon to olive-brown print.
