A small, thin, greyish bracket that covers conifer deadwood in dense rows and shows a lilac to violet pore surface when fresh.

Overview

The Purplepore Bracket is the conifer counterpart of the Violet-toothed Polypore and one of the most abundant fungi of coniferous forest anywhere in the temperate and boreal north. On a fallen spruce or pine trunk it can produce thousands of small overlapping brackets in a continuous band along the exposed wood, each one no bigger than a thumbnail but collectively unmistakable.

Like the rest of Trichaptum, it is defined by the violet pigment of its spore-bearing surface and by the tendency of that surface to break down from neat angular pores into a shallow toothed or fluted texture as the bracket ages. Its overall form is often effused-reflexed: much of the fruit body lies flat against the wood as a crust, with only the outer edge lifting away into a narrow shelf.

It is a member of the Hymenochaetales and is not closely allied to the superficially similar Trametes brackets, despite sharing their shelf-forming habit.

How to identify it

Cap

Brackets are small, typically 0.5-3 cm across and about 1-2 mm thick, semicircular to narrowly shelf-like, and very often only partly raised from the wood so that the fruit body is effused-reflexed. They fuse laterally into long continuous rows and overlapping tiers covering large areas of a log. The upper surface is finely hairy to velvety, whitish to grey or greyish brown, faintly zoned, and usually greened by algae in older material. The margin is thin, often wavy, and frequently retains a violet tinge.

Pores

The pore surface is violet to lilac or purplish when fresh, fading with age and weathering to pinkish buff, tan or pale brown. Pores are angular at roughly 3-5 per millimetre, and with maturity the walls split so the surface becomes shallowly toothed, fluted or irregular rather than cleanly poroid. The tube layer is very shallow, generally under 2 mm.

Flesh & spore print

The context is very thin, whitish to pale buff, tough and pliable when moist, stiffening when dry and rehydrating readily. There is no stipe. The spore print is white, from smooth cylindrical spores.

Where and when it grows

This species is essentially restricted to conifer wood. Spruce is the classic host, with pine, fir, larch and Douglas fir also heavily used, and it colonises fallen trunks, stumps, standing dead stems, cut log ends and worked softwood timber left outdoors. It appears most abundantly on wood that has shed its bark, and it is often the first fungus to sheet over a newly exposed trunk surface.

It occurs throughout the boreal and temperate coniferous forests of Europe, Asia and North America and is one of the most frequently recorded polypores in those regions. Fresh growth peaks from summer into autumn, but the tough thin brackets persist year-round and rehydrate to full colour after rain.

Ecological role

The Purplepore Bracket is a saprotrophic white-rot fungus, degrading lignin along with cellulose and leaving conifer wood pale, soft and stringy. It is a pioneer, colonising trunks and stumps within a season of death and often establishing from spores that reach exposed sapwood immediately after felling or windthrow.

Given its extraordinary abundance, it is one of the principal agents initiating the breakdown of conifer deadwood across northern forests, softening the outer wood and opening it to later-arriving fungi and to invertebrates. Its dense bracket ranks form a humid micro-habitat, and the fruit bodies host a range of specialised fungicolous fungi and small arthropods through the winter.

Similar species

Trichaptum biforme is the hardwood equivalent — larger, more fully bracket-shaped, and with a coarser, more strongly toothed mature surface. Substrate separates them cleanly in most cases. Trichaptum fuscoviolaceum shares the conifer habitat but develops its hymenophore into distinct radial spines, plates and irregular ridges rather than shallow pores, and tends to be a duller violet-brown.

Trametes species on conifer wood have persistent white round pores that never carry violet pigment. Resupinate Hyphodontia and Schizopora crusts can show toothed surfaces but form no reflexed bracket and are pale, without violet tones. Stereum sanguinolentum shares the conifer habitat but has a smooth, poreless, buff-grey underside.

How small are the brackets?
Usually under three centimetres wide and only a millimetre or two thick. Much of the fruit body may lie flat on the wood with only a narrow shelf lifting free.
The pores look brown, not violet. Is it still this species?
Likely yes. The violet pigment fades with weathering. Check the outer margin, which usually holds the colour longest, or look for younger brackets on a shaded part of the log.
Which trees does it grow on?
Conifers almost exclusively — spruce above all, plus pine, fir, larch and Douglas fir, on fallen trunks, stumps, cut log ends and outdoor softwood timber.
Why does the pore surface become toothed?
