Purple-spored Puffball Identification Guide

How to recognise Calvatia cyathiformis in short grassland, from the turban-shaped young ball to the weathered purple cup left behind in spring. Includes the all-important vertical cut and separation from other large puffballs.

The setting and the first glance

This is a fungus of open ground rather than woodland. You find it standing in short turf — a pasture, a mown lawn, a cemetery, a playing field, a roadside verge, a prairie remnant — in the warm, humid weeks after summer or early autumn rain. The first impression is a pale ball at ankle height, conspicuously light against clipped green grass, often with several more scattered in a rough arc or ring across the same sward. Sizes vary widely, from 7 cm to 20 cm across, and the shape is not a true sphere: it is broadest above and narrows below into a stout, wrinkled, tapering base, giving a turban or inverted-pear outline. That silhouette, in that habitat, narrows you to a handful of candidates immediately.

Reading the outer skin

Run a thumb over the surface. Young specimens are white to greyish-white, felted, and almost smooth. As the fruitbody expands, the outer layer dries and cracks into a mosaic of small, flat, polygonal patches, and the colour warms through buff and tan to a dull pinkish-brown or greyish-brown. There are no spines, no pyramidal warts, and no fringe of scales. Look particularly for what is absent: there is no neat apical pore or mouth at the top, the feature that defines the smaller puffballs, and there is no volva, no ring, and nothing resembling a cap or stem.

The cut that settles it

The single most informative action is to halve a specimen from top to bottom with a sharp knife. In a young fruitbody the interior is pure white, homogeneous, and evenly textured like dense foam, with no internal structure whatsoever — no outline of a folded cap, no shadow of gills, no central stem line. As the fungus matures the spore mass, the gleba, yellows, passes briefly through olive tints, and then turns a distinctive deep purple-brown to purplish-grey and becomes dry and powdery. That purple tone is the species' signature, and it is the character the common name records.

The cut also reveals the second key feature: a well-developed sterile base. Below the spore mass sits a chambered, spongy, cottony zone, clearly set off from the gleba by a thin partition. This base does not turn to spore dust and does not collapse.

What is left behind

When the fruitbody ripens, the upper wall breaks up into irregular flakes that peel and blow away, releasing the powdery gleba to the wind. What remains, sitting in the grass, is the persistent sterile base as a stout goblet or cup — the feature the epithet cyathiformis, meaning cup-shaped, refers to. These purple-brown cups weather well and can still be found months later, right through winter and into spring. Learning to spot them is a useful second route to the species, because a field of empty cups in March tells you exactly where to search the following summer.

Getting a spore deposit

A classic gilled-mushroom print is not possible here, but the principle carries over. Take a ripe specimen, tap or squeeze a small puff of the gleba onto a sheet of white paper, and let the dust settle. Read the colour in good daylight: a dull purple-brown, sometimes leaning purple-grey, never olive, never yellow-brown, never black. Under the microscope the spores are globose, small at roughly 3.5–7.5 µm, and minutely warted or short-spiny. Mixed among them is the capillitium — long, thick-walled, branched threads with occasional cross-walls and small pits — which helps confirm the genus.

Substrate, season and ecology

Calvatia cyathiformis is a saprotroph of grassland soils, feeding on the thatch of dead roots and stems built up under turf. It fruits in summer and autumn, keyed tightly to warm rain, and often appears in fairy rings as the underground mycelium expands outward year on year. Nitrogen-enriched, regularly grazed or mown ground suits it. It is common through eastern and central North America and turns up widely in warm-temperate regions elsewhere. It is not associated with trees, does not grow on wood, and does not fruit in deep woodland shade — so habitat alone eliminates several confusables before you even kneel down.

Separating the close relatives

Calvatia gigantea, the giant puffball, is the biggest confusion for beginners, but the differences are stark once compared. It is far larger — routinely 30 cm and often much more — near-spherical rather than turban-shaped, and attached by a narrow cord with little or no persistent sterile base. Its mature gleba is olive-brown to yellow-brown, never purple.

Calvatia craniiformis shares the pear or turban outline and a large sterile base, but its top is smooth and wrinkled like a skull, its outer skin sloughs in thin sheets, and the ripe spore mass is yellow-brown ageing to olive-brown or greenish-brown. It also tends to grow in woods, at woodland edges and in shaded lawns rather than in open pasture.

Calvatia fragilis does produce a purple spore mass, so colour alone will not separate it. Go by size and structure: it is much smaller, generally 3–6 cm, more rounded, and has a comparatively small, poorly developed sterile base that leaves only a shallow remnant rather than a deep cup.

Lycoperdon species such as L. perlatum are smaller, decorated with spines or granular warts, and open by a single neat pore at the apex; the gleba matures olive-brown.

Bovista species are small and round, sit loosely on the surface, break free to roll with the wind, and lack a sterile base entirely.

Scleroderma species have a thick, tough, often warty rind that feels like leather, and even quite young specimens show a firm, dark purplish-black interior marbled with pale veins rather than a soft white one. They grow in woods and on sandy ground with trees.

Button-stage gilled fungi — Agaricus and Amanita in particular — can pass as small white balls above ground. The vertical cut ends the question at once: those show the silhouette of a developing cap, gills and stem inside, while a puffball shows uniform white foam.
