A small, neat earthstar that stands on exactly four arched rays rising from a pale mycelial cup, with a stalked grey sac whose mouth sits in a clearly outlined pale court.

Overview

The Rayed Earthstar is the miniature of the arched, or fornicate, earthstars. Like Geastrum fornicatum it separates its outer wall into two layers, leaving a cup behind in the litter while the inner layer splits into rays that stay hooked to the cup at their tips and bow downward to raise the spore sac. The difference is scale and finish: this species rarely exceeds 4 cm in height and is a tidy, pale, almost architectural little fungus.

The ray count is unusually consistent — normally exactly four, giving the fungus its epithet quadrifidum — and the basal cup is typically whitish with encrusted needles and soil rather than dark and ragged. The stalked grey sac has a small white collar beneath it and a conical mouth ringed by a distinct pale zone.

It is a species of coniferous woodland floors, often growing among moss and needle duff where few other fungi are visible, and its stiff structure means fruit bodies remain recognisable long after they have shed their spores.

How to identify it

Star and legs

Whole fruit bodies stand 2–4 cm tall and span 1.5–4 cm. The inner fibrous layer splits into typically four (occasionally five) narrow rays whose sharp tips remain attached to the outer mycelial layer, which stays in the litter as a shallow, pale, cup-shaped mat encrusted with needles and soil. The rays arch downward like legs, lifting the sac clear of the ground.

Spore sac and stalk

The sac is 0.6–1.5 cm across, globose, pale grey to grey-brown, smooth or very finely mealy. It is raised on a short slender stalk 1–3 mm long, above which sits a conspicuous whitish collar or apophysis at the sac base — a good confirming detail.

Peristome

The apical mouth is conical, fibrillose and silky, and is set within a clearly delimited paler zone or court whose outline is sharply visible against the grey sac. The mouth is not grooved.

Interior

The gleba matures from white and firm to dark brown powder around a slender columella. The papery sac wall is thin enough that light rain produces visible puffs of spores from the mouth.

Where and when it grows

The Rayed Earthstar is most typical of coniferous woodland, growing among needle litter, mosses and humus under spruce, pine and fir, and sometimes in mixed woods with beech or hazel. It also occurs on mossy banks, in old plantations and occasionally on calcareous woodland soils under broadleaves.

Fruiting runs from late summer into autumn, with dry, weathered specimens persisting through winter. It is widespread across northern and central Europe, North America and temperate Asia, and reaches well into montane and boreal forest where it may fruit in deep moss carpets.

Ecological role

Geastrum quadrifidum is a saprotroph of conifer needle litter, moss and humus, its mycelium permeating the fermenting layer beneath the surface. Fruit bodies form below the litter as small felted balls before the outer layer splits and the arching rays hoist them into view.

Raising the sac 2–3 cm above a dense moss or needle carpet solves a real problem for a small fungus: puffed spores that would otherwise be trapped in the litter are instead released into moving air. The rigid, long-lasting legs and cup keep the sac elevated across many weeks of intermittent rain.

Similar species

The Arched Earthstar (Geastrum fornicatum) is the main confusion, sharing the arched habit, but it is roughly twice the size, distinctly darker brown to blackish, with a coarser soil-encrusted cup, and its mouth is not enclosed in a sharply delimited court.

Non-arched earthstars are separated by having a single continuous base with no separate cup: the Fringed Earthstar (Geastrum fimbriatum) and Rounded Earthstar (Geastrum saccatum) both sit flat with sessile sacs, while the Crowned Earthstar (Geastrum coronatum) is larger, flat-sitting and has a darker, bloomed sac. The Beaked Earthstar (Geastrum pectinatum) has a grooved, long-beaked mouth quite unlike the silky peristome here.
